Today’s two ends of the country

Across the 433 cities tracked today, the warmest high is in Ledong, Hainan (32.8°) and the coolest in Hulunbeier, Inner Mongolia (-10.2°), a spread of 43.0°C. 30 cities are at or above 30°C by day and 122 are below 10°C. Put those two side by side for today’s two ends of the country.

Pairings worth a look

  • Harbin · Sanya North to south: Harbin and Sanya sit thirty degrees of latitude apart, the most-quoted pairing in China, with winter gaps often beyond 40°C. Today Harbin -3.2°, Sanya 31.8°, a gap of 35.0°C.
  • Urumqi · Guangzhou Inland against coast: Urumqi swings hard between day and night in dry air while Guangzhou stays humid all year; the same 30°C feels nothing alike. Today Urumqi 11.8°, Guangzhou 30.1°, a gap of 18.3°C.
  • Lhasa · Chengdu What altitude does: Lhasa sits more than 3,000 m above Chengdu; summer days are similar, nights can differ by over ten degrees, and UV is in a different league. Today Lhasa 10.7°, Chengdu 17.7°, a gap of 7.0°C.
  • Kunming · Xiamen Two kinds of mild: Kunming owes its spring-like year to the plateau, Xiamen to the sea; the seven-day lines show one flat and one moving with the weather. Today Kunming 19.3°, Xiamen 28.8°, a gap of 9.5°C.

How to use this page

Type a city into either box, in Chinese or pinyin, and pick from the list; “Near me” drops the closest city into A once you allow location access. The cards show today’s high, low and conditions, the chart plots both cities’ daily highs for the week ahead, and the table lists each day’s high/low with the difference, positive when A is warmer. “Copy link” gives you a URL that opens on the same two cities.

The comparison uses forecast highs, not how it feels. Humidity, wind and altitude make the same number feel very different, so open a city page for its clothing, cold-risk and UV indices when in doubt; numbers beyond a few days carry noticeably more error, as explained in our note on seven-day forecast reliability.

The data is the same as the rest of the site: public China Meteorological Administration forecasts refreshed three times a day, with each city page keeping this year’s records. This is not an official warning; follow the meteorological service for alerts.

Common questions

Why do two cities with the same temperature feel so different?

Humidity and wind do most of it. 30°C with 80% humidity in the south stops sweat evaporating and can feel like 35°C or more; 30°C with 20% humidity and a breeze in the northwest is comfortable in the shade. High-altitude cities add a strong day–night swing on top.

Which day’s data does the comparison use?

The cards and the first row are today; the next six rows are the forecast for the coming six days, all from the latest refresh of the day. Open it tomorrow and the numbers move with it.

Can I compare Japanese cities?

This page covers the 433 Chinese cities only. The 48 Japanese locations each carry a seven-day forecast on the Japan pages, which you can set side by side by hand.
