China stays warm on 2026-09-23 as north cools sharply
China’s provincial regions remain broadly warm on 2026-09-23, with an average high of 29.7°C across 34 provincial regions. Guangdong is the hottest at 35.5°C, followed by Guangxi at 34.8°C and Yunnan at 34°C. Qinghai is the coolest at 15.7°C, with Tibet at 21.5°C and Heilongjiang at 24.8°C, leaving a national spread of 19.8°C between the warmest and coolest provincial highs.
Rain is spread across parts of the northeast, centre, east and south, including Heilongjiang, Anhui, Hubei and Guangdong. The seven-day national picture is almost flat, with the mean high easing only from 29.7°C to 29.6°C. Beneath that stable average, Hubei warms by 7.8°C, Chongqing by 6.8°C and Hunan by 5.1°C, while Jilin cools by 8.7°C, and Tianjin and Heilongjiang each cool by 7°C.
At city level, Shaoguan in Guangdong reaches 35.5°C, while Hezhou and Liuzhou in Guangxi both reach 34.8°C, so light clothing remains suitable in the hottest areas, with rain gear useful where thunderstorms or showers are indicated. The coolest city highs are much lower, with Haibei at 9.4°C, and Haidong and Naqu both at 11.5°C, where warmer layers are needed.
Large day–night ranges call for flexible clothing. Datong moves from 5.9°C to 27.5°C, a range of 21.6°C, while Kunyu ranges by 19.3°C and Yanbian by 18.7°C. In such places, a light daytime outfit may need an added layer in the morning and evening.

China in September: autumn north, summer south
In September autumn arrives from the north. The Northeast and Inner Mongolia drop to 18 to 25°C by day with cool mornings, their most comfortable weeks of the year; the North China Plain and Northwest sit at 25 to 30°C as humidity falls and skies clear, and Beijing's crisp autumn usually sets in during the second half of the month.
South of the Yangtze it is still summer. Shanghai, Hangzhou and Wuhan often see late-season heat above 30°C, and the south coast and Hainan stay near 32°C with typhoons still possible. The southwest rainy season winds down and Yunnan and Guizhou turn sunnier. September is when the north-south gap reopens, so pack for two seasons if you cross the country.
