Jiyuan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 26

Jiyuan lies in northern Henan. It is the birthplace of the story of Yugong, the Foolish Old Man Who Moved the Mountains, and a sacred Taoist destination. This small city has no direct high-speed rail service yet, retains a strong sense of everyday local life, and has largely natural mountain and river scenery. Visit on a weekend road trip, or allow 2–3 days to explore at a relaxed pace.

  • Jidu Temple

The only fully preserved temple among the ancient temples of the Four Great Rivers, with historic architecture and stone inscriptions. Taoist ritual tablets used in dragon-offering ceremonies were also discovered here.

  • Longquan Lake

The lakeside scenery evokes the gardens of Jiangnan. See the springs by day and watch a light show after dark.

  • Mount Wangwu

The setting of the Yugong story and a sacred Taoist mountain. Climb for views across the peaks and a sense of the Taoist realm known as the Heaven of Subtle Emptiness and Clarity.

  • Siping Reservoir

Deep in a gorge, emerald pools offer opportunities for hiking, stream trekking and splashing in the water. You may also encounter macaques along the way.

  • Qinlong Gorge

This lake in the Taihang Mountains has emerald-green water. The hiking route passes through tunnels, and you may spot wild macaques along the way.

Local Flavors of Jiyuan

  • Jidan Bufan (No-Flip Egg Pancake)

Rice batter is cooked into a bowl shape, then an egg is steamed inside. The outside is toasted and fragrant, while the inside is soft and chewy. Spicy gluten strips can also be added.

  • Braised Pork Stuffed Flatbread

A crisp baked flatbread holds a generous helping of braised pork, with a mix of lean and fatty meat and a rich braising flavor.

  • Stir-Fried Chicken

Tender, well-seasoned chicken combines savory, spicy, sweet and numbing flavors. The crisp flatbread served alongside is good for dipping into the sauce.

  • Grilled Meat

Charcoal grilling brings out the meat's aroma while keeping it tender and juicy. There is a wide choice of dipping seasonings, and side dishes come with unlimited refills.

  • Yuxiang Shredded Pork

A popular dish to eat with rice, with a mainly sweet-and-sour flavor. Bamboo shoot strips add texture, and the sauce is ideal for mixing into rice.

Main 2–3-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Historic Architecture and Evening Street Markets): Visit Jidu Temple in the morning to see its thousand-year-old buildings. For lunch in the city, try jidan bufan and beef meatball soup. In the afternoon, admire the Jin-dynasty timber architecture at Fengxian Temple. In the evening, stroll along Yujia Street or Wangwu Old Street and sample local snacks.
  • Day 2 (Climbing Mount Wangwu): Set off early for Mount Wangwu, ideally arriving before 7 a.m. Take the sightseeing shuttle and cable car to Tiantan Peak for views of the mountains and sea of clouds. After descending in the afternoon, visit Yangtai Palace to learn about the Taoist sanctuary described by the poet Li Bai. Stay at the foot of Mount Wangwu that night, or return to the city.
  • Day 3 (Taihang Macaques and Yellow River Scenery): Visit Wulongkou Scenic Area in the morning to see Taihang macaques. Follow the scenic area's rules and the precautions below for any feeding activities. In the afternoon, take a sightseeing boat through the Yellow River Three Gorges to enjoy the gorges and calm reservoir waters, then begin your return journey.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Where to Stay: For city sightseeing and late-night food, consider city-center chains such as Ni Hao Hotel or Hanting, or stay near Huaixian Night Market. To be closer to the scenic area and make sunrise viewing easier, choose a guesthouse at the foot of Mount Wangwu, such as Xiaoshifang Hotel or Laobinggong Hotel.
  • Driving Routes: The drive to central Jiyuan takes about 2 hours from Zhengzhou or 1.5 hours from Luoyang, with generally good road conditions. Driving is convenient for traveling between scenic areas. Mount Wangwu is about 50 minutes from the city, mostly along mountain roads, so pay attention to road conditions.
  • Public Transport Connections: Jiyuan does not yet have a high-speed rail station. Take a high-speed train to Luoyang Longmen Station, then transfer to a direct coach to central Jiyuan, a journey of about 1 hour and 12 minutes. Use buses or taxis between city attractions, and dedicated bus services to reach scenic areas.

Travel Tips

  • Macaque Safety: At Wulongkou, avoid carrying transparent plastic bags, do not feed animals in front of the monkeys, and do not approach closely or tease them, to reduce the risk of scratches. Contact staff promptly if a problem occurs.
  • Clothing and Footwear for Hiking: Mount Wangwu is relatively high, with strong winds at the summit and lower temperatures than in the city. Bring a windproof jacket and wear comfortable sports shoes with good grip.
  • Cable Car Hours: The Mount Wangwu cable car generally closes around 4 p.m. Plan your visit and descent accordingly.
  • Water and Sediment Release Season: During Xiaolangdi's water and sediment releases in June and July, you can see the Yellow River surging into spectacular cascades. At other times, the main attraction is the calm reservoir set between steep gorges.
  • Visiting Historic Buildings: Burning incense is generally prohibited inside Jiyuan's historic buildings, including Daming Temple and Fengxian Temple. Follow the rules on site and take care to protect the buildings.
