Sanmenxia travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 27

Sanmenxia sits along the Yellow River. Its broad river views, underground homes, Taoist sites, and remains of the Yangshao culture make it a good choice for a relaxed weekend or short holiday.

  • Shanzhou Underground Courtyard Homes: This group of traditional homes built below ground is known as the “underground courtyard houses.” It shows the history of cave dwelling architecture on the Loess Plateau.
  • Swan Lake National Urban Wetland Park: This urban wetland near the Yellow River is a major birdwatching spot in Sanmenxia. From November to March, tens of thousands of swans from Siberia often spend the winter here.
  • Sanmenxia Dam: The first large dam on the Yellow River and the first major Yellow River water conservancy project built after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. View the river from the lookout and experience “crossing two provinces in one step.”
  • Guo State Museum: Built over a Western Zhou dynasty cemetery of the Guo State, the museum displays chariot and horse burial pits, an iron sword with a jade handle, and bronze and jade objects from the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
  • Hangu Pass Historical and Cultural Scenic Area: Hangu Pass has long been an important strategic gateway. According to legend, Laozi wrote the *Tao Te Ching* here. The site combines military remains with Taoist culture.
  • Yangshao Village National Archaeological Site Park: Built around the Yangshao Village site, this park focuses on Yangshao painted pottery and offers a look at prehistoric farming communities from about 7,000 years ago.

A relaxed 3-day, 2-night itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival and a first look at the Yellow River
    • Morning: After arriving in Sanmenxia, try Yushan hui noodles or Lingbao lamb soup in the city for a taste of local breakfast.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Guo State Museum to learn about Western Zhou rituals and chariot culture. Then walk or cycle to Swan Lake Wetland Park and take in the Yellow River wetlands from the boardwalk.
    • Evening: Take the Swan cruise boat to see the Yellow River bridge and the lakeshore. At dusk, you can photograph silhouettes on the water from the boat.
  • Day 2: Underground homes and a hot spring break
    • Morning: Visit the Shanzhou Underground Courtyard Homes to see how an entire settlement can be hidden below ground, and learn about folk crafts such as paper cutting and hammered grass printing.
    • Afternoon: Have a traditional Shanzhou ten bowl meal at the site. Afterwards, rest at an underground cave guesthouse or visit Gaoyang Mountain Hot Spring Resort for a soak.
  • Day 3: An ancient pass and the journey home
    • Morning: Drive or hire a car to Hangu Pass, climb the gate tower, and visit Taichu Sacred Palace to explore the pass and its Taoist heritage.
    • Afternoon: On the way back to the city, stop at Sanmenxia Dam for a distant view of the Yellow River from the lookout. Before leaving, pick up Daying fried dough twists or Lingbao apples as gifts.

What to eat in Sanmenxia

  • Lingbao lamb soup: This milky white soup has tender, flavorful lamb with little gamey taste. Often served with flatbread or wide knife cut noodles, it is a common local breakfast.
  • Lingbao roujiamo: Slow cooked pork is tucked into a flatbread that is crisp outside and soft inside. It combines the aroma of wheat and pork and tastes different from Xi’an roujiamo.
  • Lamb hubo: Strips of thin flatbread and mung bean sprouts are simmered in lamb broth. Soft and savory, it is a staple dish around Lingbao.
  • Guanyintang beef: A long established local specialty with a glossy red color, a rich savory flavor, and a firm texture. Eat it sliced or tucked into flatbread.
  • Shuihua foshou sweet cakes: These fried cakes develop a pattern like splashing water as they cook. They have a crisp shell and a rose or brown sugar filling.

Where to stay and how to get around

  • Where to stay:
    • City center (Hubin District): Swan Lake International Hotel and Days Hotel by Wyndham, near Swan Lake or the railway station, offer convenient transport and plenty of nearby places to eat.
  • Local stay: For a taste of life in a traditional home, stay at a cave guesthouse within the Shanzhou Underground Courtyard Homes. The nighttime lighting adds to the atmosphere, though the facilities are fairly traditional.
  • Hot spring stay: If you mainly want to rest, stay at Feicui Lichi Hot Spring Center or choose a hot spring guesthouse near Gaoyang Mountain.
  • Getting around:
    • Getting there: High speed trains serve Sanmenxia South Station, taking about 1 hour from Zhengzhou or 50 minutes from Xi’an. Regular trains serve Sanmenxia Station.
    • Local transport: Buses and taxis are convenient in the city, and taxi starting fares are relatively low. For more distant sights such as the underground courtyard homes, Sanmenxia Dam, and Hangu Pass, driving or hiring a car is recommended. Ride hailing cars can be scarce in some areas.

Practical tips

  • When to see the swans: Mid November through March is the main viewing season. The swans gradually leave after the end of March. At other times, Swan Lake is primarily an urban wetland landscape.
  • Temperature and wind: Temperatures can change markedly between morning and evening. The Yellow River shore and the upper deck of a cruise boat can be windy, so bring a windproof jacket even on sunny days.
  • Travel and parking: Roads around Swan Lake Wetland Park can be congested on holidays and at dusk, when taxis can also be hard to find. Consider a shared bicycle or electric scooter for a ride along the Yellow River road. Allow time to arrange your return trip from Sanmenxia Dam and the Shanzhou Underground Courtyard Homes.
  • Ticket discounts: Some attractions, including the Guo State Museum and Sanmenxia Dam, usually offer half price tickets to holders of teacher qualification certificates or student IDs, while visitors aged 60 and over usually enter free. Bring the relevant documents.
  • Weather and photography: Visit the Yellow River and Swan Lake on a sunny day if possible. In sunlight, the water may look emerald green or golden, while backlighting can bring out the layers of the scenery.
