Shangqiu travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 26

Shangqiu is known as the “City of the Fire God and the Cradle of Shang Civilization.” Its ancient city remains and relaxed pace of life shape the travel experience here. This guide brings together sights, food and practical information around a two-day itinerary.

  • Shangqiu Ancient City: This is the only surviving Ming- and Qing-era prefectural city site in the Central Plains. Its layout is circular on the outside and square within, and it is known for three features: its Eight Trigrams layout, its setting within water, and its layers of cities built atop earlier ones. Walk along the flagstone streets to see the traditional character of its lanes.
  • Mangdang Mountain Tourist Area: Shangqiu’s only national 5A-rated attraction focuses on Han-dynasty heritage. The Western Han royal tombs of the Kingdom of Liang are known as the “finest stone-chamber tombs under heaven.” The “Four Spirits amid Clouds” mural is another highlight for understanding local Han history and art.
  • Yingtian Academy: One of China’s four great ancient academies, it was once the leading institution of learning during the Northern Song dynasty. Fan Zhongyan studied, taught and conducted scholarly work here. Its quiet courtyards, shaded by trees, invite a leisurely visit and photography.
  • Fire God Terrace (Ebo Terrace): This astronomical observation platform dates back about 4,000 years and is also a place of worship dedicated to Ebo, an ancestor of the Shang people. Learn about traditions surrounding the ancestor associated with fire, then climb the terrace for views over the city.
  • Han-Liang Cultural Park: The park features architecture inspired by the Han dynasty’s Kingdom of Liang, with pavilions and towers reflected in the surrounding lake. As you explore and take photos, look out for its interpretations of the period’s architectural style.
  • Riyue Lake Scenic Area: The lake, lawns and woodland provide a pleasant setting for everyday recreation, with water and hills complementing each other. Come for a walk or stay into the evening to watch the sunset.

Suggested Two-Day Itinerary

  • Day 1: The Ancient City and Historic Sites
    • Morning: Start at Shangqiu Museum for an introduction to the history of the Shang region. Admission is free; bring your ID. Then walk to Fire God Terrace and climb up for distant views.
  • Lunch: Eat in the city and try a shaobing flatbread filled with local pressed goat meat.
    • Afternoon: Enter Shangqiu Ancient City through the South Gate. Follow the old streets to Zhuanghui Hall and the Confucian Temple, then visit Yingtian Academy beside Nanhu Lake.
    • Early evening: Walk back toward the ancient city along Nanhu Lake, take a break by the water and enjoy the city walls after the lights come on.
    • Evening: Head to Guide Road Night Market or Xiangyang Road Pedestrian Street. Try thin flatbread wrapped around vegetables, fried sweet rice cakes and meat-filled shaobing while exploring the local evening food and street scene.
  • Day 2: Han Heritage and Lakeside Leisure
    • Morning: Drive or hire a car to Mangdang Mountain Tourist Area, about 1.5 hours from the city center. Visit the tomb of King Xiao of Liang’s queen and enter the cliff tomb carved into the mountain to learn about tomb construction two thousand years ago.
    • Afternoon: Continue to the Dahan Xiongfeng Scenic Area or Mangdang Mountain Geopark for views across the eastern Henan plains. If time allows, return to the city for photos at Han-Liang Cultural Park.
    • Early evening: Finish your trip with a lakeside walk at Riyue Lake Scenic Area, taking in the sunset and nighttime views.

Local Food in Shangqiu

Shangqiu offers both dishes for a full meal and snacks to try on the street. Choose according to your schedule and tastes.

  • Duozi Pressed Goat Meat: This food, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, has a history of more than 600 years. Local goat meat is simmered in seasoned stock, chopped and pressed into a firm block. It is often served in a freshly baked, hot shaobing, pairing crisp flatbread with flavorful meat.
  • Guocun Braised Chicken: This representative local dish uses locally raised chickens braised with a century-old master stock and a variety of spices. The meat is tender enough to fall off the bone, with a rich aroma without being greasy.
  • Tall-Oven Shaobing with Duozi Pressed Goat Meat: A common breakfast or quick meal in Shangqiu, this pairs savory pressed goat meat with a crisp shaobing flatbread.
  • Five-Spice Zaoyu Fish: This dish, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, originated at the long-established Chen family shop. Small wild crucian carp are fried, braised in master stock and slowly simmered over low heat. The fish remain whole while their bones soften, and the flavor is savory with a touch of sweetness.
  • Shuiji Mo: Known as the “king of sweets,” this dessert is linked to a story about a Ming-dynasty grand secretary hosting an emperor at a banquet. Strips of steamed bread are deep-fried and coated in syrup, leaving them crisp outside and soft and moist within.
  • Suizhou Braised Chicken: This local specialty has a 200-year history and was once presented as tribute to the Kangxi Emperor. It has a golden exterior and tender, juicy meat.
