Pingdingshan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 26

Pingdingshan combines the mountain and lake scenery of China's Central Plains with the world's tallest Buddha statue and cultural sites spanning a thousand years. Everyday costs are fairly affordable, making it a good choice for a 3-day, 2-night trip.

  • Baigui Lake

Feed Siberian gulls by the shore and watch orange sunset colors reflected on the water. Admission is free.

  • Xiangshan Temple

Regarded as the hometown of Guanyin, the temple houses a Thousand-Armed Guanyin statue, with sacred bodily relics beneath its pagoda.

  • Yaoshan

Mist often drifts around the steep peaks, where seas of clouds, unusual rock formations and waterfalls define the mountain scenery.

  • Spring Temple Buddha

The world's tallest bronze Buddha statue has a majestic golden appearance and a solemn atmosphere at its feet.

  • Pingdingshan Museum

A white jade eagle with engraved lines offers clues to the origins of the city's nickname, Eagle City. Visitors can also try an immersive murder mystery role-playing game.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Mountain scenery, prayers and hot springs
    • Morning: After arriving in Lushan County, visit the Yaoshan Scenic Area. Take the cable car up, then walk to Yuhuang Peak and explore the Qinglongbei Cliff Walkway and Jiuqu Waterfall, enjoying the striking peaks and seas of clouds of the Funiu Mountains.
  • Afternoon: Visit the Spring Temple Buddha Scenic Area to see the 208-meter-tall golden Buddha. You can also ring the Century Auspicious Bell and take in the site's solemn atmosphere.
  • Evening: Relax after your hike in one of Lushan's natural hot springs, such as Yaoshan Fuquan. Stay overnight in Lushan County or near the Buddha scenic area.
  • Day 2: Local history and a lakeside stroll
    • Morning: Visit Sansu Garden in Jia County. Walk among ancient cypresses and stone inscriptions, pay tribute to the three Su writers—a father and his two sons—and learn about the outlook and ideals of Song dynasty scholars.
  • Midday: Stay in Jia County for lunch and sample local Henan dishes such as hele noodles and tofu stew.
  • Afternoon: Return to the city and visit Pingdingshan Museum to learn about the history of Eagle City. Then head to Baigui Lake Wetland Park for a lakeside walk and stay to watch the sunset.
  • Day 3: An ancient temple, local snacks and the journey home
    • Morning: Visit Xiangshan Temple in Baofeng to offer prayers and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this thousand-year-old temple.
  • Midday: Head to Heping Pedestrian Street in the city center or a local old street. Browse the shops and sample local snacks such as hulatang spicy soup, stir-fried starch sheets and beef-stuffed flatbreads.
  • Afternoon: Finish your trip and head home. Pick up souvenirs such as Ru porcelain gifts or Maigen roast chicken from Baofeng.

Local Food in Pingdingshan

Noodles and homestyle country dishes are central to Pingdingshan's food scene, with plenty of choice and generally affordable prices.

  • Mala Noodles

Chewy noodles coated in a thick sauce, with bold, numbing heat and a rich overall flavor.

  • Hele Noodles

Recognized as intangible cultural heritage, this dish features chewy noodles in a slow-simmered lamb bone broth, with chili-infused lamb fat adding fragrance and heat.

  • Hot Dry Noodles

These relatively dry noodles become rich and sticky when mixed with a thick sauce. Served with a savory soup, they reflect local Henan tastes.

  • Luosifen

A rich broth with a savory sweetness is paired with freshly stir-fried pickled bamboo shoots, springy rice noodles and generous toppings for varied textures.

  • Lushan Languocai

Similar to a big-pot stew, this dish has generous portions of tender meat and a rich broth that goes well with rice, which is provided free.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Where to stay:
    • Lushan County: If your focus is on hot springs and mountain scenery, consider Fuquan Hot Spring Hotel or a nearby guesthouse for the night of Day 1.
    • Central Pingdingshan: For Day 2, stay in the New District or the Zhongxing Road shopping area. The New District is close to Pingdingshan Museum and Baigui Lake. Both areas offer plenty of hotels and convenient dining and transport.
  • Getting around:
    • Driving: Attractions are spread out, so driving gives you flexibility. It is especially convenient for Yaoshan and the Lushan hot springs and is worth considering first.
    • Public transport: Inexpensive intercity buses connect the city with county towns, including route 905 to Jia County and route 906 to Ye County. For Yaoshan, take a coach from Pingdingshan Central Bus Station or choose a direct day-trip shuttle.

Travel Tips

  • Clothing and footwear: Yaoshan has a high elevation and some steep trails, so wear sports shoes with good grip. Mountain mornings and evenings are cooler; bring a light jacket.
  • Reservations and tickets: Pingdingshan Museum is free, but advance reservations through its official WeChat account are required. It is closed on Mondays. Tickets for Yaoshan and the Spring Temple Buddha can be bought online in advance, usually for less than at the entrance.
  • Dining: Restaurants in scenic areas tend to cost more and offer fairly ordinary food. Consider established restaurants in county towns or small street-side eateries where locals queue. Portions are usually generous and prices affordable.
  • When to visit: April through November is a good time to visit. Spring and summer offer mountain escapes from the heat and rafting, while autumn brings red foliage. In winter, visit Yaoshan for skiing or enjoy the hot springs.
