Japan's Temperatures Ease on 2026-10-31
Japan's national high reaches 27°C in Tokai and Okinawa, while Kyushu follows at 26°C. Hokkaido is the coolest region, with a high of 17°C, leaving a 10°C spread between the national extremes. The mean high is 23.5°C, placing the country's overall daytime temperatures closer to the warmer end of that range than to the coolest conditions.
Sunny conditions are given for Tokai and Okinawa, while Hokkaido and Tohoku are cloudy. The mean high is set to ease to 21.2°C over the coming period, a cooling of about 2.3°C. Tokai is expected to see the sharpest fall, easing by 5°C, followed by Hokkaido at 4°C and Kanto at 3°C. The broad direction is therefore toward cooler conditions rather than warming.
Shizuoka (Tokai) and Naha (Okinawa) reach 27°C, with Miyazaki (Kyushu) at 26°C, so light clothing remains suitable during the day in those cities. Kushiro (Hokkaido) is much cooler at 14°C, while Akita (Tohoku) and Morioka (Tohoku) reach 17°C, calling for warmer layers. The widest day–night range is in Saitama (Kanto), where 24°C falls to 10°C; Mito (Kanto) and Utsunomiya (Kanto) also have a 13°C range, making an extra layer useful from morning to night.

Japan in October: crisp autumn, foliage starts in Hokkaido
October is one of Japan's most pleasant months. The typhoon season is largely over, and Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka enjoy 20 to 24°C with low humidity and plenty of sun, ideal for long days on foot. Hokkaido's foliage peaks in the first half of the month with Sapporo at 13 to 17°C and a first snowfall possible by month's end; Tohoku peaks in the last ten days.
Highland spots in central Honshu such as Nikko and Kamikochi colour in the second half, while Kyoto and Tokyo wait until November. Okinawa is still around 27°C with swimmable seas. Mornings and evenings cool noticeably, so bring a light jacket.
