Why Big Day–Night Temperature Swings Make You Catch Cold
Travellers to China’s northwest, to Yunnan or to the plateaus tend to share one experience: you sweat in a T-shirt at noon, start sneezing the moment the sun drops, and by the third day your throat is scratchy. Locals sum it up as “a padded coat in the morning, silk at noon”, and the cold-risk index on this site’s city pages will read “high” in exactly these places. The temperature swing does not manufacture viruses, but it does weaken the body’s defences through several well-documented routes. 1. Colds are viral; the swing changes who gets infected
The common cold is caused by rhinoviruses, coronaviruses and other upper-respiratory viruses that circulate in the population all year. Getting chilled does not conjure a virus out of nothing, but research has repeatedly shown that when the nose and throat cool down, the local immune response in the mucosa weakens and viral replication gains a foothold more easily. Given the same exposure, the odds of developing symptoms are higher in an environment where the body is chilled again and again. That distinction matters: what you are guarding against is not cold as such, but cold the body has not had time to adapt to.
2. Mechanism one: a cooler nose lowers the first line of defence
The nose and throat are the gateway of the airway and normally sit at 33–35°C. Breathing in 10°C air at dusk cools the nasal cavity noticeably. Experiments show that at lower temperatures the interferon response of nasal cells weakens and cilia beat more slowly, so viruses are cleared less efficiently. Where the day–night range is large, this cooling repeats every evening, and often just when the body is already shedding heat fast after a day of sweating. That is why a plateau evening chills you more readily than a northern winter afternoon: in winter you are dressed for the cold all day and the body is in a steady state; on the plateau, dusk is an abrupt switch from hot to cold.
3. Mechanism two: chilling after sweat disrupts thermoregulation
A 28°C afternoon, a hike, damp clothes; then sunset, 12°C, and the wet fabric against your skin cools it by evaporation. To protect core temperature the body constricts peripheral blood vessels, including those in the nose and throat, reducing local blood flow and slowing the arrival of immune cells. This is the physiology behind the folk wisdom that catching a draught while sweaty is the surest way to a cold. Where the range exceeds 15°C the sequence is nearly unavoidable unless you change out of the damp base layer and add an outer one before the sun goes down.
4. Mechanism three: dry air strips the mucosa of protection
Regions with large day–night swings are usually dry regions: relative humidity in Xinjiang, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia and Yunnan’s dry season often sits below 30%. Dry air thins and thickens the mucus layer on the nasal lining, so the cilia struggle to move trapped viruses and particles outward. Dryness also nudges people into breathing through the mouth, bypassing the nose’s filtering and warming altogether. The cold-risk index scores humidity below 30% separately because, stacked on a large swing, it amplifies the risk markedly.
5. Mechanism four: fatigue and poor sleep turn susceptibility into illness
Travel is itself a stressor: early departures, thin air at altitude, jet lag, packed schedules. Sleep deprivation lowers the activity of immune cells, a finding confirmed repeatedly in controlled studies: people who sleep only five or six hours for several nights fall ill far more often after the same viral dose. Places with big swings tend to have cold nights and under-heated accommodation, so sleep quality drops at precisely the moment the body most needs to recover. That is why the cold usually arrives on day three or four of a trip — the product of several days of accumulation rather than a single chill.
6. Where and when it is most pronounced
The largest day–night ranges in China occur on the Tibetan plateau, in Xinjiang, western Inner Mongolia, Ningxia and Gansu’s Hexi corridor, where spring and autumn regularly pair a 25°C afternoon with a 5°C night. Yunnan and Guizhou in the dry season (November to April) also see swings above 15°C; Kunming’s “eternal spring” describes the daytime, and nights call for a sweater. North China in April and October swings 12–15°C, far more than in summer. By contrast the far south and the coast swing only 5–8°C, but high humidity and cold air-conditioning replace the outdoor swing with an indoor–outdoor one. Every city page here shows the day’s high and low; when the gap exceeds 10°C the clothing index adds “carry an extra layer”, and beyond 12°C the cold-risk index steps up a level.
7. Seven measures you can apply directly
One: dress in three layers — a wicking base, an insulating middle, a windproof shell — stripping to one by day and adding back before sunset rather than after you feel cold. Two: carry a light jacket even on a 30°C day; plateau and northwestern evenings cool at 2–3°C an hour. Three: after sweating on a hike or ride, the first thing to do on arrival is change the damp base layer. Four: protect head and neck; a scarf or thin hat raises the temperature of the air reaching your nose by several degrees at almost no cost. Five: in dry regions use a saline nasal spray or drink warm water often to keep the mucosa moist, and switch on the humidifier if the room has one. Six: protect sleep, and do not schedule early starts for the first two nights at altitude, when low oxygen is already draining recovery. Seven: a week before departure, check the destination’s cold-risk index and the seven-day highs and lows; if the swing exceeds 12°C on several days, loosen the itinerary.
8. If symptoms appear
An itchy throat, a clear runny nose and a mild headache are common when travelling through high-swing regions and are usually a simple cold: rest, keep warm, drink fluids, and it eases in two or three days. Three situations deserve caution. Headache, nausea and exhaustion above 3,000 metres point first to altitude sickness, not a cold, and the two are managed quite differently. A fever above 38.5°C or lasting more than three days. A cough with shortness of breath or chest pain. All three call for prompt medical attention rather than pushing on. Older people, children and anyone with an underlying condition should plan conservatively in these regions.
9. How this site’s cold-risk index is calculated
The index quantifies the factors above: a day–night range above 12°C scores 2 points, 8–12°C scores 1; a change of 6°C or more against tomorrow’s high scores 2; a night low below 5°C scores 1; humidity below 30% or above 85% scores 0.5; precipitation scores 1.
