Zigong is muggy and hot in summer, so spring and autumn are more comfortable times to visit.
Zigong’s identity is closely tied to “salt, dinosaurs, and lanterns.” Its well-salt history, dinosaur remains, and lantern culture form the main themes of a trip here. Local Yanbang cuisine is known for its fresh, spicy flavors, making the city well suited to a short trip focused on history, culture, and local food.
Key Tips and Pre-trip Preparation
- Dinosaur Museum temporarily closed: The Zigong Dinosaur Museum is currently being upgraded and renovated, so it cannot be visited this year. Do not include it in your actual sightseeing plans before you go.
- Lantern show opening hours: China Lantern World usually lights up at 6:30 p.m. and closes at 10:30 p.m. The lantern show is larger during Spring Festival or certain public holidays. Outside peak lantern-show periods, you can also visit the China Lantern Museum during the day.
- Spice warning: Zigong cuisine, also known as Yanbang cuisine, is fresh, spicy, and generally quite hot. If you do not handle spicy food well, clearly ask for “mild spicy” or “very mild spicy” when ordering. You can also prepare yogurt or ice jelly to ease the heat.
Classic 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: After arriving in Zigong in the morning, start with a walking tour along Ziliujing Old Street, where you can see the old salt city’s stone-paved lanes and cultural-creative spaces. For lunch, try dipping-sauce dishes or fresh-pot rabbit. In the afternoon, go to Wangye Temple for gaiwan tea and a riverside breeze. In the evening, head to China Lantern World to see the lantern exhibition, then have a late-night local barbecue supper.
- Day 2: In the morning, visit the Salt Industry History Museum to learn about Zigong’s thousand-year-old well-salt culture, then continue to Huanhou Temple. At noon, go to Aiye Ancient Town for Aiye-style local chicken feet and douhua. In the afternoon, choose between the Rongxian Giant Buddha or Fantawild Dino Kingdom depending on your return schedule. If traveling with children, Fantawild Dino Kingdom is the better first choice. Return in the evening with local souvenirs.
Recommended Key Attractions
Zigong’s attractions are relatively concentrated, but their themes differ clearly. The following destinations are among the most representative:
-
China Lantern World
Known for large lantern installations and fine craftsmanship, this is Zigong’s main place to see lanterns at night.
-
Salt Industry History Museum
Converted from a salt merchants’ guild hall, it presents the history of well salt through both architecture and exhibitions.
-
Xianshi Ancient Town
Once an important salt-transport hub, it still has stone-paved streets and a strong sense of traditional daily life.
-
Shenhai Well
Famous for its thousand-meter-deep well and demonstrations of traditional salt-making, offering a look at the industrial heritage of the Salt Capital.
-
Dinosaur Museum
Built on a fossil excavation site, it features dinosaur skeletons and prehistoric remains.
Must-try Food and Restaurants
Zigong is famous in Sichuan for its strongly spicy flavors. Rabbit and beef often take center stage at the table. The following restaurants and dishes can serve as references:
- Li Sandao Dipping-Sauce Dishes: The sliced pork, rabbit tripe, and diced rabbit are especially popular, with a distinct aroma from the chili oil. Dipping-sauce dishes are a Zigong local specialty, though the restaurant setting is fairly simple.
- Toilet Rabbit: Hidden deep in an alley, this place specializes in dry-pot rabbit, with recognizable portions and flavor. Hygiene is average. The authentic branch is in the alley by First Hospital on Tongxin Road.
- Feihong Fish Restaurant: The signature scarlet whole fish and stir-fried fish maw are worth trying; the fish maw is crisp and tender. There may be queues during peak dining hours, so it is best to go as early as possible.
- Lilin Late-night Snacks: Located near Aiye Ancient Town, dried mushrooms and chicken feet are commonly ordered dishes. The chicken feet are soft, sticky, easy to pull off the bone, and well seasoned with fresh spice.
- Sisters Snacks: The main branch is in Gongjing District, and guokui flatbread with liangfen jelly noodles is the classic pairing. The old-dough guokui is soft and chewy, while the liangfen is springy, smooth, and refreshing.
- Grandma Li’s Traditional Eight-Treasure Porridge: This is Zigong-style eight-treasure porridge. It is made by steaming glutinous rice first, then adding white fungus soup and small toppings. The overall taste is refreshing and not overly sweet or cloying.
Accommodation and Transport Tips
- Where to stay: Zigong’s urban area is not large, so staying anywhere in the city is generally convenient. If you want concentrated dining, shopping, and entertainment nearby, consider the Huashang International City area first. If you care more about being close to major attractions and old streets for easy walking tours, choose around Wuxing Street or Tongxing Road.
- Transport: The fastest high-speed trains from Chengdu to Zigong take about 35–50 minutes, making travel between the two cities convenient. Attractions in the city are relatively close together, and taxis or buses are both easy to use. For nearby ancient towns or Rongxian County, driving yourself or taking a taxi is more suitable.
Practical Reminders
- Choosing ancient towns: Xianshi Ancient Town is currently more like a rural market, with few shops open. A visit usually takes less than half an hour, so it is not very suitable as a special trip. Pingqiao Waterfall has relatively little water and is also not worth arranging a dedicated visit for.
- Buying local specialties: It is not recommended to casually buy cold-eaten rabbit or Huobianzi beef sold at scenic-area entrances, as prices may be high and the products may not be authentic. Buy them at local supermarkets or wet markets instead, where price and taste are usually more reliable.
- Ticket reservations: It is best to buy tickets for China Lantern World online in advance, as tickets may not be available on site. The China Lantern Museum is open during the day, and you can make a reservation after arriving.
- Pacing your trip: Zigong’s attractions are somewhat spread out. Around three destinations per day is a reasonable pace. Leave enough time for meals and walking around so the experience feels more relaxed.
