Guangyuan is more comfortable for travel in spring and autumn, though mornings and evenings in the mountains can be cool.
Guangyuan combines ancient Shu Road heritage with local flavors. It is reachable by high-speed rail, relatively affordable, and well suited to a short weekend or holiday trip focused on culture and food.
Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrival and City Culture
After arriving in Guangyuan in the morning, check in to your hotel. Areas near Totem Square or Wanda are convenient for dining and transport. In the afternoon, first visit Huangze Temple to see the stone carving believed to depict Wu Zetian’s true likeness. Then go to Thousand-Buddha Cliff to view one of Sichuan’s larger grotto complexes up close. In the evening, head to Wuzhao Food Street or Shanghe Street Morning Market for late-night snacks and a taste of local street life.
- Day 2: Experience the Steep Shu Road
Set aside the whole day for Jianmen Pass. A good route is to enter from the north and exit from the south: take Cableway No. 1 up the mountain, then choose the Bird Path or Yuan’nao Path according to your fitness level, and finally pass through the gate tower to understand the terrain behind the saying, “One man guards the pass, ten thousand cannot get through.” In the afternoon, you can return to the city, or continue to Cuiyun Corridor to see ancient cypress trees over a thousand years old. For dinner, Jianmen tofu or hot pot are good choices.
- Day 3: Ancient Town Walk and Departure
In the morning, visit Zhaohua Ancient Town to see the old city walls and Longmen Academy, and learn about the “first county of Bashu” and its Three Kingdoms history. In the afternoon, you can climb Phoenix Tower for a view over the city, or go to South Station Memory Block to take retro-style photos. Then buy some souvenirs and start your return trip.
Main Attractions Overview
Guangyuan’s sights are mostly spread between the urban area and Jiange County. Driving is more flexible, but you can also take the high-speed rail and transfer to buses.
-
Thousand-Buddha Cliff
A thousand-year-old grotto complex carved into the cliff, with dense Buddhist niches and plenty of statue details to appreciate slowly.
-
Jianmen Pass
A representative site of the steep Shu Road, where you can try the Yuan’nao Path and Bird Path amid magnificent mountain scenery.
-
Huangze Temple
Known for the stone carving believed to show Wu Zetian’s true likeness, with a Tang-dynasty Great Buddha Cave reflecting the grandeur of high Tang Buddhist sculpture.
-
Zhaohua Ancient Town
A well-preserved Three Kingdoms-era ancient town, surrounded by water on three sides, with old-world charm in its bluestone streets and lanes.
-
Phoenix Mountain Park
Climb the First Tower of Northern Sichuan for a distant view of the city; the park also has nostalgic amusement facilities.
Must-Try Foods and Restaurants
Guangyuan’s local flavors are known for hearty carbs, spicy dishes, and homestyle eateries. The following shops and snacks can be worked into your itinerary:
- Empress Steamed Cold Noodles: A representative Guangyuan snack, with a chewy texture and an appetizing sour-spicy flavor. Choose a small shop with plenty of local customers. A small portion usually costs 5 yuan and is often enough; it is commonly paired with fish mint and dried tofu.
- Xiaotang Walnut Pastry: Located in Shanghe Street Morning Market, priced at 5 yuan each. The pastries are generous with walnuts, made and sold fresh, and have a crisp outer layer, making them suitable as souvenirs.
- Wu Pangzi Spicy Skewers: A specialty spicy skewer shop in Jiange County, averaging 60+ yuan per person. Beef, eel, and pork kidney are popular choices. The flavor stands out more with dry dipping seasoning, and the original broth is also aromatic.
- Tangge Pork Intestines: A small shop in the morning market, opening at 7:30 a.m. and often selling out around noon. The pork intestines are stir-fried fresh, soft and glutinous yet still chewy, while side ingredients such as potatoes and onions absorb the sauce well.
- Laoma Fresh Chili Fish: A fish restaurant often visited by locals. A meal for two costs around 120 yuan and comes in generous portions; the glutinous rice cakes are 10 yuan for 10 pieces. It gets busy at peak mealtimes, so booking ahead is recommended.
Transport and Tips
- Getting there: If taking the high-speed rail, Guangyuan Station is the best choice, as it is in the core urban area. If flying into Guangyuan Panlong Airport, it takes about 20 minutes by taxi to reach the city.
- Getting to scenic areas: From the city, you can take a tourist shuttle bus to Jianmen Pass for 20 yuan, taking about 1 hour. You can also take the high-speed rail to Jianmen Pass Station, a journey of 18 minutes. Driving is the most convenient option, but there are many bends in the mountain roads, so keep your speed under control.
- Travel reminders: The Jianmen Pass Bird Path has a daily visitor limit and closes at 4 p.m., so arrive as early as possible. Food and drinks inside the scenic area are relatively expensive, so you can bring your own water and snacks. Phoenix Tower stops admitting climbers at 5:30 p.m.; be sure to leave enough time.
