Deyang is humid in all four seasons, and spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit.
Deyang is a city in northern Sichuan that works well for a short stay. You can see the ancient Shu civilization represented by Sanxingdui, as well as everyday local food, lakeside greenways, and old-town streets. By high-speed rail from Chengdu, it takes about half an hour to reach, making it suitable for a weekend trip or a slower 3-day, 2-night visit.
- Sanxingdui Museum: Located in Guanghan, the museum houses important artifacts such as the Bronze Sacred Tree and gold masks. It is a key place to learn about ancient Shu civilization. If you want a deeper visit, consider booking a guided explanation.
- Deyang Stone Carving Park: This park has one of China’s larger groups of modern urban stone-carving sculptures. The kilometer-long relief wall and giant totem pillars are visually striking. It is free to enter and also good for taking cityscape photos.
- Deyang Confucian Temple: First built in the Southern Song dynasty, it is one of the best-preserved and larger Confucian temples in western China. Its red walls and dark-tiled roofs retain a traditional architectural feel, and the nearby snack streets have a lively local atmosphere.
- Xiaoquan Ancient Town: An ancient town with a history of more than a thousand years and a relatively low level of commercialization. You can visit Yanzuo Temple to see Ming-dynasty murals, and also try local halal beef pastries and long-established clear-broth beef restaurants.
- Mianzhu New Year Painting Village: Here you can learn about Mianzhu New Year paintings, a national-level intangible cultural heritage, and try hand-painting New Year pictures. It is a good place to understand local folk customs and traditional crafts.
Suggested Itineraries
- One-day trip (compact highlights): In the morning, go to Guanghan to visit Sanxingdui Museum and focus on learning about ancient Shu civilization; in the afternoon, return to downtown Deyang to visit Stone Carving Park, leaving time for photos and a rest; in the evening, go to Confucian Temple Square to browse the night market and try local dry pot dishes and snacks.
- Two-day trip (slower, more in-depth):
- Day 1: Visit Sanxingdui Museum in the morning, then have tea and take a walk in Stone Carving Park in the afternoon. In the evening, watch the sunset at Xuanzhu Lake, then head to the Confucian Temple area for late-night food.
- Day 2: In the morning, stroll around Xiaoquan Ancient Town, taking in the old streets and temple atmosphere, and try the specialty beef guokui. In the afternoon, you can cycle along the Jinghu Lake Greenway or take a boat ride, then return.
- Three-day trip (nature and culture): Based on the first two days, spend the third day at Mianzhu New Year Painting Village to experience intangible cultural heritage. You can also go to Yinghua Grand Canyon in Shifang for rafting, which is suitable for a summer trip.
Must-Try Foods in Deyang
Deyang cuisine is known mainly for its spicy, numbing, fresh, and savory flavors. Dry pot dishes and street snacks are especially representative.
- Deyang dry pot: One of the local specialties, with a rich taste and pronounced numbing heat. You can choose long-established restaurants such as Yongji Dry Pot or Zhangshang Ganjue. The glutinous duck feet are soft and sticky, and konjac is also a good item to order with them.
- Cold jelly noodles in chili oil: Wang Liangfen is a long-running local shop, and its cold jelly noodles in red chili oil are the signature dish. Guokui stuffed with cold noodles is also a common Deyang way to eat it and is worth trying too.
- Xiaoji sliced jelly noodles: An 87-year-old shop. The sliced jelly noodles are topped with crushed peanuts and chopped scallions, while the key flavor comes from its special chili oil. Prices are affordable.
- Xiaoquan beef pastry: A representative snack of Xiaoquan Ancient Town. Best eaten hot, it has a crisp outer layer and a fragrant, juicy beef filling.
- Grandma Xie’s oil tea: A long-established Mianzhu shop. The rice paste is smooth and fine, paired with crispy sanzi fried dough twists, making it a common traditional local breakfast.
Accommodation and Transport Guide
- Where to stay: It is recommended to stay near Confucian Temple Square or the Bell and Drum Tower. Both are in the core downtown area, with convenient transport and concentrated dining and night-market options. Around 200 yuan per person is enough for a fairly comfortable stay.
- Intercity transport: From Chengdu East Railway Station, take a high-speed train to Deyang Station or Guanghan North Station. The journey takes about 15–30 minutes, with frequent departures.
- Local transport: Buses and taxis in Deyang are both fairly convenient, and ride-hailing cars usually respond quickly. If you are going to farther places such as Xiaoquan Ancient Town or Mianzhu, driving yourself or taking a taxi is more suitable.
Practical Tips
- Sanxingdui reservations: Sanxingdui Museum receives many visitors, so it is recommended to reserve tickets in advance through the official WeChat account and try to avoid holidays and weekend peak times.
- Dry pot spice level: Deyang’s local spiciness can have a strong afterkick. If you cannot eat spicy food, clearly say “mildly spicy” or “no chili” when ordering.
- Sun protection and hydration: When spending time outdoors at places such as Stone Carving Park and Xuanzhu Lake, use sun protection and carry water with you.
- Museum closures: Deyang Confucian Temple and some museums may be closed on Mondays, so check opening hours before setting out.
