Xichang gets plenty of sunshine, and the temperature difference between morning and evening can be quite noticeable.

Liangshan Prefecture is large, with a rich and varied mix of natural scenery and ethnic culture. For a first trip to Liangshan, travelers usually use the prefectural capital, Xichang, as a base before visiting nearby scenic areas. The following is a 3-day, 2-night itinerary in and around Xichang, suitable for first-time visitors.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: After arriving in Xichang, visit Qionghai National Wetland Park and Moonlight Style Town in the afternoon; at dusk, go to Jinlin Beach to watch the sunset; in the evening, stroll around Jianchang Ancient City and try fire-basin barbecue.
  • Day 2: In the morning, go to Dashiban Ancient Village to take Yi-style portrait photos; in the afternoon, visit Lushan Mountain to see the monkeys and look out over Qionghai from above; in the evening, relax with coffee in Tingtao Town; at night, head to Torch Square to enjoy the city night view.
  • Day 3: Drive yourself or hire a car to Luoji Mountain to visit alpine meadows and Pearl Waterfall; in the afternoon, experience the natural waterfall hot springs, then return or continue on to your next stop.

Recommended Main Attractions

Attractions in Liangshan are fairly spread out. The following are some of the most representative core places to visit:

  • Qionghai National Wetland Park: One of China’s larger urban wetland parks, with a broad lake surface. You can cycle around the lake or walk along the west-bank paths to enjoy lake views and watch water birds. Admission is free.
  • Jianchang Ancient City: An ancient city first built in the Ming dynasty, with some areas restored. Its night lighting and lane atmosphere are distinctive, making it suitable for an evening walk and a feel for local daily life. Admission is free.
  • Dashiban Ancient Village: Located by Qionghai, with a 600-year history as an old post-station village. The orange-red walls of Lingying Temple are highly recognizable, and it is a good place to wear Yi clothing for travel photos. Admission is free.
  • Lushan Mountain: The mountain has viewpoints overlooking Qionghai, and wild monkeys can often be seen. You can take a cable car up and a slide down, making the visit relatively easy.
  • Luoji Mountain: At an elevation above 3,500 meters, it is fairly cool in summer. Visitors can see alpine meadows, Pearl Waterfall, and natural hot springs, making it suitable for those who enjoy natural scenery and light hiking.

If you have more time, you can also go to Longtoushan Grand Cliff in Leibo to see the sea of clouds, or visit Cliff Village in Zhaojue for a hiking experience.

Recommended Local Foods

When traveling in Liangshan, focus on Yi-style dishes and local Xichang snacks:

  • Huili Chicken and Ham Rice Cake Strips

Made with free-range chicken soup as the base, served with shredded chicken and ham. The rice cake pieces are soft and chewy, and the soup is rich and savory.

  • Fire-Basin Barbecue

Slow-grilled over charcoal until crisp outside and tender inside, then eaten with chili powder. It has a strong Yi flavor.

  • Fried Potatoes

Crisp and fragrant on the outside and soft inside, often tossed with a spicy sauce. A common street snack.

  • Tuotuo Pork

Made with large chunks of meat and simple seasoning, highlighting the meat’s aroma and soft, glutinous texture.

  • Drunken Shrimp

Made with small Qionghai shrimp marinated in fermented rice wine. It has a distinct wine aroma, with firm, springy shrimp meat.

Travel Tips and Things to Note

  • Sun Protection and Warm Clothing: Xichang has strong ultraviolet rays, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and an umbrella for both sun and rain. The local temperature difference between day and night is large, so even in summer, it is worth packing a long-sleeved top or a windbreaker.
  • Transport: In the city, you can rent an electric scooter to get around, which is flexible and relatively inexpensive. For surrounding attractions, self-driving is more suitable, or you can ask your hotel to help arrange a driver. Ride-hailing may be inconvenient on some road sections.
  • Monkey Precautions: When visiting Lushan Mountain, do not open your bag or eat in front of the monkeys, to avoid having food or belongings snatched.
  • Torch Festival: If you visit around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, usually in August, you can experience the Yi Torch Festival. Before you go, check the specific venues and ticket information, as city squares may only host some activities.
  • Prepare Small Change: Some villages and snack stalls may only accept cash, so it is a good idea to carry around 200 yuan in small notes.
