Guang’an is humid, hot, and rainy in summer, while mountain areas have a noticeable temperature difference between morning and evening.

Guang’an combines red culture sites with the landscapes of eastern Sichuan, making it well suited to a weekend trip or a short, slow-paced getaway. Below is a 3-day, 2-night travel reference organized by attractions, food, and route.

Recommended Key Attractions

Guang’an’s attractions are not especially close to one another, so it is better to group visits by area. The following places can serve as main destinations:

  • Deng Xiaoping’s Former Residence: A 5A-rated scenic area that includes the former residence, exhibition hall, and bronze statue square. You can see the original style of rural homes in eastern Sichuan. A full visit takes about 1.5 hours on foot. It is free to enter, and you are advised to bring and scan your ID card at the entrance.
  • Huaying Mountain: An important natural oxygen bar in northeastern Sichuan, known for its karst stone forest and red culture resources. There is also a giant panda garden inside the scenic area. It is good for escaping the heat in summer and enjoying snow in winter. The temperature difference on the mountain is large, so bringing a jacket is recommended.
  • Tianyi Valley: A 4A-rated scenic area whose main highlights are the “Heavenly River in a Cave” waterfall, caves, and ground fissure landscapes. In summer, you can enjoy the water and cool off, and you can also try canyoning. The main way to visit is by hiking along the river valley.
  • Baozhen Fortress: A Republican-era ancient fortress known as the “No. 1 Military Fortress in Sichuan.” Its defense system is relatively well preserved. You can visit the Duan Family Courtyard and watchtowers to learn about the features of eastern Sichuan residences and military architecture.
  • Shenlong Mountain Baren Stone City: The ruins of an ancient Ba Kingdom fortress, with highly distinctive massive stone walls and watchtowers. The viewing platform at the mountaintop offers wide views over Guang’an and is also suitable for taking photos with an ancient-style theme.
  • Guang’an Sleepless City: A nighttime district themed around Song-dynasty charm, combining light shows, performances, and dining. At night, you can watch the “Long Feng Yin Bin Cheng” art show and sample night-market snacks along the way.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Red Culture and City Night Views
    • Morning: Visit Deng Xiaoping’s Former Residence, including the former home and exhibition hall, to learn about related red culture.
    • Afternoon: Visit Guang’an Museum (closed on Mondays) to learn about the city’s history. Then take a walk at Siyuan Square and see the world’s largest bronze baoding vessel.
    • Evening: Go to Guang’an Sleepless City to enjoy the light show and water performance, and choose night-market snacks to supplement dinner.
  • Day 2: Natural Scenery and Ancient Fortress Style
    • Morning: Visit Huaying Mountain. First see the Giant Panda Garden, then hike into the stone forest area.
    • Afternoon: Head to Baozhen Fortress or Shenlong Mountain Baren Stone City to experience the defensive layout of an ancient fortress, and you can also climb up for distant views.
    • Evening: Return to the city and arrange a meal of local jianghu-style Sichuan food or hotpot.
  • Day 3: Heavenly River in a Cave and an Easy Return
    • Morning: Visit Tianyi Valley to see the cave waterfall, caves, and other landscapes. In summer, you can arrange water activities.
    • Afternoon: Go to Lohas City or Baita Park, where you can try kayaking or rest on the large lawn, then start your return journey.

Must-Try Food List

Guang’an cuisine has the flavor of northeastern Sichuan. Overall, it leans toward numbing, spicy, fresh, and aromatic tastes, while also keeping a strong everyday street-food atmosphere:

  • Yangji Mago Noodles

The noodles are chewy, the sauce is rich, the pork liver is tender and smooth, and the fresh numbing flavor stands out.

  • Qinfang Guokui

This charcoal-baked guokui has a crisp outer layer and generous filling, making it good to eat on the go.

  • Anqiao Rice Noodle Shop

The broth is light yet full-bodied, and the lamb is well prepared. It has the familiar taste of a local rice noodle shop.

  • Wang Defu Guiyang Teppanyaki

Cooked and mixed to order with a clear wok aroma, tender beef, and crispy-soft tiger-skin chicken feet.

  • Yuechi Rice Noodles

The rice noodles are fine and smooth, the broth is numbing, spicy, fresh, and fragrant, and the lamb topping is rich, with a distinct old-fashioned flavor.

Accommodation and Transport Guide

  • Transport: If taking high-speed rail, Guang’an South Station is a good first choice because it is relatively close to the city center. Taxis are convenient within the city. For Huaying Mountain and Baozhen Fortress, self-driving or hiring a car is more suitable. Drive carefully on mountain roads; prepare snow chains in winter, and avoid risky driving after rain in summer.
  • Accommodation: Consider staying around Siyuan Square in Guang’an District or along Jin’an Avenue first, as dining and transport are both convenient. If you want to be closer to scenic areas, you can stay in Xiexing Town or in a characterful guesthouse at the foot of Huaying Mountain. If your budget is limited, you can also consider the urban areas of Yuechi County or Wusheng County.

Travel Tips

  • What to Wear: Mountain areas such as Huaying Mountain have a large temperature difference, so bring a light jacket. Several attractions require walking, so comfortable, non-slip sports shoes are recommended.
  • Reservations: Deng Xiaoping’s Former Residence is free to enter, but you need to scan your ID card at the entrance. Arrive early to avoid peak crowds. Guang’an Museum is closed on Mondays, so confirm the opening hours before you go.
  • Safety: Be careful of slipping when taking photos or walking near the water at Tianyi Valley. If joining a night cruise on the Qujiang River, choose a properly operated company and wear a life jacket throughout.
