Yubei

Chongqing is humid and hot in summer, so spring and autumn are more comfortable for travel.

Yubei District is close to Jiangbei Airport. It has indoor tropical rainforest scenery, a mountain amusement park, quarry lakes, and local street dining, making it a good place to visit after arriving in Chongqing or for a short weekend break.

• The Ring Shopping Park: Inside the mall is the roughly 50-meter-high “Muguang Forest,” a tropical rainforest landscape that runs through three floors. It is one of Yubei’s more distinctive indoor sights and is good for sightseeing and photos.

• Tongluoshan Mine Park: Often called “Chongqing’s Little Jiuzhaigou,” this park features blue-green lakes formed in abandoned quarries, set against rocky cliffs. It is good for light hiking and photography; at Pit No. 13, you can go down to the bottom and get close to the water.

• Chongqing Happy Valley: A mountain-themed amusement park with rides such as the Jungle Dragon wooden roller coaster. In the evening, you can ride the Chongqing Eye Ferris wheel and look out over the mountain city’s night views.

• Chongqing Garden Expo Park: Covering 3,300 mu and open for free, the park brings together Jiangnan gardens, northern imperial gardens, and exhibition gardens from several countries. With a wide variety of landscapes and a large area, it is well suited to touring by sightseeing bus.

• Chongqing Central Park: One of the larger urban central parks in Asia. Its thousand-mu sunny lawn is good for picnics, kite flying, and camping; the ginkgo avenue is especially attractive in autumn.

Classic 2-Day Itinerary

• Day 1: Indoor Forest and Local Flavors
  • Morning: Go to The Ring Shopping Park to visit Muguang Forest, then head to the 5th-floor viewing platform to look over the whole landscape and experience the combination of natural scenery and commercial space.
  • Noon: Have a bowl of Chongqing noodles inside The Ring Shopping Park or at Hongwuji Noodle House nearby.
  • Afternoon: Go to Chongqing Central Park for a walk, and have a picnic or fly kites on the sunny lawn to slow down the pace of the trip.
  • Evening: Eat at the long-running neighborhood restaurant Zhou Erwa Old Hot Pot and experience the numbing, spicy flavor of Chongqing hot pot.
• Day 2: Quarry Lake Views and Amusement Rides
  • Morning: Drive to Tongluoshan Mine Park and take a light hike around Pits No. 7 and No. 8, photographing the blue-green quarry lakes and rocky mountain walls.
  • Noon: Eat near the park, or return to the city before arranging lunch.
  • Afternoon: Go to Chongqing Happy Valley and try rides such as Jungle Dragon. For family trips, the Super Wings Training Camp is also an option.
  • Evening: Ride the Ferris wheel for views of Chongqing at night, or go to Grandma Xiong’s Garden to browse the night market and flower market.

Practical Travel Tips

• Transport connections: Yubei District is right next to Jiangbei Airport. A taxi from the airport to The Ring Shopping Park takes about 15 minutes. Many attractions in the district are near Metro Lines 3, 4, and 10, so public transport connections are relatively convenient.
• Visiting Garden Expo Park: The park is very large, and long walks can be tiring. Consider buying a sightseeing bus ticket for around RMB 20, which lets you hop on and off, and check the last bus time in advance.
• Driving to the mine park: Some uphill roads in Tongluoshan Mine Park are narrow, making it difficult for cars to pass each other. It is best to avoid peak times and go early and return early if possible. If using public transport, you can take Metro Line 4 to Shichuan Station and then take a taxi, but it may be hard to get a ride back, so plan ahead.
• Sun and mosquito protection: You may spend a long time outdoors at the mine park and Central Park. UV levels can be high, and there may be many mosquitoes, so bring sunscreen and insect repellent, and wear comfortable sports shoes.
