Fengdu is quite hot in summer, so bring a light jacket if you plan to visit Xueyu Cave or the mountain scenic areas.

Fengdu has both the nearly 2,000-year-old “Ghost City” culture and the strong everyday atmosphere of a new Three Gorges resettlement city. Local folk culture centers on the idea of “encouraging people to do good,” making it a good short weekend trip from central Chongqing.

• Fengdu Ghost City: The scenic area is located around Mingshan on the north bank of the Yangtze River. It blends Taoist, Confucian, and Buddhist culture and is an important place to learn about Fengdu folk traditions. Main sights include Naihe Bridge, Ghost Gate, Wangxiang Terrace, and Tianzi Hall, where you can experience traditional Chinese ideas of the underworld and their moral message of doing good.
• Xueyu Cave: A national 4A-rated scenic area, with temperatures inside the cave staying around 16–18°C year-round. The stalactites are white in color, richly varied in shape, and grow relatively quickly, earning it the name “a wonder of the world’s karst caves.” Guided explanations are available, and a visit usually takes about 1.5 hours. It is especially cool and pleasant in summer.
• Nantian Lake: Centered on alpine lake scenery, with comfortable summer temperatures. It is suitable for camping, stargazing, and enjoying seas of flowers. There are beaches and amusement facilities by the lake, making it good for family trips and summer retreats.
• Shili Hongfeng: Located in Baoluan Town, this area sits at a relatively high altitude, has good vegetation coverage, and is about 10°C cooler than central Chongqing. In autumn, you can see large red maple forests covering thousands of mu; in summer, there are hydrangea flower fields. The glass homestays in the forest are also good for photos.

Recommended Fengdu Specialties

When traveling in Fengdu, besides visiting folk attractions themed around the “underworld,” you can also include local snacks in the county town in your itinerary.

• Fengdu Spicy Chicken: One of Fengdu’s representative dishes and an item of Chongqing intangible cultural heritage. It is usually made with local free-range chicken, soaked in red chili oil, and tastes numbing, spicy, fresh, and fragrant. The meat is firm and chewy. Many shops can vacuum-pack it, making it suitable as a gift to take home.
• Ghost City Hula Ke Chaoshou: An intangible-heritage noodle dish from Fengdu, known for its “hula ke” seasoning. Dried chilies are fried until charred black and then crushed, giving a strong roasted aroma. They are paired with chaoshou, a type of wonton with thin wrappers and generous filling; locals also call chaoshou baomian.
• Bingge Beef Pie: A street snack made by rolling and pan-frying the dough to order. The crust is crisp, the filling is firm and generous, and the flavor is savory and juicy. It costs 6 yuan each and is best eaten hot.
• Ghost City Old Ice Jelly: Mainly handmade ice jelly at affordable prices. The jelly is chewy and springy, with a light bubbly texture. The shop’s liangxia is also worth trying: refreshing, soft, sticky, and noticeably fragrant with rice. A small portion costs 4 yuan.

Classic Itinerary

Depending on how long you stay, you can choose a one-day round trip or a slower two-day visit.

• One-Day Trip (Fengdu Ghost City + County Town Food)
  • Morning: Take the high-speed train from central Chongqing to Fengdu Station, about 50 minutes. After exiting the station, take a taxi or bus to Fengdu Ghost City. It is recommended to enter through the visitor center and visit Naihe Bridge, Ghost Gate, Huangquan Road, Wangxiang Terrace, and finally Tianzi Hall in order. The whole route takes about 3 hours.
  • Afternoon: After coming down the mountain, return to the county town for a meal. Try Fengdu Spicy Chicken and Hula Ke Chaoshou. If time allows, take a taxi to Xueyu Cave. The visit takes about 1.5 hours and lets you experience the cool cave environment.
  • Evening: Return to the county town to continue trying Bingge Beef Pie and Ghost City Old Ice Jelly, then take the high-speed train back.
• Two-Day Trip (Fengdu Ghost City + Mountain Summer Retreat)
  • Day 1: Visit Fengdu Ghost City in the morning. Spend the afternoon in the county town, with the option to go to Chaohua Park. In the evening, try Fengdu night market snacks.
  • Day 2: Drive or charter a car to Nantian Lake or Shili Hongfeng for alpine lake and natural scenery. Return in the afternoon or evening.

Transport Guide

• High-speed rail: Take a bullet train from Chongqing North Station to Fengdu Station. The journey takes about 40–50 minutes. After exiting the station, you can take Bus 204 or a taxi for about 15 yuan to the Ghost City scenic area.
• Coach: Take a long-distance bus from Chongqing Sigongli Transport Hub to Fengdu Passenger Transport Center. The journey takes about 1.5–2 hours.
• Self-driving: From central Chongqing, drive via the Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway to Fengdu County. It takes about 2 hours. Parking in the county town is relatively convenient.

Travel Reminders and Practical Tips

• Ticket discounts: Fengdu Ghost City tickets cost about 100 yuan in peak season and 70 yuan in low season. Students can get half-price tickets with valid ID. It is recommended to buy tickets online in advance, as they are usually cheaper than at the ticket window.
• Night visit experience: During some holidays, the scenic area opens for night light shows, which create a stronger atmosphere, but a separate ticket is required. Daytime and nighttime tickets are not interchangeable, so check the times in advance.
• What to wear: There are many steps in the Ghost City scenic area. The ground inside Xueyu Cave is slippery, and the temperature difference is noticeable. Wear non-slip, comfortable sports shoes and bring a light jacket.
• Mental preparation: The theme of Fengdu Ghost City is folk culture about “punishing evil and promoting good,” not simply a horror experience. However, some sculptures, such as scenes of the Eighteen Levels of Hell, are quite realistic. Timid visitors or those traveling with children may want to explain this in advance.
• Buying local products: When buying Fengdu Spicy Chicken, you can choose well-reviewed old shops in the county town. Prices near the scenic area cable car station may be higher, so confirm whether vacuum packing and delivery are available before buying.
