Qianxi is relatively cool in summer, but bring a light jacket for mountain areas and caves.
Qianxi is a county-level city administered by Bijie City in Guizhou Province. Its urban attractions are not especially concentrated, but it is convenient for visiting key nearby sights. You can also find affordable local food with distinctive flavors, making it a good stop on a summer escape itinerary. Below is a travel reference for Qianxi and the surrounding area.
Recommended Core Attractions
Qianxi city and its surroundings are best known for natural scenery, and you can combine sights flexibly depending on how long you stay.
- Zhijin Cave: Known as the “King of Caves in China,” it has spacious interiors and rich stalactite scenery. The full route is about 6 kilometers and takes around 3 hours to visit. The cave stays at 14–16°C year-round, so bring a light jacket and wear non-slip sneakers.
- Zhijin Grand Canyon: Located near Zhijin Cave, the canyon features landforms such as an underground river and sinkholes. You can take a boat tour (10 yuan per person), and you can also see filming locations related to the water cave scenes from *The Lost Tomb*. If you want to save energy, it is recommended to buy an elevator ticket.
- Wujiangyuan Hundred-Mile Gallery: About a 40-minute drive from downtown Qianxi, this area has calm waters reflecting karst peaks. It is suitable for sightseeing by boat, with better visibility on sunny days. Keep warm if it is windy.
- Baili Azalea Scenic Area: Located around the border area between Qianxi and Dafang, its best viewing period is during the March–April flowering season. In other seasons, the main attraction is forested mountain scenery, so it is not recommended as a special trip outside the flowering period.
Must-Try Food List
Qianxi is often called a “city of food.” Overall costs are friendly, flavors tend to be strong, and it is well suited to people who enjoy staple foods and spicy flavors.
-
Huangba
Soft and sticky in texture, with rice fragrance and sweetness, this is a traditional local snack with a long history.
-
Xuanweifu Beef Rice Noodles
The broth is clear, the beef aroma is pronounced, and the beef tallow adds fragrance without making it feel greasy overall.
-
Luoguo Griddle
Various ingredients are pan-fried in a large black griddle and eaten with chili powder, giving it a rich, bold flavor.
-
Ciba-Wrapped Tofu
Tofu is wrapped in sticky rice cake and pan-fried, with a crisp, fragrant outside and a soft, tender inside. It is a common street snack.
-
Pangzi Braised Rice Noodles
You can choose your own braised toppings. The thick rice noodles soak up the broth, while the fish mint and roasted chili sauce are especially distinctive.
Suggested Itineraries
Depending on the number of travel days, you can choose a relaxed short route or plan a self-drive loop.
- Two-Day Leisure Trip (No Car / High-Speed Rail Travelers):
- Day 1: Arrive at Qianxi Station from your departure point in the morning. In the afternoon, head to Zhijin Grand Canyon, where you can choose a reverse route or take a boat. Visit Zhijin Cave in the evening. Stay overnight near the Zhijin scenic area in Guanzhai Township, and have luoguo griddle locally.
- Day 2: In the morning, take a ride-hailing carpool to Wujiangyuan Hundred-Mile Gallery for a boat tour, then return to Qianxi Station in the afternoon. You can also transfer to a high-speed train to downtown Bijie for sour soup beef.
- Five-Day In-Depth Self-Drive Loop (Small Loop in Southwest Guizhou):
- Day 1: Depart from Guiyang, visit Huangguoshu Waterfall, and stay overnight in Anshun.
- Day 2: Head to Xingyi, visit Maling River Grand Canyon in the afternoon, and stay in Wanfenglin.
- Day 3: Ride an electric scooter slowly through Wanfenglin in the morning, then go up to a viewpoint overlooking the scenery in the afternoon. Stay overnight at Fenglin Buyi.
- Day 4: Go to Wumeng Grassland to see grassland views such as wind turbines, cattle, and sheep, then arrive in Liupanshui in the evening.
- Day 5: Return to Guiyang via Zhijin Cave, ending the trip.
Transportation and Notes
- Transportation: Qianxi has a high-speed rail station, about 1 hour from Guiyang. To get to Zhijin Cave, you can take a bus or a ride-hailing carpool (about 60–100 yuan per car). Baili Gallery is better reached by self-driving or chartered car. Guizhou’s expressways have many bridges and tunnels. Road conditions are generally good, but the speed limit is 110 km/h, so beginners should watch their speed.
- Where to Stay: If staying in downtown Qianxi, consider the area around Sunshine City, where prices are relatively suitable and it is also convenient for getting to the food street. If you plan to visit Zhijin Cave, you can stay in Guanzhai Township, which makes it easier to enter the scenic area early the next day.
- Travel Reminders: The overall experience at Shuixi Ancient Town is fairly ordinary, so it is not recommended as a special trip. Zhijin Cave and the Grand Canyon have many steps, so older travelers and those with limited mobility should choose carefully. In summer, the temperature difference between morning and evening is noticeable in mountain areas, so prepare a jacket for both grasslands and caves.
