Zunyi travel guide

Zunyi is relatively cool in summer, but the weather in the mountains can change quickly.

Zunyi combines revolutionary history, mountain scenery, and a strong sense of local life. It is suitable for a short weekend trip, and also works well as a stop on a journey through northern Guizhou. The following is a suggested 3-day, 2-night itinerary.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Urban Culture and Food): In the morning, visit the Zunyi Conference Site to learn about this highly significant period of history. In the afternoon, walk around Red Army Street and the 1935 Block. Around dusk, go to Fenghuang Mountain Martyrs’ Cemetery to pay respects to the fallen and look out over the old city. In the evening, head to Laoshan Alley to try local snacks.
  • Day 2 (Natural Scenery and Ancient Town Night Views): In the morning, tour Loushan Pass Scenic Area, visit the cliff-carved poetry and Red Army battle sites, and take in the mountain terrain and history behind the line “the mighty pass is like iron.” In the afternoon, drive to Wujiang Village to experience a sculled boat ride and intangible cultural heritage performances. At dusk, watch the night light show and drone performance.
  • Day 3 (Danxia Scenery or Tusi Site): Choose a route based on your interests. If you prefer natural landscapes, visit Chishui Danxia to see the great waterfall and Danxia landforms. If you are more interested in history and culture, go to Hailongtun to explore Guizhou’s only World Cultural Heritage Site and learn about its feng shui layout and military defense system.

Recommended Key Attractions

  • Zunyi Conference Site

A place that witnessed an important historical turning point, with a simple and solemn architectural style and exhibitions worth viewing carefully.

  • Wujiang Village

Stilted houses are built along the water, and the scenery gains extra depth in misty rain. The nighttime lighting creates a strong atmosphere.

  • Maotai Town

Known for its liquor culture, with the aroma of baijiu often lingering in the lanes. The night views and distillers’ grain-based foods are also worth noticing.

  • Chishui Danxia Great Waterfall

The waterfall is about 80 meters wide, with rushing water. The Danxia landforms and misty spray set each other off beautifully.

  • Loushan Pass

A strategically rugged mountain pass, combining Long March historical sites with sweeping mountain-and-river scenery.

Local Food Checklist

  • Sisters Spicy Chicken

Known for its strong sauce aroma and chili heat. The chicken is well seasoned and is a common local Zunyi flavor.

  • Liu Erma Rice Noodles

The rice noodles are soft and smooth, with a fragrant, spicy red chili oil. Good for those who enjoy sour and spicy flavors.

  • Daijia Mutton Rice Noodles in Donggongsi

The thick noodles are soft and springy, the mutton portions are generous, and the broth is savory. Diners often have to wait for a table.

  • Zhongtai Guailu

Known for vegetables blanched in a braised broth. The pork skin and pork intestines are soft and tender, and the dipping sauce is very distinctive.

  • Minsi Mutton Rice Noodles

The thick noodles soak up the red chili oil broth, the mutton is tender with little gaminess, and the spiciness is fairly noticeable.

Transport and Accommodation Guide

  • Transport: It is best to take the high-speed train to Zunyi Railway Station first, as it is relatively close to the old city and only about a 10-minute taxi ride from the main attractions. Zunyi South Railway Station is farther from the city center and will add to your travel time. Attractions within the city are fairly concentrated, so walking combined with ride-hailing is convenient. To reach Wujiang Village, consider taking a direct shuttle bus to the scenic area.
  • Accommodation: For first-time visitors or travelers focused on food, the old city area of Honghuagang is a good choice, as it is close to the conference site and Laoshan Alley, making both sightseeing and dining convenient. Self-driving visitors can stay in Huichuan District or Xinpu New Area, where parking is relatively easier. If you want to fully enjoy the night views of Wujiang Village, you can stay directly in a guesthouse inside the scenic area.

Practical Tips and What to Wear

  • Weather and clothing: Zunyi has a mountainous climate. Daytime sun can be strong, temperatures may drop in the evening, and showers are common. Short sleeves with a light jacket are recommended. Choose non-slip athletic shoes, as many attractions have quite a few steps. It is also a good idea to carry an umbrella for both sun and rain, sun protection, and mosquito repellent.
  • Reservation reminder: Revolutionary sites such as the Zunyi Conference Site are free but require advance reservations. They are usually closed on Mondays, so check opening information before setting out.
  • Food note: Zunyi cuisine is often sour and spicy, and houttuynia, also known as fish mint, is commonly added to dipping sauces. If you are not used to the flavor, you can say “no houttuynia” when ordering.
  • Self-driving note: Parking spaces are limited in the old city area of Honghuagang. The roads have many steep slopes and sharp turns, and congestion is common in peak season. For regular sightseeing, it is better to prioritize public transport.
