Turpan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 14

In October, Turpan is mild during the day and a little cool in the morning and evening, making it a good time to travel outside peak periods.

  • Tuyugou Mazar Village: This is one of the older Uyghur villages still preserved in Xinjiang. Its loess homes are built along the hillside, with a red canyon behind them, giving the area a distinctive local landscape. It is well suited to a slow half-day visit.
  • Kumtag Desert: This desert is very close to the city, where sand dunes meet oasis scenery. It is better to go in the late afternoon. You can ride an off-road vehicle over the dunes, then wait on a higher dune for the golden light at sunset.
  • Grape Valley: In Turpan’s dry, hot environment, Grape Valley is a relatively cool oasis, with continuous grape trellises forming shaded corridors. You can also visit Frog Lane and the Dawaz Folk Custom Park along the way to learn about local life and traditions.
  • Karez Well Source: The karez irrigation system is known, together with the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, as one of “China’s three great ancient engineering projects.” Here, you can enter a real underground channel and see the ancient water system up close. The underground temperature stays around 18°C year-round, so it feels cool.
  • Jiaohe Ruins: This is a large ancient city ruin built from rammed earth. Its remaining walls and earthen platforms preserve the historical atmosphere of an old Silk Road city. The light is softer in the evening, making it good for walking around and also for aerial photography to capture the full layout.
  • Huoyun Valley: Located at the northern foot of the Flaming Mountains, this is an area of red canyon landforms. Two-wheel-drive cars can enter by self-driving. Red rocks, Gobi terrain, and open wilderness create a raw natural landscape, and there are relatively few visitors.

Suggested Itinerary

  • Day 1 (Culture and Desert): In the morning, take the high-speed train from Urumqi to Turpan North Railway Station. The journey takes about 1 hour. First visit Karez Well Source in the morning to feel the coolness of the underground channels. Return to the city around noon to rest and avoid the hottest part of the day. In the afternoon, go to Tuyugou Mazar Village to explore the village and canyon scenery. At dusk, head to Kumtag Desert for an off-road dune ride and wait for sunset. In the evening, you can stay in Shanshan County or return to Turpan city.
  • Day 2 (Ancient City and Oasis): In the morning, visit Jiaohe Ruins to see the thousand-year-old site. At noon, go to Grape Valley to cool off under the grape corridors, eat fruit, and stroll around Frog Lane. If there is enough time in the afternoon, you can drive to Huoyun Valley to experience the red canyon landforms, then return.

Must-Try Local Foods

  • Kuoxima Kelar Baked Buns

The baked buns have a thin, crisp crust and a savory, juicy filling with a rich meaty aroma.

  • Sulaiman Noodle King

The mixed noodles are chewy, and the pilaf is moderately oily, making it suitable for a full meal.

  • Akbar Hand-Grasped Meat

The hand-grasped meat is tender and not very gamey, while the lamb soup is fresh and flavorful, with a very authentic taste.

  • Si La Spicy Chicken

The chicken pieces are large, the wide noodles are chewy, and the sauce is rich, making it good for sharing among several people.

  • Flaming Mountain Yellow Noodles with Grilled Meat

The yellow noodles are smooth and chewy, served with a sour-spicy sauce and tender grilled meat.

How to Choose Where to Stay

  • Around Turpan North Railway Station: This area has convenient transport and is suitable for travelers taking the high-speed train to and from Urumqi. There are chain hotels nearby, with relatively standardized hygiene and management. It suits those who care more about privacy and comfort.
  • Grape Valley Guesthouses: If you want to slow down the pace, you can choose a characterful guesthouse inside Grape Valley, such as near Frog Lane. There are fewer visitors in the morning and evening, and the surroundings are quiet. You can cool off under the grape trellises. Before booking, confirm whether meals are included and whether transport is convenient.
  • Guesthouses Around the Sand Therapy Center: If your main purpose is to experience sand therapy, consider guesthouses within 5 km of the sand therapy center. Some guesthouses have sand pits, and the owners can help with sand burial. Prices are relatively friendly, but the facilities are usually simple, so booking ahead is recommended in peak season.

Transport Guide

  • High-Speed Train Round Trip: The high-speed train from Urumqi to Turpan North Railway Station takes about 1 hour, with tickets costing a little over 50 yuan, making round trips convenient. If you plan to visit Kumtag Desert, you can also go to Shanshan North Railway Station to reduce backtracking.
  • Private Car/Shared Car: Turpan’s attractions are dozens of kilometers apart, so self-driving or hiring a car saves more time. In the low season, a private car costs about 350–450 yuan per day. Drivers can usually help arrange the itinerary and contact desert off-road activities.
  • Small Loop Bus: If you do not hire a car, you can take the 20-yuan small loop bus from the bus stop at Turpan North Railway Station. It connects attractions such as Karez Well, Jiaohe Ruins, and Grape Valley. Before setting off, pay attention to the last bus time and save the dispatcher’s phone number in advance.

Practical Tips

  • Sun Protection and Hydration: October temperatures are relatively comfortable, but the UV rays are still strong. Bring physical sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and a mask. The desert and Gobi areas are dry, so drink water regularly during the trip.
  • Avoid Peak Heat: Try not to stay outdoors for long periods from 12:00 to 16:00. During this time, you can return to the hotel to rest or choose relatively shaded places such as Karez Well and Grape Valley.
  • Visiting the Flaming Mountains: Tickets for the Flaming Mountains scenic area cost 40 yuan. Inside, the main things to see are the giant thermometer and the red rock layers. If you do not enter the scenic area, you can also view similar red mountain scenery from the entrance parking lot or navigate to the area near “Flaming Mountains Back Mountain” (Wanfo Palace).
  • What to Wear: In October, you can wear a thin hoodie or long-sleeved shirt with jeans during the day. The temperature difference between morning and evening is large, so bring a thick outer layer, such as a denim jacket or light down jacket. For the desert and Mazar Village, brown and beige clothing blends better with the surroundings.
  • Sand Therapy Notes: Choose a formal sand therapy hospital or center for sand therapy. It is not recommended to go casually to unknown roadside shops. You may feel tired after sand therapy, so you can have some lamb soup or pigeon soup to replenish yourself.
