Tiemen Pass lies on the northern outskirts of Korla. Once an important pass on the central route of the ancient Silk Road, it was known as the “First Pass of the Western Regions.” It is not the same place as Tiemen Pass City. With its mix of canyon scenery and historic sites, it is well suited to a half-day cultural hike from Korla.
- Ancient Silk Road: Zhang Qian, Ban Chao, and Xuanzang all passed through here on their journeys west. Along the route are cliff carvings, Han and Tang dynasty Silk Road reliefs, and the remains of caves once used by soldiers. Walking here offers a glimpse into the history left by the ancient road.
- Kongque River Canyon: The Kongque River runs between the Huolatage and Kuruktag mountains. It winds through the canyon, creating a landscape of high gorges and a calm lake. At dusk, the river reflects the setting sun and the scene becomes especially peaceful.
- Boundary Between Southern and Northern Xinjiang: The scenic area has a marker stone for this boundary. Standing beside it, you can experience the geographic divide between southern and northern Xinjiang and take a commemorative photo.
- Princess Ridge: Local legend tells the Western Regions love story of Tayier and Zhuohula. From the summit, you can see the entire canyon spread out below, with broad, open views.
Itinerary and Transportation
- Time needed: Plan for 1.5–3 hours. Visiting only the gate tower and the central section of the Silk Road takes about 2 hours. If you continue along the mountain trail to Hui Shui Bay or Princess Ridge, allow about 3 hours.
- Best times to visit: 9:00–11:00 in the morning or 17:00–20:00 in the evening. UV levels are high at midday, and winds in the canyon can also be strong, so avoid staying in the sun for long. May to October is a good time to visit. Vegetation is at its fullest in spring and summer, while September and October offer autumn colors.
- Tickets: Admission is currently free, and no ticket is required.
- Driving: It takes about 20 minutes to drive from central Korla. The scenic area has a free eco-parking lot, and the roads are smooth, making it convenient to drive.
- Taxis/ride-hailing: A one-way ride costs about 20–30 yuan. Because the scenic area is in a valley, it can be difficult to find a ride back after your visit, and waits of more than 20 minutes are sometimes necessary. It is best to request a car about 20 minutes before leaving. You can also ask the driver who drops you off to wait for a fee and take you back to the city.
- Public transportation: Take Tourist Bus Route 3, or take a city bus to a nearby stop and transfer. Since services are infrequent, public transportation should not be your sole plan if you cannot drive.
Clothing and Photography Tips
- What to wear: Light-colored long dresses, workwear, and ethnic clothing all suit the local frontier scenery. Temperatures vary greatly between day and night, so bring a light jacket.
- Footwear: The ancient road has many loose stones and steps. Wear non-slip sneakers or hiking shoes; high heels are unsuitable for the terrain.
- Essentials: Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses. Winds in the canyon can be strong, so hold on to your hat and phone to keep them from being blown away.
- Photo spots: Good choices include a full view of the gate tower entrance, the section where the ancient-road carvings continue into the distance, a mountaintop overlook of the canyon, and sunset reflections beside the Kongque River.
Nearby Food Recommendations
- Master Li’s Handmade Noodles: A noodle shop that has operated locally for years. Its saozi noodles are springy, and you can add noodles for free. A serving costs 18 yuan and goes well with small cold dishes and barbecue.
- Silk Road Fragrant Street · Most Beautiful Xinjiang: The restaurant is clean and the service is attentive. The chicken mixed rice noodles and sauce-flavored chicken fried rice noodles come in generous portions at reasonable prices, and the skewers are also worth trying.
- Pang’s Peppercorn Chicken: A good choice when you want a change of flavor. Its peppercorn chicken and stir-fried dishes offer a wider range of flavors, making it suitable after several days of barbecue and jar-cooked lamb.
Accommodation and Things to Note
- Where to stay: Tiemen Pass is best for a half-day trip, and the scenic area is not suitable for overnight stays. After visiting, return to central Korla, where accommodation and everyday services are more convenient. If your route takes you through Tiemen Pass City, consider Tiemen Pass Silk Road Fragrance Garden Hotel or Yicheng Hotel; their room facilities are relatively new.
- Things to note:
- Distinguish the locations: Tiemen Pass scenic area is an ancient pass on Korla’s northern outskirts, while Tiemen Pass City is a county-level city under Bayingol Mongol Autonomous Prefecture. The two are some distance apart.
- Explore deeper into the canyon: The gate tower is only the entrance. The canyon and Silk Road beyond it are the main attractions, so allow time for hiking.
- Check whether it is open: The scenic area has recently undergone renovation and upgrading. Confirm on the day of your visit that it is open as usual and that no trails are temporarily closed.
- Bring water and snacks: There are few vendors inside, so bring bottled water and a small amount of food in advance.
- Watch the weather and road conditions: Rockfalls may occur after rain or in severe weather. Follow scenic-area announcements, do not cross barriers, and do not climb slopes that are closed to visitors.
