Urumqi travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 13

Urumqi has a large temperature difference between day and night, so it is best to bring a light jacket when you go out.

Urumqi is not only a transit city for trips around Xinjiang; it also offers snowy mountain views and a strong sense of everyday life in China’s western regions. The local schedule is about 2 hours behind inland China, and it does not get dark until around 9:30 p.m., making it a good place to slow down and plan city sightseeing and food experiences at an easy pace.

  • Shuimogou Park

In winter, you can see rime and red walls here. Swans are often active on the lake, and the overall setting is quiet and pleasant.

  • International Grand Bazaar

This area brings together local food and Silk Road atmosphere. It becomes even livelier after the lights come on at night.

  • Hongshan Park

You can climb up for free to look out over the city and snowy mountains, and visit Hongshan Pagoda. It is a good place to go before evening.

  • Xinjiang Museum

Learn about Silk Road civilization over thousands of years through exhibits such as the brocade armguard and the Loulan Beauty mummy.

  • Miao’ergou

A quiet snowy forest setting, distinctive blue ice waterfalls, and horseback riding make this a relaxing spot on the outskirts of the city.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1 (City Culture and Local Life): In the morning, visit the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum to learn about Silk Road history through its cultural relics. For lunch, you can go to Hotan Second Street or Consulate Lane to try local snacks. In the evening, head to Hongshan Park to enjoy the sunset and city night views.
  • Day 2 (One-Day Nature Trip): In the morning, go to Tianshan Tianchi, walk along the lake, and enjoy views of snowy mountains and forests before returning to the city in the afternoon. At night, you can visit the International Grand Bazaar for its night views, or go to Jinquan Mall to buy relatively affordable souvenirs.
  • Day 3 (City Walk or Nearby Excursion): In the morning, take a walk and relax in Shuimogou Park, or go to Hongguangshan Giant Buddha Temple to see the Giant Buddha framed with snowy mountains. In the afternoon, return to the city for coffee, dessert shops, and souvenir shopping before leaving.

Must-Try Local Foods

  • Kashgar Yibazhua

The outside is baked until golden and crisp, with a generous meat filling and a rich meaty aroma in every bite.

  • Nuriman Fig Pilaf

The pilaf rice is soft, glutinous, fragrant, and slightly sweet. The lamb is tender, the side dishes are generous, and portions are large, with refills available.

  • Zhengfei Fresh Milk

The yogurt cheese is smooth and rich, the milk-skin roll is similar to ice cream, and the overall dairy aroma is very pronounced.

  • Master Ma’s Fried Cake Shop

The fried cakes are served fresh from the fryer, with a crisp shell and sweet filling. The rose latte is a good drink pairing.

  • Loulan Secret Grill

The restaurant has a western-region style. The grilled meat is smoky, fragrant, and tender, the baked buns are crisp, and the yogurt zongzi is worth trying.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Where to stay: Consider Zhongshan Road, People’s Square, or areas along Metro Line 1 near the Railway Bureau and Beijing Road first. They are convenient for getting around and have plenty of dining options nearby. The central area around the International Grand Bazaar is lively, but noise can be noticeable and value for money is average, so you may want to avoid it depending on your needs.
  • Getting around the city: Urumqi does not have shared bikes. Daily transport mainly relies on Metro Line 1 and taxis. Attractions in the city are usually not far from each other, and taxi fares are generally around 10–20 yuan.
  • Transport to Tianchi: You can take an official direct shuttle from the high-speed railway station or Hongshan Park, with a round trip costing about 60 yuan. You can also choose a private car or shared car.

Pitfall Avoidance and Practical Tips

  • Carry your ID card with you: Security checks in Xinjiang are relatively strict. You may need to scan your ID card when entering scenic areas, hotels, and some supermarkets, so keep it with you while traveling.
  • Adjust to the time difference: Xinjiang is about 2 hours behind inland China. It usually gets light around 10:00 a.m. and dark around 9:30 p.m. Local lunch is usually around 14:00, and dinner is often after 20:00, so there is no need to head out too early just to keep to a tight schedule.
  • Sun protection and warmth: The local UV rays are strong, so bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The temperature difference between day and night is noticeable. Even in summer, bring a light jacket or hardshell jacket when watching the sunset in the evening or visiting Tianchi.
  • Buy local specialties at markets: For dried fruit, dairy products, and other gifts, you can go to Hongshan Dried Fruit Market or Hualing Dried Fruit Market. You can sample items in the markets, goods are priced by kilogram, and they are usually cheaper than in commercial streets at scenic areas. For small ornaments and clothing, Jinquan Mall is a good option.
  • Museum reservation: The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Museum receives many visitors, so it is recommended to book 1–3 days in advance through its official WeChat account. The museum is closed on Mondays, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary.

Optional One-Day Trips Nearby

If you have more time, in addition to Tianshan Tianchi, you can choose Tianshan Grand Canyon to see snowy mountains, autumn forests, and Swan Lake; go to Dabancheng Salt Lake to photograph the “mirror of the sky”; or take a high-speed train to Turpan to visit the back side of the Flaming Mountains and Tuyugou Mazar Village. The round trip by high-speed train takes about 1 hour.
