Temperatures in Baishan's mountains vary noticeably between morning and evening, so bring a jacket when visiting in summer or autumn.
Baishan lies at the southwestern foot of the Changbai Mountains, with forest covering more than 84% of its land. Known as a land of forests and ginseng, it combines volcanic landscapes, border rivers and alpine meadows, making it well suited to a nature-focused trip.
- Changbai Mountain Tianchi Lake: This volcanic crater lake sits at an elevation of 2,189 meters, surrounded by 16 peaks, with clear blue water. Clouds and mist are relatively less common in September and October, giving you a better chance of seeing the entire lake.
- Xigu Scenic Area, Linjiang: This scenic area features alpine grasslands and a maple valley at an elevation of about 1,260 meters. Cattle can often be seen grazing in the meadows, and clear days offer sweeping views, earning it the nickname “Northeast China's Little Altay.”
- Xianrengu Forest Park: This nature reserve has free admission and combines streams, waterfalls, old-growth forest and mountaintop grasslands. Its quiet, natural setting is suitable for self-drive trips, camping and easy hikes.
- Wangtian'e Scenic Area: Dozens of waterfalls of varying sizes flow through the gorge, cascading down columnar basalt formations. Together, the waterfalls and distinctive rock faces create a striking geological landscape.
- Longshan Lake Scenic Area: Located along National Highway G331, this area offers sightseeing boat trips among one island, three caves and 16 peaks. Along the river, you can also enjoy views of the two countries on opposite banks.
- Jinjiang Wooden House Village: The village preserves traditional wooden homes that are free to visit, in a simple, peaceful setting. Visitors can try activities such as making thin pancakes and digging for ginseng. With few commercial facilities, it is a good place to explore at a leisurely pace.

Travel Tips
- Ticket Reservations: Changbai Mountain requires real-name reservations for timed entry. Book ahead through official channels for visits in July and August, December through the end of February, and public holidays. Tickets are not sold on site, so avoid going without a confirmed reservation.
- Temperature Changes and Clothing: Mountain temperatures vary greatly between day and night, and summit winds can be strong. Bring a light jacket or outdoor shell even in summer. For September and October, consider three layers: a quick-drying base layer, fleece and windproof jacket, plus a scarf and hat.
- Weather: Views at Tianchi Lake and Xigu Scenic Area depend heavily on the weather. Rain or thick fog may obscure the scenery. Check the forecast before setting out, and consider viewing later if the fog is heavy.
- Driving Conditions: Some roads in Xianrengu and Xigu are gravel mountain roads or winding routes with many narrow bends. Drive slowly in a passenger car and watch for slippery surfaces. Less experienced drivers should choose their vehicle and route carefully.
- Insect Protection and Supplies: Mosquitoes and other insects are common in the forests, so bring repellent. Shops are limited within the scenic areas, so prepare drinking water and snacks in advance.
- Fire Restrictions: Once the fire prevention season begins in mid-September, forest attractions such as Laotudingzi and Xianrengu may ban all camping and open flames, including overnight tents and barbecues.
