Songyuan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 20

Songyuan has large temperature swings between morning and evening, so pack a thick jacket for autumn trips.

Songyuan combines river scenery, a grassland atmosphere and fishing and hunting traditions. Its relaxed pace makes it a good base for short trips nearby. Chagan Lake's winter fishing is the signature seasonal attraction, while summer and autumn are good for lakeside views and local food.

  • Chagan Lake: One of China's ten largest freshwater lakes, with wide-open waters and lush reeds in summer. In winter, visitors can watch the traditional winter fishing, which is listed as national intangible cultural heritage. There is no general admission fee, but individual attractions charge separately. Sightseeing shuttles are available.
  • Longhua Temple: One of Northeast China's larger Buddhist temple complexes, with a spacious riverside setting and free admission. Free vegetarian meals are served daily at 11 a.m. It is also a pleasant place for an autumn stroll.
  • Dabusu Mud Forest: Located in Qian'an County, this landscape was formed by rain eroding a loess plateau. Clusters of earth pillars resemble a natural sculpture park. With relatively few visitors, it is well suited to photography and quiet exploration.
  • Miaoyin Temple: Jilin Province's only Tibetan Buddhist temple combines Tibetan, Han Chinese and Mongolian architectural styles. Its white pagoda and red walls make a good backdrop for traditional-style photos.
  • Genghis Khan Cultural Park: A large, open park featuring a giant statue of Genghis Khan. Its greenery and quiet surroundings make it a pleasant place for walks and photos.

Suggested Itinerary

  • Day 1: City Culture and Everyday Life: Start the morning at Songyuan's morning market for a glimpse of local life, then visit Songyuan Museum, which brings three museums together and offers souvenir stamps. Continue to Genghis Khan Cultural Park. Visit Longhua Temple in the afternoon, then try Northeastern Chinese dishes at Hasar Road Food Street or Jiangnan Night Market in the evening.
  • Day 2: Chagan Lake Scenery: Head to Chagan Lake early and enjoy the views from the wooden boardwalk, then visit the Fishing and Hunting Culture Museum to learn about traditions spanning a thousand years. Have a Chagan Lake fish banquet for lunch, then spend the afternoon by the lake and watch the sunset reflected on the water before returning to the city in the early evening.
  • Day 3: Explore an Unusual Landscape (Driving Recommended): If you have enough time and access to a car, visit the Dabusu Mud Forest in Qian'an County to see its distinctive landforms, then drive back in the afternoon.

Local Food Recommendations

Songyuan's food combines the hearty style of Northeastern Chinese cooking with Mongolian culinary traditions. Portions are generally generous and prices affordable.

  • Meihong Cake Shop

A long-established Songyuan bakery known for freshly baked bread and crisp millet pastries.

  • Manman Jianghu Cuisine

The four-flavor duck wings are sweet and spicy and go well with rice. Portions are generous overall.

  • Qilixiang Mala Mix

A lightly seasoned, easy-to-enjoy spicy mix with a pronounced sesame and peanut sauce aroma.

  • A Bowl of Time

Serves home-style meals, including soft, well-seasoned tomato pasta.

  • Dongbeixiang Malatang

Prices start at 13 yuan per person, with generous portions. Sesame sauce and fried skewers are popular choices.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Transport: High-speed trains run directly to Songyuan Railway Station. From there, city attractions are easy to reach by bus or taxi. Tourist coaches and taxis run to Chagan Lake, with a journey time of about 40–60 minutes. Driving or hiring a car with a driver is a good option for Dabusu Mud Forest and other attractions in surrounding counties.
  • Accommodation: In the city, consider staying near Songyuan Railway Station or Feida City Olympic Cultural Park, where there are plenty of shopping centers and restaurants and transport is convenient. At Chagan Lake, local fishing-family guesthouses offer affordable stays in the low season and freshly made fish soup.

Travel Tips

  • Keep Warm and Prepare for Wind: Songyuan's northerly location brings noticeable temperature swings between morning and evening, with strong winds along the river and across the lake. Pack a thick jacket, hat and scarf even in autumn.
  • Visiting Chagan Lake: The scenic area is large, so check the map and plan your route when you arrive. If you are not driving, confirm shuttle departure times in advance to avoid missing the last service.
  • Winter Fishing Season: If Chagan Lake's winter fishing is your main reason for visiting, plan your trip between late December and Chinese New Year. In other seasons, the lake scenery is the main draw.
  • Where to Eat: Experiences can vary in popular dining areas such as Muslim Food Street. Morning markets and restaurants in older residential neighborhoods frequented by locals tend to offer more consistent prices and flavors.
