Temperature differences between day and night are significant in the Tianshan mountain areas, so bring a light jacket even when traveling in summer.
Changji Prefecture is close to Ürümqi. The route combines alpine lakes, the Hundred-Li Danxia landscape, Hui ethnic culture, and local cuisine, making it suitable for a short trip in Xinjiang or as a stopover on a longer loop itinerary.
Nature and Scenic Areas
- Tianshan Tianchi: This 5A-rated scenic area is known for its alpine lake, spruce forests, and the snow-covered Bogda Peak. Take the Mayashan Cableway for an aerial view of the lake and enjoy the scenery where snowcapped mountains meet the water.
- Jiangbulake: The main attractions here are the Tianshan wheat fields and mountain grasslands. It is known as the “Alps of the East.” From June to August, the wheat fields turn golden. The wooden walkways are suitable for easy walks and the area is also convenient for driving tours and photography.
- S101 Provincial Highway: Known for its hundred-li Danxia landscape, this scenic road is called the “Little Duku.” Along the way are sites such as the Colorful Mountains of Liuhuangou and the Jiangshan Duojiao Viewing Platform. Most viewpoints are free of charge, making the route suitable for scenic drives.
- Kenswat Reservoir: Located along S101, the reservoir has a turquoise-green surface surrounded by Danxia mountains, earning it the nickname “Little Sayram Lake.” The scenic area has a glass bridge, cableway, and lakeside café, where you can stop and rest.
- Nurga Grand Canyon: Danxia landforms and the milky-white “Milk Valley” appear side by side in this broad, largely untouched canyon. It is free to visit and suits travelers who prefer lesser-known natural scenery and aerial photography.
Cultural Sites and City Leisure
- Changji Hui Snack Street: This district has a strong ethnic character, with local specialties such as Jiu Wan San Xing Zi, fried rice cakes, and noodle soup. Once the lights come on at night, it is a good place to stroll and eat.
- Xinjiang Grand Theater: The building’s design is inspired by the snow lotus and is a cultural landmark of Changji. Its exterior is good for night photography, and large-scale ethnic song-and-dance performances are also held inside.
- Changji Museum: Admission is free. The museum introduces Changji’s history, ethnic cultures, and local customs, with the traditional clothing exhibition being especially appealing.
- Northern Tianshan Foothills Wine Culture Street: Combining wine culture displays, dining, and casual bars, this area has the style of a European town and is suitable for evening walks and architectural photography.
Changji Specialty Food Recommendations
Besides big-plate chicken, Changji has many other local specialties worth trying during your itinerary:
- Jiu Wan San Xing Zi: A representative dish at Changji Hui banquets and a region-level item of intangible cultural heritage. Nine porcelain bowls are arranged in three rows of three. The dishes are mainly steamed or stewed, with tender beef and mutton and a mix of meat and vegetables, making them suitable for sharing.
- Meatball Soup with You Ta Zi: A common local breakfast combination. The soup is made with beef bones and served with beef meatballs and glass noodles, alongside flaky, tender, and crisp You Ta Zi.
- Yellow Noodles with Barbecue: Commonly found at night markets, the yellow noodles are chewy and the barbecue combines lean and fatty meat with a rich cumin aroma. Eating it with yogurt helps cut the richness.
- Peppercorn Chicken: The chicken is firm and strongly flavored with peppercorns, and is usually served with belt noodles, which absorb the broth and seasoning.
- Baked Buns: A common night-market snack with a crisp baked exterior and a mutton filling. They are very juicy when freshly baked, so be careful of the heat when eating them.
Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
With enough time, you can link Tianshan Tianchi, the S101 route, and Changji city in a 3-day, 2-night trip without much backtracking.
- Day 1: Depart Ürümqi → Tianshan Tianchi → Stay in Fukang
- Morning: Drive about 1.5 hours from Ürümqi to Tianshan Tianchi. Entering around 8 a.m. is recommended to avoid the busiest crowds.
- Afternoon: Take the shuttle bus to the main lake, see the Dinghai Needle, then ride the Mayashan Cableway for a panoramic view of Tianchi from above.
- Evening: Return to downtown Fukang or stay at a guesthouse near the scenic area. Plan on big-plate chicken and baked buns for dinner.
- Day 2: Fukang → S101 Hundred-Li Danxia → Kenswat Reservoir → Stay in Changji
- Morning: Drive onto S101 Provincial Highway and visit the Colorful Mountains of Liuhuangou and the Jiangshan Duojiao Viewing Platform to see the Danxia landforms.
- Afternoon: After reaching Kenswat Reservoir, rest at the lakeside café, then visit the glass bridge and cableway to experience the “Little Sayram Lake” scenery formed by the water and Danxia mountains.
- Evening: Return to downtown Changji, eat at Changji Hui Snack Street, and try a Jiu Wan San Xing Zi banquet.
- Day 3: Leisure in Changji → Return or Continue to the Next Stop
- Morning: Visit Changji Museum to learn about the local history and culture, or go to the Xinjiang Grand Theater plaza to photograph the building’s exterior.
- Afternoon: Try meatball soup with You Ta Zi in the city, then buy nang and dried fruit as souvenirs before returning home or continuing to Ili or the Duku Highway.
If time is limited, you can also make a same-day round trip from Ürümqi to Tianshan Tianchi, stop at Liuhuangou in the afternoon to see the Danxia scenery, and return to Ürümqi for dinner.
Accommodation and Transportation Tips
- Where to stay: When visiting Tianchi, consider staying in Fukang or at a guesthouse near the scenic area. If city sightseeing and food are the focus, stay near Hui Street or People’s Park in downtown Changji, where taxis are convenient. Changji Yingbin Hotel has a pleasant environment and suits travelers who value accommodation quality.
- Getting around: Changji’s main attractions, including Tianchi, Jiangbulake, and the S101 route, are spread out, and public transportation is not very convenient. Driving or hiring a car is more suitable. It takes about 40 minutes to drive from Ürümqi to downtown Changji and about 1.5 hours to Tianchi.
Practical Tips and Precautions
- Temperature and clothing: Xinjiang’s mountains and grasslands have marked day-night temperature differences. Even in midsummer, bring a windproof shell or light jacket for Tianchi or S101, and dress in layers that are easy to add or remove.
- Sun protection and moisturization: UV levels are strong, so bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The climate is dry, so moisturizing spray and lip balm are also useful.
- Driving safety: Some sections of S101 have no mobile signal, so download offline maps before setting out. There are few gas stations along the route, so fill the tank beforehand. Rain may cause rockfalls in the mountains, so check real-time road conditions in advance.
- Respect local customs: Changji is a Hui autonomous prefecture. Respect local ethnic customs and dietary restrictions during your trip.
- Ticket reservations: For popular sites such as Tianshan Tianchi, reserve and purchase tickets in advance through the official WeChat account. Tickets for the Mayashan Cableway can be bought on the scenic-area shuttle bus at a lower price.
