Huangshan travel guide

October weather on Huangshan is relatively cool, making it a good time to hike and enjoy the autumn scenery.

Huangshan is famous for its sea of clouds, oddly shaped pine trees, and unusual rock formations. Plan your autumn visit around these sights, choosing between a day trip and an overnight stay at the summit based on your fitness level.

Tickets and Transportation

  • Ticket reservations: During the peak season, tickets to Huangshan Scenic Area cost 190 yuan per person. Book in advance through the scenic area's official reservation channel; tickets may sell out if you wait to buy them on site.
  • Scenic-area buses: A round-trip ticket costs 38 yuan per person, and this bus is required for entering the mountain. After reaching the Tangkou South Gate transfer center by car or taxi, change to a bus for the cable-car station.
  • Cable cars and sightseeing railways: A one-way ticket for the Yungu Cableway on the back slope costs 80 yuan, while the Yuping Cableway on the front slope costs 90 yuan. The sightseeing cable car in Xihai Grand Canyon costs 100 yuan. Taking cable cars up and down can reduce the amount of walking.
  • High-speed rail connection: After taking a high-speed train to Huangshan North Station, you can catch an official bus outside the station to the Tangkou transfer center. The fare is about 20 yuan, and the journey takes around 50 minutes.

Classic Routes

A route entering from the back slope and leaving via the front slope spreads out the climbs more evenly, making it easier to manage your energy.

  • Two-day in-depth itinerary (including sunrise and sunset):
    • Day 1: Early in the morning, take a bus from the South Gate to Yungu Temple, then take the Yungu Cableway up the mountain. Visit Begin-to-Believe Peak, Pen-Rocking Flower, and Monkey Watching the Sea in sequence, then watch the sunset from Bright Summit and stay overnight at the summit.
  • Day 2: Before dawn, head to Bright Summit or Begin-to-Believe Peak to wait for the sunrise. After breakfast, visit Xihai Grand Canyon and take the small train uphill. Then pass Aoyu Peak and the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder on the way to Greeting Guests Pine. At the end of the route, take the Yuping Cableway down the mountain.
  • One-day route (6–7 hours, focused on saving energy):
    • Take the Yungu Cableway up the mountain, passing Begin-to-Believe Peak, Monkey Watching the Sea, Flying-Over Rock, Bright Summit, Aoyu Peak, the Hundred-Step Cloud Ladder, and Greeting Guests Pine, then take the Yuping Cableway down.
    • For a same-day return, you can skip an in-depth hike through Xihai Grand Canyon, leaving time for the main sights while reducing the physical strain of a long descent.

Accommodation

  • Accommodation at the foot of the mountain in Tangkou Town: Day-trippers and travelers looking to keep costs down can stay in Tangkou Town. It is close to the South Gate transfer center, where comfortable rooms are available for just over 100 yuan per person. It is also convenient to take a bus into the mountain early the next morning.
  • Hotels at the summit: If you plan to watch the sunrise or sunset, or prefer a more relaxed itinerary, consider Baiyun Hotel, Bright Summit Villa, Paiyunlou Hotel, or Yupinglou Hotel. Their locations make sightseeing convenient, but facilities are relatively basic. Prices are about 1,000–2,000 yuan, and rooms should be booked one to two months in advance.

Huizhou Cuisine and Local Snacks

  • Stinky Mandarin Fish: This representative Huizhou dish has a distinctive aroma and a fresh, savory taste. The fish flakes apart easily, making it a good choice for visitors who want to experience Huizhou cuisine.
  • Hairy Tofu: Its surface is covered with fine fuzz. Pan-frying creates a crisp outer layer while the inside remains soft and tender; it can be served with chili sauce.
  • Huangshan Sesame Cake: Filled with preserved vegetables and braised pork, it is crisp and savory. There are many vendors at the foot of the mountain, and it also makes a good souvenir.
  • Stone Ear and Free-Range Chicken Soup: This farmhouse dish from Huizhou is served hot and can help restore your energy after hiking.

*Food and drinking water on the mountain are expensive. Bottled water costs about 10–15 yuan, and grilled sausages cost 15 yuan. You can bring a small amount of bread and chocolate, along with a thermos; free hot water is available on the mountain.*

Reservations, Equipment, and Timing

  • Tian都 Peak reservations: Tian都 Peak operates on a rotating rest schedule and requires reservations. Daily admission is limited to 3,000 people, and tickets must be booked two days in advance through the scenic area's official reservation channel. Entry is not allowed without a reservation. Visitors afraid of heights or with high blood pressure or heart disease should carefully consider whether to climb.
  • Clothing and footwear: Temperatures at the summit are 5–8°C lower than at the foot of the mountain, and winds are stronger. Bring a windproof jacket or shell. Jeans become heavy when wet and dry slowly, so they are unsuitable for hiking; wear non-slip sports shoes or hiking boots instead.
  • What to bring: Consider bringing a disposable raincoat, hiking pole, and knee supports. Umbrellas are prohibited at the summit because strong winds can turn them inside out or cause injuries. Hiking poles cost about 5–10 yuan at the foot of the mountain but 30 yuan on the mountain.
  • Luggage storage: If you plan to stay overnight at the summit, leave large luggage at your hotel or the transfer center below and take only a small bag and a change of clothes up the mountain.
  • Descent timing: The cable cars usually stop operating around 16:30–16:40. Plan your return in advance and leave extra time; if you miss the last service, you will have to walk down.
