Liu'an is cool in the mountains in autumn, with a considerable temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring a jacket when heading into the mountains.
- Tiantangzhai: A national 5A-rated scenic area, it features the Dabie Mountains' primeval forest and one of the few remaining intact forest landscapes in East China. It is also the Dabie Mountains' second-highest peak, with its ridge spanning Anhui and Hubei provinces and 108 waterfalls throughout the area. You can first take the cable car uphill, admire the sea of clouds and sunrise from Zheren Peak, then hike along the Baimafeng boardwalk.
- Wanfo Lake: The lake is broad and clear, and is known as Anhui's “Qiandao Lake.” When taking a boat to the islands in the middle of the lake, you can visit Zhouyu Island and Fengqing Island. The Longhekou Dam has a distinctive industrial landscape. The local clay-pot fish head soup is worth trying.
- Western Anhui Grand Rift Valley: The main sights are its V-shaped fissure and narrow slot canyon, with some sections so tight that you must turn sideways to pass. There are also continuous uphill sections along the route. A full visit takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and is better suited to visitors with outdoor hiking experience who enjoy adventure.
- Yanzi River Grand Canyon: The canyon extends deep into the mountains, with clear streams. The first section is mainly river-valley scenery, while the latter section features a 100-meter waterfall. The air is fresh during an autumn hike, and you can also ride a zipline to experience the canyon from above.
- Maotanchang Ming and Qing Old Street: The old town district is free to enter. Red lanterns hang along the flagstone streets, with Huizhou-style ancestral halls next to a revolutionary memorial museum. While exploring, you can buy local chestnuts and jujube liquor to experience the atmosphere of everyday street life.
- Xichagu Theme Park: Extensive Liu'an Guapian tea gardens line the water, with wooden boardwalks across the hillsides, making it suitable for a light hike. The park also has a suspension bridge and a boat dock. Light-colored clothing goes well with the tea garden scenery.
Must-Try Local Specialties
- Jinzhai Hanging Pot: Ingredients such as cured meat, free-range chicken and dried bamboo shoots are stewed together over charcoal. The broth becomes rich, and buns are stuck around the rim of the pot. Sharing the pot in autumn and winter is especially comforting.
- Wanfo Lake Clay-Pot Fish Head: Bighead carp is stewed for a long time until the broth turns milky white. The fish is tender, fresh and not very fishy, making this a signature dish around Wanfo Lake.
- Liu'an Breakfast Three-Piece Set: Wupaili is home to many local breakfast shops. Chicken-stuffed buns with spicy pepper soup are a common pairing; fried buns have crisp exteriors, while pork-head-meat noodles are rich with braising spices.
- Haozi Baba: More widely available in spring, this snack combines tender artemisia, glutinous rice flour and diced cured meat, then fries them until the surface is slightly crisp and the inside is soft and chewy, with a grassy herbal aroma.
- Liu'an Soy Sauce Duck: The duck is savory and chewy, with a lingering flavor. It is a good local braised specialty to try and is also convenient to buy and take home.

Practical Transport and Pitfall-Avoidance Tips
- Transport: Liu'an's attractions are spread out, so driving makes it easier to connect the itinerary. After arriving at Liu'an Station by high-speed rail, you can transfer to a bus or take a taxi. Public transport services and connections to more remote attractions such as Tiantangzhai are relatively limited.
- Where to Stay: The city has plenty of accommodation, with convenient dining and transport, so you can stay for one or two nights. For a forest setting, consider a hot-spring guesthouse near Tiantangzhai or Wanfo Lake.
- What to Wear: Mountain temperatures vary considerably between day and night, so bring a jacket in autumn. Western Anhui Grand Rift Valley and Tiantangzhai both involve walking; wear non-slip sports shoes and avoid high heels and sandals.
- Things to Note: Choose medicinal herbs and hanging pots at scenic-area entrances carefully; old-style local restaurants in the city usually make it easier to compare flavors. Some sections of Western Anhui Grand Rift Valley are mossy and slippery, so slow down. Decide whether to try paid activities such as glass slides according to your energy level.
- Souvenirs: Besides Liu'an soy sauce duck, you can buy Liu'an Guapian tea, known for its fresh fragrance and lingering sweetness, as well as Huoshan dendrobium. Buy tea and dendrobium from reputable tea shops or supermarkets.
