Chizhou travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 23

Chizhou is well suited to a weekend or short holiday. Here you can explore the Buddhist culture of Jiuhua Mountain, the valleys of Guniujiang, and the lakes and hills associated with poems by Li Bai and Du Mu. Take your time and enjoy a relaxed visit around the city and its scenic areas.

  • Jiuhua Mountain

This is a sacred site dedicated to Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. You can see seas of clouds along the mountain trails and enjoy snowy scenery in winter.

  • Pingtian Lake

Li Bai once described its waters as “like a bolt of silk.” Walk along the lake to enjoy expansive views of the water and surrounding hills.

  • Guniujiang

This mountain area has gorges and streams, and you can also try bamboo rafting. It is ideal for getting close to nature.

  • Dayuan Cultural Park

The park features a 99-meter statue of Ksitigarbha. Visitors can touch the Buddha’s feet and climb the lotus throne for a closer look.

  • Huacheng Temple

As the founding temple of Jiuhua Mountain, it is a place to learn about local Buddhist culture and pray for blessings.

3 Days, 2 Nights

  • Day 1: Explore the city
    • Morning: Visit Chizhou Museum or Xiushanmen Museum to learn about Chizhou’s history. Both museums require advance reservations and are closed on Mondays.
    • Afternoon: Take a walk along the bluestone lanes in Xinghua Village, where you can also take photos in a traditional-style setting.
    • Evening: Cycle around Pingtian Lake and watch the sunset from the “Waterway Road.”
    • Night: Head to Xiushanmen Night Market or Xiaosu Street to try local snacks.
  • Day 2: Visit Jiuhua Mountain
    • All day: Visit Jiuhua Mountain Scenic Area. Focus on sightseeing, taking the scenic shuttle bus and cable car to Huatai Scenic Area. If you plan to pray for blessings, visit the Flesh Body Palace, Baisui Palace, and the summit of Tiantai.
    • Night: Stay on Jiuhua Street, or descend the mountain to visit Dayuan Cultural Park and its 99-meter statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, then go to Nuo Xian Town for an evening performance.
  • Day 3: Head to Shitai
    • Morning: Drive yourself or hire a car to Guniujiang Scenic Area in Shitai County, where you can see the clear waters of Longmen Pool and the Four-Tier Waterfall.
    • Afternoon: Stop at Yanjia Ancient Village or Baishiling Ancient Village to see Huizhou-style villages, then begin your return journey.

Chizhou Food

  • Chizhou Shaobing

Crisp on the outside and soft inside, with common savory fillings such as shredded radish and vermicelli. It makes a good snack.

  • Stinky Mandarin Fish

It has a distinctive aroma and garlic-petal-like flesh, with a savory flavor that also goes well with rice.

  • Chicken with Snails

The chicken is stewed until tender, while the snails absorb the flavor of the broth. The rich soup is good for mixing with rice.

  • Stir-Fried Noodles

The noodles are coated in a rich sauce and served with plenty of toppings. This is a hearty, strongly flavored staple.

  • Fried Skewers

Fried until crisp on the outside and served with dipping sauce; fried rice cakes are also one of the options.

Accommodation and Transportation Tips

  • Where to stay:
    • For exploring the city: Stay near Xiushanmen in Guichi District or around Pingtian Lake for convenient transport. There are also night markets nearby, and accommodation is relatively affordable.
    • For mountain visits and prayers: Stay on Jiuhua Street or near the Jiuhua Mountain Visitor Center so you can enter the mountain early the next day.
  • For cool scenery by the water: Stay at a guesthouse opposite Guniujiang Scenic Area in Shitai County. It is convenient for enjoying the mountain and water scenery and taking things at a slower pace.
  • Transportation:
    • High-speed rail: Take a train to Chizhou Station, then take a taxi or bus after exiting the station.
    • Driving: Jiuhua Mountain, Shitai County, and the city center are some distance apart, and the attractions are scattered. Driving yourself or hiring a car makes planning easier, and parking is relatively convenient.
    • Direct tourist buses: Direct buses to Jiuhua Mountain and Guniujiang run from Chizhou Station. Visitors not driving can purchase package tickets in advance through the official WeChat account.

Travel Tips

  • Advance ticket reservations: Chizhou Museum and Xiushanmen Museum are free to enter, but require advance reservations and are closed on Mondays. Jiuhua Mountain tickets are valid for three days, with one entry to the mountain.
  • Clothing and footwear: It can be slightly cool in the mountains in the morning and evening, so bring a light jacket. Wear non-slip athletic shoes when hiking in Guniujiang or Jiuhua Mountain. For photos at Pingtian Lake and Guniujiang, consider wearing light-colored clothes.
  • Mosquito protection and sun protection: There are many mosquitoes and other insects in the mountains and by the lake, so bring insect repellent. Also prepare sunscreen and a hat for daytime outings.
  • Local flavors: Chizhou cuisine is generally rich and oily, and many dishes are mildly spicy. If you are not used to spicy food, mention this when ordering.
