Suzhou lies in northern Anhui, where Chu–Han history and everyday local life together shape the city’s travel character. Life moves at a relaxed pace here, and the city also has the dialect nickname “Xuxian” (“dotted line”). It is well suited to an itinerary combining museums, urban parks, and county-level attractions.
Urban Culture and Leisure
- Suzhou Museum: Admission is free. Learn about Suzhou’s historical changes through Chu–Han artifacts and canal remains, and take note of the exhibition design.
- Suzhou Art Museum: Designed by the China Academy of Art, the building creates a striking contrast between its glass curtain walls and concrete. The light around sunset is ideal for photographing the architecture.
- Xinbian River Scenic Area: A national water conservancy scenic area with a flat, straight greenway along the river. Walk or cycle while taking in the city’s waterfront views.
- Delta Ecological Park: This large urban park features a Big Water Drop landmark and a Ferris wheel. Watch the sunset in the evening and stay after dark for the musical fountain.
Forest and Countryside Scenery
- Huangcangyu National Forest Park: With extensive forest cover, the park is ideal for hiking along mountain paths. Look out for the thousand-year-old Chinese sweet gum, Ruiyun Temple, and Huangcang Cave.
- Dangshan Pear Tree King Scenic Area: In spring, enjoy vast stretches of pear blossoms; in autumn, see pears hanging from the branches. The century-old Pear Tree King has an impressive shape and complements the surrounding rural scenery.
History, Culture, and Family Outings
- Lingbi Strange Stone Cultural Park: Hui-style gardens provide the setting for displays of unusual stones. Pavilions and towers beside the water add variety to the visit, making it suitable for admiring stones and taking traditional-style photos.
- Yu Ji Cultural Park: This is the birthplace of the story of Farewell My Concubine. The park contains red walls, historic buildings, stele corridors, and a tomb mound, offering a chance to learn the story and take photos.
- Suzhou Wildlife Park: Home to Anhui’s only giant panda, Youbang, as well as white tigers, lions, and other animals. The park also offers close-up feeding experiences, making it a good choice for a family itinerary.
Local Food Guide
Portions in Suzhou are generous and prices are reasonable. With plenty of noodles and meat dishes to choose from, the following local flavors offer an introduction to the area’s cuisine.
Signature Dishes
- Fuliji Roast Chicken: One of China’s four famous chickens, with glossy reddish skin, tender meat that comes easily off the bone, and a rich braised aroma. Even the meat around the bones is flavorful.
- Huangcangyu Mushroom Chicken: A popular local home-style dish. The chicken is stewed until tender, while the mushrooms absorb the broth and become especially savory.
- Xiaoxian Mutton Soup: A milky-white broth with tender mutton. The flavor is fresh with little of the usual gaminess and is not greasy. Locals often eat it with layered fried flatbread for a familiar everyday meal.
- Lingbi Clay-Pot Chicken: Flatbreads are stuck to the sides of the pot while the chicken stews. Part of each bread soaks in the broth and absorbs the meat juices, while the rest turns crisp, letting you enjoy both chicken and bread.
Snacks and Breakfast Foods
- Xiaoxian Mianpi: White, thin, smooth, soft, and pleasantly chewy. It is known for its special chili oil and can be eaten rolled or mixed cold, with a tangy, spicy flavor.
- Suzhou Rolled Flatbread: A chewy baked flatbread filled with fried vegetables, meat skewers, and braised dishes, then spread with a special sauce. It is inexpensive and filling.
- Sa Tang: A broth simmered from an old hen and pork ribs, with an egg whisked in to create delicate strands. Pepper and sesame oil are added at the end. It is a local breakfast option.
- Tangmian: Semi-dry noodles are blanched in boiling water and served with rich broth and a special meat sauce, then topped with cilantro, minced garlic, and chili oil. The noodles are chewy, with a tangy, spicy flavor.
Sample Itineraries
- Day 1: Urban Culture and Street Food: Visit Suzhou Museum in the morning to trace the city’s history. In the afternoon, tour Suzhou Art Museum and admire its architecture. Before sunset, head to Delta Ecological Park, stay for the musical fountain at night, then eat rolled flatbread and mianpi in a downtown alley.
- Day 2: Forest Hike or Family Outing: Drive to Huangcangyu National Forest Park in Xiaoxian for a hike, then enjoy mushroom chicken after descending. Alternatively, visit Suzhou Wildlife Park to see the giant panda, followed by a walk through Xinbian River Scenic Area in the afternoon.
- Day 3: County Cultural Tour: In Lingbi County, visit Strange Stone Cultural Park and Yu Ji Cultural Park in sequence to learn about stone appreciation traditions and Chu–Han history. Have Lingbi clay-pot chicken before heading home.
Transport and Accommodation
- Transport: High-speed trains arrive at Suzhou East Railway Station or Suzhou Railway Station. Shared bicycles and electric scooters are convenient for getting around the city. For Huangcangyu, Dangshan, and other counties, driving or hiring a car makes itinerary planning easier.
- Accommodation: The areas around Wanda Plaza and Guogou Plaza have well-developed commercial facilities and concentrated dining options, making them suitable places to stay. If you need to transfer near the East Station, consider the Hui-style guesthouses around Qufang Street.
Travel Tips
- Meaning of “Xuxian”: Locals pronounce “Su” in “Suzhou” as “Xu,” which led to the nickname “Xuxian” (“dotted line”). There is no dedicated attraction called the “Xuxian landmark” in the city, so there is no need to plan a route to find one.
- Choosing Commercial Areas: Some commercial areas, including Nanxiang Yunji, currently have few visitors and many shops have not yet opened. For shopping and dining, prioritize the city’s established shopping districts and food streets.
- Footwear and Clothing: Wooden walkways by the lake and stone paths at historic temples can be slippery after rain, so wear comfortable, slip-resistant sports shoes. Temperatures vary considerably between morning and evening in the mountains, so bring a light jacket.
- Best Visiting Times: Huangcangyu and the Dangshan pear orchards can be crowded during holidays. When possible, visit on a weekday morning.
