Suizhou combines chime-bell culture, ancient ginkgo groves and mountain scenery, making it well suited to a short, leisurely trip.
- Suizhou Museum: A national first-class museum with a rich collection of Shang and Zhou dynasty bronzes, earning it the nickname “Kingdom of Bronzes.” See replicas of the chime bells of Marquis Yi of Zeng and enjoy chime-bell music and dance performances. Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.
- Hometown of Yandi Shennong: This is said to be the birthplace of Yandi, a founding ancestor of Chinese civilization. Attractions include Shennong Hall and Lieshan Lake. A roots-seeking festival is held each year in the fourth lunar month, offering a chance to learn about ancestral traditions, pay respects to ancestors and pray for blessings.
- Dahong Mountain Scenic Area: Known as the “Emerald of Central Hubei.” Climb to the Golden Summit on Baozhu Peak for sunrise and a sea of clouds, and visit Bailong Pool and Liangwang Cave. The area is worth visiting year-round, with cool retreats in summer and colorful mountain forests in autumn.
- Thousand-Year Ginkgo Valley: One of the world’s four major contiguous ancient ginkgo groves, the valley preserves 308 thousand-year-old ginkgo trees. Their leaves turn golden yellow in mid-to-late November, filling the valley with rich autumn color.
- Journey to the West Park: A park themed around the novel *Journey to the West*, with mythical settings such as Flower-Fruit Mountain, live performances and hot spring activities. It is suitable for family visits.

Transport and Accommodation
- Transport: Suizhou is about 2–2.5 hours from Wuhan by car. A high-speed train from Hankou Station reaches Suizhou South Station in about 1 hour, with fares of CNY 50–70. Dahong Mountain and Thousand-Year Ginkgo Valley are far from the city center and are best reached by car.
- Accommodation: In the city, stay near Caodianzi Street in Zengdu District for convenient dining and transport. For Dahong Mountain, Zizai Valley Hotel inside the scenic area reduces travel along winding mountain roads. Several guesthouses are also available near Thousand-Year Ginkgo Valley.
Practical Travel Tips
- Ginkgo Viewing Season: Thousand-Year Ginkgo Valley is usually at its best in mid-to-late November. Arrive too early and the leaves may still be green; arrive too late and they may have fallen.
- Driving in Dahong Mountain: Private cars entering the scenic area must purchase a vehicle sightseeing ticket costing CNY 40 per vehicle. The mountain roads have many bends and a speed limit of 20 km/h. Drive carefully and aim to leave the mountains before dark.
- Museum Reservations: Suizhou Museum is closed on Mondays. Book through its official WeChat account before visiting. Chime-bell music and dance performance times depend on the day’s schedule.
- Mountain Temperatures: Dahong Mountain’s higher elevation means mornings and evenings are 5–8°C cooler than in the city. Bring a light jacket and wear athletic shoes with good grip for walking.
