Enshi travel guide

Enshi’s main attractions are its karst landscapes and Tujia culture, and it has a reputation as one of “China’s most beautiful places.” The sights, itinerary, food and accommodation tips below can help you plan a trip to western Hubei.

  • Enshi Grand Canyon: This UNESCO Global Geopark has two main sightseeing areas: Yunlong Ground Fissure and Qixingzhai. The 150-meter-high Incense Pillar and the walkway built along sheer cliffs are key highlights for viewing the canyon’s rock formations.
  • Pingshan Canyon: Known as “China’s Semporna” for its crystal-clear water. On a “floating boat” ride, the clear river creates the illusion that your boat is suspended in midair. Light-colored clothes are a good choice if you plan to take photos.
  • Tenglong Cave: Stretching 52.8 kilometers, it is described as Asia’s largest explored limestone cave. Temperatures inside stay at 14–18°C year-round, making it a cool retreat in summer. Visits can also include a laser show and Tujia song and dance performances.
  • Shiziguan: The main attraction is a floating bridge, and private cars with up to seven seats are allowed into the scenic area. Driving across the bridge offers close-up views of the green water and forested hills on both sides.
  • Enshi Tusi City: Often called the “Forbidden City” of Tujia culture, this complex showcases Tujia architecture through its stilt houses and palace buildings. Its layered layout also makes it a good setting for traditional-style photos.
  • Tujia Daughter Town: This town has free admission and is well suited to an evening visit. Along with the night views, you can watch folk performances such as Tujia wedding ceremonies and the Baishou dance, try local snacks, and take part in the bowl-smashing drinking tradition.

Suggested Classic 4-Day, 3-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Enshi and explore Tujia cultural sights

After arriving in the city in the afternoon and checking into your hotel, visit the architectural complex at Enshi Tusi City. In the early evening, take a taxi to Tujia Daughter Town for night views, snacks and the bowl-smashing drinking experience.

  • Day 2: Explore Enshi Grand Canyon

Leave the city in the morning for Enshi Grand Canyon, about a 1.5-hour drive away. Take the cable car up to Qixingzhai, see the Incense Pillar and cliffside walkway, then take the escalator down before heading to Yunlong Ground Fissure to see its waterfalls. Visitors with limited stamina can buy cable car and escalator tickets to reduce the walking.

  • Day 3: Tenglong Cave and Shiziguan

In the morning, head to Tenglong Cave, about an hour’s drive from the city, to explore the cave and catch a laser show according to the performance schedule. In the afternoon, continue to Shiziguan to drive across the floating bridge. Then head to Xuan’en county town for grilled fresh fish and enjoy the Gongshui River scenery in the evening.

  • Day 4: Visit Pingshan Canyon before heading home

If time allows, set out early for Pingshan Canyon, about a 2.5-hour drive each way from the city, for photos on a “floating boat” ride. After your visit, return to the city to buy gifts before heading home.

Local Food in Enshi

  • Xuan’en Grilled Fresh Fish: Freshly killed fish is slowly grilled over charcoal until the skin is crisp and fragrant and the flesh is tender and flavorful. It makes a good main meal during an evening visit to Xuan’en.
  • Zhangguan Hezha: This Enshi dish, recognized as intangible cultural heritage, uses a ground soybean mixture as its base, with eggs and minced meat added. It is kept heating as you eat. An order of one pot usually comes with a tableful of local dishes, with generous portions costing around RMB 40–50 per person.
  • Enshi Doupi: A common local breakfast made by grinding rice and mung beans into a batter and cooking it into thin sheets. Soft with a slight chew, it can be served in soup or stir-fried, with each version offering its own flavor.
  • Enshi Slow-Roasted Potatoes: For this street snack, small potatoes are slowly cooked over low heat until golden, then tossed with chili, chopped scallions, fish mint and other seasonings. They are crisp on the outside and soft inside.
  • Enshi Youxiang: A common fried snack at Tujia street stalls, made by wrapping a filling of lean pork and shredded potato in rice and soybean batter, then deep-frying it. The outside is golden and crisp, while the filling is savory and tender.
  • Fermented Cornmeal and Chili Stir-Fried with Cured Pork: Cornmeal and chili powder are mixed and fermented, then stir-fried over high heat with smoked cured pork. The tangy, spicy mixture and smoky pork make this a familiar home-style dish in Enshi.

Where to Stay

  • City shopping districts (Wuling International / Railway Station): These areas offer convenient dining and transport, making them useful bases for your arrival day and the night before departure. You can also stay here throughout your trip to avoid changing hotels.
  • Near the Grand Canyon (Mufu Ancient Town): Close to the main scenic area, this is a convenient base for early starts and evening returns. Consider staying here if you want to explore the Grand Canyon in depth or see the morning mist.
  • Around Xuan’en / Hefeng: If your itinerary focuses on exploring Shiziguan or Pingshan Canyon in depth, staying nearby can reduce long daily round-trip drives.

Travel Tips

  • Transport: Enshi’s attractions are spread far apart, and connections by public transport can be inconvenient. After arriving, consider renting a car or hiring a car with a driver. Mountain roads have many bends, so keep your speed down and drive carefully.
  • Clothing and gear: Mountain weather changes quickly, with noticeable temperature differences between morning and evening. Pack a light jacket and rain gear. Visits often involve mountain paths and steps, so wear comfortable athletic shoes with good grip.
  • Ticket booking: “Floating boat” tickets at popular attractions such as Pingshan Canyon are in high demand, so book online at least five days ahead. Keep an eye on the weather: heavy rain can leave the river muddy and affect photos.
  • Managing your energy: Walking the full route through Enshi Grand Canyon usually takes 4–6 hours and can be tiring. Cable cars and escalators can ease the effort. Avoid scheduling the canyon for your arrival day so you have enough energy for the rest of your trip.
