Xiaogan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 28

Xiaogan's main attractions are its culture of filial piety, mountain and lake scenery, flower fields, and Chu-style food. About an hour's drive from Wuhan, it suits a relaxed weekend or short holiday.

  • Dong Yong Park: This is a birthplace of filial piety culture and a key setting for the legend of Dong Yong and the Seventh Fairy. The park features Han-dynasty-style buildings, and visitors can wear hanfu for photos. Admission is free.
  • Shuangfeng Mountain National Forest Park: Its main peak rises to 888 meters, making it the highest in Xiaogan, and forest covers more than 88% of the park. The elevated boardwalk offers views of seas of clouds. The park is also a good place to escape the summer heat and hike in the mountains.
  • Xiangyun Bay, Yunmeng: This traditional-style waterside street combines several regional styles of Ming- and Qing-dynasty architecture. The main street is free to enter. When the lights come on at dusk, red lanterns reflect in the water, making it a pleasant place for a stroll and evening views.
  • Jinhui Manor: The estate features flower displays throughout the year, with a sightseeing train that takes visitors through the flower fields. A petting area and amusement activities make it suitable for families with children.
  • Guanyin Lake Ecotourism Area: This expansive lake is known as the “Little Erhai of Northern Hubei.” Take a speedboat ride to enjoy the scenery, or spend some quiet time camping or fishing by the shore.
  • Tangchi Hot Spring Resort: Fed by natural underground mineral springs, the resort has 68 themed soaking pools. It is a relaxing place for a hot spring break in autumn or winter.

Classic 2-Day, 1-Night Leisurely Itinerary

  • Day 1 (City Culture and Historic Architecture After Dark): Visit Dong Yong Park in the morning to learn about filial piety culture and its legends amid the gardens. For lunch, try thick sweet rice wine soup and Yingcheng lard flatbread. Spend the afternoon at Xiaogan Museum learning about local history and culture. In the early evening, drive to Yunmeng County and explore Xiangyun Bay Cultural Tourism Area. After the lights come on at 18:00, photograph the Nine-Bend Lantern Bridge and enjoy the traditional waterside architecture illuminated at night.
  • Day 2 (Forest Hiking and Flower Fields): Start the morning at an easy pace, then head to Shuangfeng Mountain National Forest Park for a hike or Jinhui Manor to enjoy the flowers. Try farmhouse chicken soup and wild greens for lunch. In the afternoon, buy sesame candy and rice wine as gifts before heading home.

Local Flavors of Xiaogan

Xiaogan's local food goes beyond rice wine and sesame candy. The following snacks offer a taste of the Jianghan Plain.

  • Xiaogan Rice Wine

Soft, sweet rice with the fragrance of rice wine and osmanthus makes this a warming local dessert.

  • Yunmeng Fish Noodles

Made from minced fish and flour, these silver-thread-thin noodles are served in a light, savory broth.

  • Xiaogan Sesame Candy

Shaped like a jade comb, this thin, crisp candy is sweet and fragrant, and is one of Xiaogan's signature foods.

  • Beef Noodles

With three times the beef served in Wuhan, this dish features thick pieces of meat, chewy noodles, and a rich, savory broth.

  • Hot Dry Noodles

Thick, chewy noodles are tossed with rich sesame paste and crunchy diced radish for a spicy, numbing flavor.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Transport: Driving from Wuhan takes about 1.5 hours. You can also take a high-speed train to Xiaogan East or Yunmeng East station. Taxis are relatively inexpensive within the city. Outlying attractions such as Shuangfeng Mountain and Guanyin Lake are best reached by car or a hired car with a driver.
  • Accommodation: For the first night, stay near a commercial district in central Xiaogan, at Yuji Hotel or another nearby hotel, for convenient dining and transport. Visitors planning a break at Tangchi Hot Spring can also stay at a guesthouse within the resort.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Tickets: Xiangyun Bay's main street is usually free to enter on regular weekdays. Admission may be charged during holidays or major events such as molten-iron spark displays and fireworks shows. Check official announcements before setting out.
  • Opening Schedules: Xiangyun Bay and Xiaogan Museum are both closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.
  • Buying Local Foods: Buy rice wine and sesame candy from established local shops or branded stores such as Shenlin Shuanglu. Loose products sold at attraction entrances may cost more.
  • What to Bring: Wear athletic shoes with good grip when visiting Shuangfeng Mountain or Guanyin Lake. Bring insect repellent for the lakeshore and old streets, where mosquitoes and other insects are common. A light jacket is useful for the temperature changes between day and night.
