Shiyan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 27

Shiyan’s travel offerings combine natural scenery, cultural heritage, and industrial history: Wudang Mountain is known for its Taoist culture, Danjiangkou Reservoir offers expansive lake and mountain views, and the automotive industry reveals another side of the city. The following itinerary uses a three-day, two-night framework to organize the main sights, schedule, and travel information.

  • Wudang Mountain Scenic Area: A World Cultural Heritage Site and Taoist sacred land. Look out for the sea of clouds at the Golden Summit, as well as the red walls and historic architecture of Nanyan Palace, Zixiao Palace, and Taizipo. Taking the cable car can reduce the physical effort required.
  • Danjiangkou Dam: Located at the source of the central route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the dam offers views over the reservoir known as the “Asian Heavenly Lake.” Driving or cycling along the ring road around the reservoir provides different perspectives of the shoreline scenery.
  • Wulong River Scenic Area: Known as the “Little Jiuzhaigou of western Hubei,” it features deep valleys, waterfalls, and clear streams. It is suitable for a light hike, allowing you to take in the forest environment and seasonal scenery on foot.
  • Shangjin Ancient Town: This Ming- and Qing-era town is one of the better-preserved ancient towns in Hubei. Its bluestone streets and old wharf retain the atmosphere of earlier times. In the evening, you can watch a light show or wear Hanfu for photos in the old-town lanes.
  • Yeren Cave: Located in Fang County, it is known for its karst cave landscape. The cave’s varied stalactites are highlighted by lighting displays, and a visit can be combined with an exploration of the cave to learn about local geology.
  • Dongfeng Automobile Museum: Exhibits of vintage cars and converted factory spaces explain Shiyan’s industrial development as a “car city.” It is also suitable for industrial-themed photography or a family science visit.

Suggested 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Shiyan and explore the city
    • Morning: After arriving in Shiyan, check in at your hotel. Staying near Wuyan Pedestrian Street or Wanda Plaza makes it convenient to find meals and taxis.
    • Afternoon: Begin at the Shiyan Museum to learn about dinosaur remains, Wudang culture, and automotive industrial history. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Then stroll through People’s Park and climb Chongyang Tower for city views.
  • Evening: Head to Hong Kong Street or Shanghai Road Night Market for food and shopping. Try Yunyang Sanhe Soup, sour-soup noodles, and other street snacks while experiencing the city’s nighttime atmosphere.
  • Day 2: Explore Wudang Mountain’s historic buildings
    • Morning: Set out early for Wudang Mountain. Take the cable car up and visit the Golden Summit, where you can view the layered mountain landscape from above.
  • Afternoon: First visit Nanyan Palace, whose historic buildings cling to the cliffs, then explore the imperial Taoist temple Zixiao Palace, and finally head to Taizipo. If you plan to take Hanfu photos, the red walls here make a suitable background.
  • Evening: Return to Wudang Mountain Town for dinner and rest. You can try Wudang frozen tofu and Taoist vegetarian dishes. If you have the energy, you can also attend the immersive night tour A Dream of Wudang.
  • Day 3: Explore the Danjiang waters and visit the dam
    • Morning: Go to Danjiangkou Reservoir and first take a boat trip on Taiji Lake to enjoy the scenery of mountains and water together. Then climb onto Danjiangkou Dam to view the dam and the expansive reservoir area.
  • Afternoon: Choose to drive or cycle along the ring road around the reservoir, stopping at viewing platforms for photos. If time permits, visit nearby Baixi Island or the Light of Canglang Tower.
  • Evening: After finishing your sightseeing, head to the high-speed railway station or airport for your return journey.

Shiyan Local Food

  • Yunyang Sanhe Soup: Beef slices, sweet-potato noodles, and dumplings are served together in one bowl. The soup is flavorful and filling, making it a common and popular hot breakfast locally.
  • Yunyang Sour-Soup Noodles: Noodles and seasonal vegetables are served with fermented sour broth. The flavor is sour and spicy, with a refreshing fermented tang that suits summer.
  • Zhuxi Steamed Basin: Meat, eggs, mushrooms, and vegetables are layered in a basin and steamed. The finished dish has a rich flavor and often appears at family reunion banquets.
  • Danjiangkou Spotted River Fish: A local reservoir specialty, this fish has delicate flesh and little fishiness. Steaming and hot pot are both good ways to enjoy its fresh flavor.
  • Fang County Yellow Wine: Made from glutinous rice, it has a smooth texture and a gently sweet flavor. It is a representative drink of Fang County’s food culture and is best enjoyed in small amounts.

Accommodation and Transport

  • Accommodation:
    • City itinerary: Stay near Wuyan Pedestrian Street or Wanda Plaza for convenient transport and dining, with shopping nearby in the evening.
    • Wudang Mountain itinerary: If you plan to enter the mountain early the next day, stay the night before in Wudang Mountain Town or near Yuxu Palace Pedestrian Street, where restaurants and accommodation are concentrated.
  • Transport:
    • Getting there and back: High-speed trains arrive at Shiyan East Station or Wudangshan West Station. The original itinerary estimates about 1.5–2 hours from Xi’an and about 2 hours from Wuhan.
    • Getting around the city: Taxis are convenient. The city has no shared bicycles, and vehicles picking up passengers on the opposite side of a road may need to make a detour.
    • Between scenic areas: Wudang Mountain, Danjiangkou, and Wulong River are far from the city center. Renting a car or hiring a private vehicle makes it easier to set your own stopping times.

Travel Tips

  • Reservations and visitor limits: Reserve Wudang Mountain admission and a Golden Summit visiting time in advance through the “Wudang Mountain Smart Tourism” mini-program. Without a reservation, entry may be denied. The Golden Summit has visitor limits, so plan to go early.
  • Cable cars and sightseeing buses: Wudang Mountain covers a large area, and the cable car reduces the amount of walking. Check the final departure times for the cable car and sightseeing buses in advance, and descend on time to avoid being stranded.
  • Street-side sales pitches: Be cautious of fortune-telling and “disaster relief” sales pitches around the scenic areas. Do not readily trust “low-cost tours” or guide services offered by people soliciting customers.
  • Shoes and clothing: Wudang Mountain and Wulong River involve considerable walking on mountain paths and boardwalks, so wear comfortable, non-slip sports shoes. Mountain weather changes quickly and temperatures can vary widely, so carry a light jacket.
  • Photography and drone rules: Photography is prohibited inside Wudang Mountain’s halls, and drone flights are banned throughout the area. Follow the rules to avoid having equipment confiscated or receiving a fine.
