Xiangyang combines Three Kingdoms history, Han River scenery and local food, making it well suited to a 3-day, 2-night trip.
- Xiangyang Ancient City: The old city has a wide moat. You can climb the city wall at Linhan Gate free of charge. In the evening, enjoy the sunset and the breeze from the Han River, with stone-paved streets below and views of the river and old city in the distance.
- Tangcheng Film Studio: A filming location for *Legend of the Demon Cat*, this site recreates Chang’an at the height of the Tang dynasty with red walls, upturned eaves and interlocking wooden brackets. Arrive in the afternoon to explore the architecture, then stay for the nighttime light show and period-costume parade after the lights come on. You can also wear hanfu for photos.
- Gulongzhong: Zhuge Liang once lived here in seclusion and farmed the land. Both Liu Bei’s three visits to his thatched cottage and the Longzhong Plan are associated with this site. The grounds are wooded and peaceful. Visit Sangu Hall, Wuhou Shrine and Zhuge Liang’s Thatched Cottage in sequence to learn about the Three Kingdoms stories.
- Xiangyang Museum: A national first-class museum whose Tang-style architecture is itself worth seeing. Its extensive collections offer an introduction to Xiangyang’s history and Chu and Han culture. Admission is free, but you need to scan your ID card to enter. Closed on Mondays.
- Guanjia Lane: This leisure district features Ming- and Qing-style architecture and is free to enter, with gray brickwork, gray roof tiles and red lanterns lining the streets. You’ll find traditional crafts recognized as intangible cultural heritage, street performances and local snacks. It is especially pleasant for a stroll after the lights come on in the evening.
- Yuliangzhou: This large island in the Han River is nicknamed “Xiangyang’s Little Sanya.” Its beaches, riverside paths and greenway around the island make it a good place for cycling, enjoying the river breeze and watching the sunset.

Must-Try Food in Xiangyang
Beyond beef noodles, Xiangyang offers a range of local flavors.
- Xiangyang Beef Noodles: Often eaten for breakfast, these alkaline noodles come in a rich, spicy broth made with chili oil and beef fat. Locals usually pair them with Xiangyang yellow rice wine and garlic cloves. Try the long-established shops around Yiqiaotou or on Xingfu Road, avoiding those in tourist areas.
- Brown Sugar Pastries: Common on North Street and in Guanjia Lane, these pastries have a crisp exterior and a warm brown sugar filling. Best eaten hot.
- Xiangyang Beef Trio: Beef, tripe and tendon are simmered in a red broth made with beef fat until tender. The flavor resembles a small hot pot version of Xiangyang beef noodles with extra toppings.
- Yicheng Crayfish: Large crayfish prepared in Hubei’s spicy, numbing style, seasoned with minced garlic and spices. Good for a shared dinner with beer.
- Nanzhang Lard Flatbread: A common local specialty, this savory, crisp flatbread has a distinctive lard and scallion aroma.
- Libo Milk: A long-established local brand of pasteurized fresh milk from Xiangyang. Its rich, creamy flavor makes it a good drink after strongly flavored dishes.

Transport and Accommodation
- Transport: You can arrive by high-speed train at Xiangyang East Station or Xiangyang Station; Xiangyang Station is closer to the old city. Taxi starting fares are relatively low, and rides between most attractions cost around a dozen yuan. Shared electric bikes are convenient within the old city. Take a bus or taxi to Gulongzhong or Tangcheng.
- Accommodation: Xiangcheng District is a convenient first choice. The areas around the old city, North Street and Linhan Gate put sightseeing, dining and evening activities within easy reach. Budget guesthouses cost about 150–300 yuan per night. Another option is the area around Minfa Plaza on Changhong Road in Fancheng District, which has good shopping and transport links, along with lively nearby night markets.
Practical Tips
- Tangcheng at Night: The main highlights begin after the lights come on. Arrive before 16:00 to enjoy both daytime and nighttime views, and get to performances early to choose a viewing spot.
- Old City Wall: The wall is 7.3 kilometers long. There is no need to walk its full length before returning; you can turn back at Lady’s City or the Great North Gate. Access to the wall is free, so ignore ticket touts.
- Museum: Xiangyang Museum is closed on Mondays except on public holidays. Reservations for entry close at 16:00. Confirm opening hours in advance and bring your ID card.
- Food: Breakfast in Xiangyang tends to be spicy. If you cannot handle much heat, ask for mild or non-spicy food before ordering. Many beef noodle shops close in the afternoon, so visit in the morning.
- Clothing: Hanfu or modern Chinese-style clothing works well for visits to Tangcheng and the old city wall. Wear comfortable shoes, as Gulongzhong and the city wall involve plenty of walking.
