Transport and Accommodation Guide
- Transport:
- By air: After arriving at Changshui Airport, you can take the airport bus (25 yuan/person) or Metro Line 6 into the city.
- By high-speed rail: Kunming Railway Station is the preferred choice. It is located in the city center, and the metro can take you directly to the Green Lake and Old Street areas. If you arrive at Kunming South Railway Station, it is in Chenggong District and relatively far from the city center. You can transfer inside the station to a high-speed train to Kunming Railway Station, which takes about 18 minutes.
- Within the city: Metro Lines 1 and 2 operate through services and basically cover the core areas. For short trips, shared bicycles or e-bikes are convenient options.
- Accommodation:
- It is recommended to stay in Wuhua District or near Green Lake Park. This area is part of Kunming’s central urban core, with convenient access to city attractions, restaurants, and commercial areas, as well as many public transport options.
- If you care more about a quiet environment and lake views, you can choose a guesthouse near Dianchi Lake, but it will take longer to get to city attractions.
Practical Tips
- About gulls: Black-headed gulls usually arrive in Kunming from November to March of the following year. If you visit Haigeng Dam in summer or early autumn, you generally will not see gulls; the main attractions then are the lake views and sunset.
- Sun and rain protection: Kunming is at a relatively high elevation, and the UV rays are strong. Sunscreen is recommended even on cloudy days, along with sunglasses and a hat. July and August are the rainy season, with frequent showers, so carry rain gear and a light jacket when going out. The temperature difference between morning and evening is fairly large, and it can feel cool when it rains.
- Buying flowers and fruit: If buying flowers at Dounan Flower Market, it is recommended to go after 8:30 p.m., when prices are usually lower and the flowers are also relatively fresh. For fruit, consider Wuliduo Agricultural Expo Plaza or Donghua Farmers’ Market, where prices are usually more affordable than in scenic areas and popular markets.
- Mushroom safety: When eating wild mushroom hot pot or stir-fried mushrooms, be sure they are fully cooked. Do not add raw mushrooms midway, and do not try undercooked mushrooms to avoid poisoning.
- Watch the spending details: In scenic areas such as the Old Street, be aware of possible charges for things like taking photos with “bronze statue performers.” Before renting ethnic costumes for photos, ask clearly whether headwear and silver accessories are included, as well as the rental duration, to avoid extra charges later.
