Chuxiong has a fairly noticeable temperature difference between day and night, so it is a good idea to bring a light jacket.
Chuxiong has a comfortable climate and is relatively affordable. You can experience Yi culture here, as well as see geological landscapes and prehistoric remains. It is suitable for a short weekend trip, and it also works well as a stopover on the way from Kunming to Dali.
City Culture and Leisure
- Yi Ancient Town: This Yi-style town is free to enter. During the day, its waterside lanes are quiet; at night, when the red lanterns light up, it becomes more atmospheric. Around 7:30 p.m., you may come across a bonfire party and the Left Foot Dance, and visitors can join in with local people. There are also plenty of night market stalls and snack options nearby.
- Chuxiong Prefecture Museum: Free to visit, the museum’s architecture incorporates elements of traditional Yi earthen houses, making it highly distinctive. The exhibits are substantial, including Lufeng dinosaur fossils, Yuanmou Man tooth fossils, and the world’s earliest bronze drum. It is a good place to gain a systematic understanding of Yi culture and the history of central Yunnan. Note that it is closed on Mondays.
- Futa Park: This park is home to China’s first ancient pagoda themed around the culture of good fortune. The tower is covered with 9,999 different written forms of the Chinese character “福” meaning “good fortune.” From the top, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Chuxiong’s urban area. Admission is 2 yuan, and visiting in the late afternoon also gives you a chance to watch the sunset.
- Yihai Park: Located within the city, this park has a broad lake surface and a lakeside beach, making it a relatively peaceful leisure spot. It is good for watching the sunset in the evening. At night, local residents often dance the “Three Stomps” here, making it suitable for a walk, some fresh air, or a short stop.
Nearby Natural and Geological Wonders
- Yuanmou Earth Forest (Langbapu/Wumao): This landform was shaped by water erosion over 1.7 million years. Its sharp, upright earth pillars look from afar like an abandoned alien castle. At sunset, golden light falls across the earth forest, creating a striking visual effect. It was also a filming location for movies such as *The Promise*.
- Lufeng World Dinosaur Valley: The park contains the world’s largest indoor protected site of dinosaur fossils, with more than 60 complete dinosaur skeletons on display. It is well suited to family trips and prehistoric life enthusiasts. There is also a hot spring hotel nearby where you can rest and relax after visiting.
- Heijing Ancient Town: This ancient town was once a thousand-year-old salt capital, and original residents still live there today. It has not been heavily commercialized. You can visit the Wu Family Courtyard and ancient salt workshops to learn about the historical traces left by the ancient Salt and Horse Route.
- Zixi Mountain: This area has the forest environment of the central Yunnan plateau and fresh air. The mountain trails are suitable for hiking, with ancient trees, wooden bridges, and streams along the way. In autumn, you can enjoy maple forests, and occasionally you may even come across wild monkeys.

Where to Stay
- Guesthouses inside Yi Ancient Town: Staying inside the ancient town means your window may look out onto gray-tiled white walls and waterside lanes. It is very convenient for visiting the night market and watching the bonfire party. Consider guesthouses by the river or deeper in the lanes first, as they are relatively quiet. A budget of 100–200 yuan per person can still provide a good stay.
- City hotels: If you prefer a quieter environment at night, you can choose a city hotel, such as one near Futa Park or Yihai Park. Overall value for money is good, and taking a taxi to various attractions is also fairly convenient.

Practical Transport and Tips
- Transport: The high-speed train from Kunming to Chuxiong takes about 1–1.5 hours and goes directly there, making travel convenient. City attractions are relatively concentrated, so renting an electric scooter is convenient. If you are going to Yuanmou Earth Forest, Heijing Ancient Town, or Dinosaur Valley, driving yourself or chartering a car is more suitable.
- Sun protection and temperature difference: Chuxiong has strong ultraviolet rays, and the earth forest area has little shade. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are recommended. The day-night temperature difference is relatively large, especially when visiting the earth forest or hiking, so bring a windproof jacket.
- Wild mushroom safety: From July to September, if you try wild mushrooms, choose a proper restaurant. Do not pick and eat mushrooms in the mountains yourself, and do not eat mushrooms that are not fully cooked.
- Museum opening hours: Chuxiong Prefecture Museum is closed on Mondays and open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00. Avoid the closure day when planning your itinerary.
- Cost reference: Fruit in Chuxiong, such as blueberries, mangoes, and loquats, as well as dining prices, are usually lower than in Kunming and Dali. You can have a fairly hearty meal for around 30 yuan per person, and farmers’ markets are worth visiting if they are on your route.
Chuxiong’s weather in October is comfortable, with clear and pleasant autumn days, making it suitable for travel. If you plan to visit Yuanmou Earth Forest, wear non-slip shoes.
