Taizhou offers mountains, historic towns and coastal scenery. Shenxianju is known for its clusters of peaks and swirling mist, Linhai's old town preserves historic streets and everyday local life, and Shitang in Wenling is a good place to enjoy coastal sunsets. The area's wide variety of soft, chewy snacks also offers a way to explore local food along the journey.
- Shenxianju: This national 5A-rated scenic area features closely packed peaks and drifting mist. Ruyi Bridge and the Nantian Summit glass viewing platform are major viewpoints. Cable cars and elevators can help with the ascent and descent, saving some energy.
- Taizhou Prefecture City Wall: Known as the "Great Wall of Jiangnan," this wall dates back to the Eastern Jin dynasty. It follows the contours of the hills and waterways, with views over the old town from the top. Late afternoon is a good time to watch the sunset and photograph the town.
- Ziyang Ancient Street: Stretching 1,080 meters, this street retains the historic character of the Tang and Song dynasties, and long-term residents still live here. Century-old snack shops line the route, offering a chance to try local food and observe everyday life.
- Guoqing Temple: Founded during the Sui dynasty, this temple is free to enter. Yellow walls, an ancient pagoda and a Sui-era plum tree are its main sights. The peaceful grounds suit a leisurely visit and photography.
- Colorful Xiaoruo Village: The village's houses are painted in pastel shades, earning it the nickname China's "Cinque Terre." The seaside boardwalk and colorful buildings make good photo subjects, with sunset views in the evening.
- Tiantai Mountain Waterfall: Known as "China's tallest waterfall," it plunges from high above, showcasing the dramatic mountain scenery of eastern Zhejiang. You can combine a visit with nearby Qiongtai Fairy Valley.
Classic 3–5-Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive in Linhai and explore the old town: Arrive at Linhai Railway Station around noon. In the afternoon, visit East Lake Park, then climb onto the Taizhou Prefecture City Wall at either Lansheng Gate or Xingshan Gate. Stroll along Ziyang Ancient Street in the early evening and try seaweed pastries and danqing yangwei, fried egg-white puffs with red bean paste. After dark, enjoy the old town's lights.
- Day 2: Linhai → Shenxianju: Travel from Linhai to Xianju by taxi or high-speed train in the morning, then visit Shenxianju in the afternoon. Choose a route that enters and exits from the south, or enters from the south and exits from the north. Use cable cars and escalators to link Ruyi Bridge, Lotus Terrace and the Foying Lianyun viewpoint, enjoying the mountain scenery along the way.
- Day 3: Shenxianju → Tiantai Mountain: Head to Tiantai County in the morning to visit Guoqing Temple, a Sui-dynasty temple with free admission. In the afternoon, choose either Tiantai Mountain Waterfall or Shiliang Waterfall for waterfall scenery.
- Day 4: Tiantai → Shitang, Wenling: Travel to Shitang in Wenling. Explore Colorful Xiaoruo Village in the afternoon, then walk along the coastal greenway. In the early evening, head to Qilin Mountain or the Duijie Viewing Platform to watch the sunset over the sea.
- Day 5: A relaxed morning in Wenling, then head home: Watch the sunrise over the sea, or visit Changyu Dongtian to explore caverns left by a thousand years of quarrying. Enjoy a seafood lunch before heading home.
Taizhou's Soft, Chewy Snacks and Seafood
Taizhou's streets offer a wide range of local snacks, particularly rice- and flour-based foods with soft, chewy textures.
- Seaweed pastries: Try these while exploring Ziyang Street. They have a crisp, flaky crust and a filling with a rich seaweed aroma that combines sweet and savory flavors. They are best fresh from the oven.
- Danqing yangwei: Whipped egg whites are wrapped around red bean paste and deep-fried into round, golden puffs with a soft, sweet texture. This snack is recognized as intangible cultural heritage and is also included in *Chinese Recipes*.
- Ginger broth noodles: Ginger juice gives the broth a warming, spicy flavor, with rice noodles, fresh shrimp, eggs and other ingredients adding savory depth. Locals traditionally eat this dish to ward off cold and dampness.
- Qiangao: Warm japonica rice cake dough is flattened into a wrapper and filled with braised pork, shredded dried tofu, shredded potatoes and other ingredients. Soft and chewy, it is a common breakfast and a local favorite in Taizhou.
- Paoxia: Its name comes from the Taizhou dialect. Pork, fresh shrimp, cuttlefish, scallions and other ingredients are coated in batter and deep-fried. Crisp outside and tender inside, it has a richer aroma when fried in lard.
- Shibingtong: A thin, flexible wrapper holds more than a dozen fillings and is rolled into a cylinder. Each roll brings together a variety of ingredients and flavors from both land and sea.
Small seafood is another important part of Taizhou's food culture. At casual seafood restaurants in Jiaojiang and Wenling, around RMB 80 per person can buy a generous meal. For upscale local cuisine, consider Xin Rong Ji, whose flagship restaurant is in Linhai.
Transport and Accommodation Tips
- Transport: Attractions are spread across Linhai, Xianju, Tiantai, Wenling and other areas, so driving gives you flexibility when planning your route. If traveling by high-speed rail, choose Linhai, Xianju South or Taizhou station according to your destination, then take a taxi or tourist shuttle to the scenic area. A taxi from Linhai to Shenxianju takes about 1.5 hours; the corresponding high-speed rail leg takes about 20 minutes.
- Accommodation: Consider changing your base as you travel. Guesthouses on Ziyang Ancient Street in Linhai offer easy access to snacks and evening views. In Xianju, look for accommodation near Shenxianju. In Wenling, consider a guesthouse with sea views in Haigang Village or Shitang.
Practical Travel Tips
- Footwear: Visiting the Taizhou Prefecture City Wall and Shenxianju still involves walking and plenty of steps, even where cable cars or elevators cover part of the route. Wear comfortable flat shoes and avoid high heels.
- Wind and warmth: Temperatures can vary noticeably between day and night at Shenxianju's summit and along the coast. Pack a light jacket even for an autumn visit.
- Advance reservations: Before visiting popular sights such as Shenxianju and Guoqing Temple on weekends or public holidays, check admission and cable car ticket arrangements through official booking channels to avoid disrupting your visit.
- Seafood choices: Sediment gives the sea near Taizhou a yellowish color, and local seafood tends to feature smaller varieties. If you mainly want large seafood, the selection may be less varied than in Qingdao or Hainan. Taizhou's strengths are freshness and relatively affordable prices.
