Wenzhou

Wenzhou combines the cultural atmosphere of the old Ouyue city, the mountain scenery of Yandang Mountain, and the island landscapes of Dongtou, making it suitable for a 3–4 day trip.

• Jiangxin Islet: Listed as one of China’s four famous islets, it is home to the East and West Pagodas. Take a ferry to the island and enjoy the river breeze while experiencing this small islet’s thousand-year cultural heritage.

• Yandang Mountain: A national 5A-rated scenic area, best known for Lingfeng’s night views, the crossing performance at Lingyan, and Dalongqiu Waterfall. Set aside 1–2 days to explore it.

• Nanxi River: Famous for its mountain-and-water scenery and ancient villages. You can take a bamboo raft at Shiziyan, stroll along Lishui Ancient Street lined with red lanterns, and then see the village layout of Cangpo Ancient Village, designed around the Four Treasures of the Study. The overall pace is relaxed.

• Dongtou Island: Dongtou is made up of numerous islands. Qicai Dongtou Village is ideal for photographing its colorful buildings, while Wanghailou offers distant views of the archipelago. Driving or cycling around the islands is convenient.

• Baizhangji: The waterfall has a dramatic drop, with the first section falling 207 meters. The water flow and spray are powerful, so bring a rain poncho when visiting.

Classic 3–4 Day Itinerary

• Day 1 (City culture and local life): In the morning, take a ferry to Jiangxin Islet and visit the East and West Pagodas. In the afternoon, explore Wuma Street and Shamogou, sampling local snacks. At dusk, enjoy the night views at Wutian Old Street or Impression Nantang.

• Day 2 (Yandang’s peaks and scenery): Head to Yandang Mountain. In the morning, visit Lingfeng and Lingyan and watch the crossing performance. In the evening, see Lingfeng’s night views, when the rock formations take on different shapes under the lights.
• Day 3 (Nanxi River villages and bamboo rafting): Head to Nanxi River and take a bamboo raft at Shiziyan. In the afternoon, visit Lishui Ancient Street or Cangpo Ancient Village to learn about the area’s traditional villages and Song dynasty style.
• Day 4 (Island scenery or a high waterfall):
  • Plan A (Islands): Head to Dongtou Island, visit the colorful villages, watch the sunset by the sea, and enjoy seafood.
  • Plan B (High waterfall): Head to Baizhangji in Wencheng to see the spectacular high-drop waterfall and the vast spray it creates.

Wenzhou’s Must-Try Specialties

• Wenzhou Glutinous Rice: Glutinous rice topped with mushroom and minced-pork soup, then served with crumbled youtiao and chopped scallions. It is savory and hearty.

• Dengzhan Gao: The outer shell is fried until crisp, with common fillings including shredded radish, pork, and egg. It has a pronounced aroma when freshly cooked.

• Pork Offal Rice Noodles: Thick rice noodles served with pig’s blood and intestines, seasoned with doubanjiang and chili. The texture is smooth and the flavor rich.

• Jiang Crab Sheng: Wenzhou-style raw marinated seafood made with swimming crab. The crab meat is delicate and served with a sweet-and-sour sauce.

• Almond Tofu: A dessert with a light mint fragrance, usually served with fruit and milk. It is refreshing and especially suitable for summer.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

• Accommodation:
  • City center: Restaurants and leisure venues are concentrated around Wuma Street and Gongyuan Road, with convenient transport. You can stay here for 1–2 nights.

• Yandang Mountain: If you plan to visit Yandang Mountain the next day, stay in Xianglingtou Village, which is close to the scenic area and convenient for an early start.

• Dongtou Island: If you plan to see the sea and sunset, spend a night at a seaside guesthouse on Dongtou Island.

• Transport:
  • Getting there: Take a high-speed train to Wenzhou South Railway Station, or fly to Wenzhou Longwan International Airport.
  • Around the city: The city’s attractions are relatively close together, and taxis and shared bicycles are both convenient.
  • Nearby areas: Attractions in Yandang Mountain, Nanxi River, and Dongtou are spread out. Renting a car or hiring a private vehicle is recommended, as public transport usually takes much longer.

Practical Tips

• Jiang Crab Sheng: Raw marinated seafood carries a risk of foodborne illness. Pregnant people, children, and those with sensitive stomachs should be cautious and choose cooked food whenever possible.
• Yandang Mountain night views: Lingfeng’s night scenery relies on imagining shapes in the rock formations and lighting. You can join a guided tour or enter after dark.
• Baizhangji: The scenic area has heavy spray, so bring a rain poncho or waterproof jacket. Entering from the north gate means walking downhill all the way, which is relatively less tiring.
• Nanji Island/Dongtou: When traveling to the islands, book boat tickets three days in advance, as seats are limited during peak season. Prices on the islands are high, so bring a reasonable amount of snacks and dry food.
• Seafood stalls: Confirm prices and how items are measured before ordering, and ask whether charges are by weight or by piece.
