Wenshan travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 11

Wenshan has strong sunshine and a noticeable temperature difference between morning and evening, so bring sun protection and a light jacket.

Wenshan combines karst landscapes, Zhuang and Miao ethnic culture, and the local identity of being “China’s Home of Sanqi.” Compared with Dali and Lijiang, it feels quieter and more relaxed.

  • Puzhehei Scenic Area: This is a 5A-rated karst countryside scenic area, where 265 lakes and clusters of peaks set each other off. In summer, you can also enjoy vast lotus fields. A visit can include taking a willow-leaf boat across the lake, climbing Qinglong Mountain for a panoramic view of the area, and visiting Xianrendong Village.
  • Bamei Xanadu, Wenshan, Yunnan: To enter the village, you need to take a boat through a 1-kilometer-long cave waterway. Along the way, you can see Zhuang stilt houses and rice fields that are still cultivated today, giving the area a strong traditional farming character.
  • Wenshan Prefecture Museum, Yunnan: The museum is free to enter. Its collections include many bronze drums as well as Zhuang and Miao cultural relics. A Ming-dynasty chieftain’s gold belt is the museum’s highlight. It is a good place to learn about Wenshan’s history and ethnic cultures in a short amount of time.
  • Xihua Park: Located in the urban area, this free forest park is known for its thirty-six steep and unusual peaks. From Sanyuan Cave, you can look out over Wenshan City, and in spring you may also see cherry blossoms in bloom.
  • Qidu Ancient Town, Wenshan, Yunnan: The ancient town is themed around Zhuang and Miao culture, with bluestone streets connected by traditional-style buildings. After the lights come on in the evening, the streets are especially pleasant to explore. On weekends, there are also intangible-cultural-heritage molten iron flower performances.
  • Babao Scenic Area, Guangnan, Wenshan, Yunnan: This scenic area is known for rice terraces and Zhuang ethnic culture. Babao rice is a national geographical indication product. The fields and villages along the river form rich layers of scenery, making it a good place to photograph rural landscapes.

Recommended 3–5 Day Itinerary

  • Day 1 Arrive in Wenshan: Arrive in downtown Wenshan in the afternoon and check in. In the evening, visit Qidu Ancient Town for its night views. For dinner, have sour-soup pig’s trotter hot pot, and after the meal you can go to the night market to try hot-and-sour rice noodles.
  • Day 2 Puzhehei Landscapes: Take a bus from Wenshan to Qiubei County, a journey of about 1.5–2 hours, then transfer to another vehicle to reach Puzhehei Scenic Area. On the same day, you can take a willow-leaf boat through the lotus waterways, visit Xianrendong Village, climb Qinglong Mountain at dusk to watch the sunset, and stay overnight in a guesthouse inside the scenic area.
  • Day 3 Bamei Xanadu: Charter a car from Puzhehei to Bamei Village, a journey of about 1.5 hours. After arriving, take a boat through the cave to enter the village and experience a Zhuang-style dustpan banquet. In the afternoon, walk through the countryside and rice fields, then return to downtown Wenshan in the evening for the night.
  • Day 4 City Walk: In the morning, you can learn about local history at Wenshan Prefecture Museum, or go to Xihua Park and climb up for a city view. At noon, try sanqi steam-pot chicken. In the afternoon, visit Wenxin Vegetable Market to experience local daily life, and have barbecue for a late-night meal.
  • Day 5 Return or Extend the Trip: Before returning, you can visit Babao Scenic Area in Guangnan to enjoy countryside scenery, or choose Sanla Waterfall instead for a nature-focused stop, then end the trip.

Recommended Local Foods

  • Sanqi Steam-Pot Chicken, Wenshan, Yunnan: This is one of Wenshan’s representative local dishes. It is made by steaming local sanqi with free-range chicken. The broth has a light herbal aroma and a rich, savory taste.
  • Sour-Soup Pig’s Trotter Hot Pot: The broth is mainly made from sour soup prepared with fermented greens. It is served with thinly sliced pig’s trotter with skin and milky-flavored beef, dipped in hot chili water. The sour and spicy flavor is quite appetizing. Wenshan Zhaojia Kitchen is a popular local place to try it.
  • Qiubei Sour Beef, Wenshan: This dish has a distinct flavor created with hot chili and sour notes. The sour-soup pig brain comes in a generous portion, and eating it with chives helps cut through the richness. The main branch of Wenshan Niuniu Sour Beef has a good reputation.
  • Wenshan Fresh-Poached Rice Noodles: The fresh-poached rice noodles at Laoling Restaurant are the house specialty. Prices are based on the amount of meat, and you can choose kidney slices, lean pork, small intestine, and fried mushrooms, then add seven or eight kinds of seasonings. The salt-and-pepper flatbread can be dipped in the soup.
  • Wenshan Zhuang Floral Glutinous Rice: The glutinous rice is dyed red, yellow, black, purple, and other colors with natural plant juices. It has a soft, sticky texture and a light plant fragrance. It is a common food during local festivals and when hosting guests.
  • Wenshan Barbecue, Yunnan: Hei’er Barbecue and the long-established Mijia Barbecue are both good choices for an evening meal. Ingredients such as chicken wings, beef, and yellow throat are served with both dry and wet dipping sauces, giving the food an overall fragrant and spicy flavor.

Transport and Accommodation Tips

  • Long-distance transport: High-speed trains go directly to Puzhehei Station, about 1.5 hours from Kunming South Station. You can also travel to Wenshan Yanshan Station and then transfer. If flying, you can first arrive at Kunming Changshui Airport and then take a high-speed train.
  • Local transport: In downtown Wenshan, taxis and buses are convenient. To reach Puzhehei, take a bus from Chengnan Bus Station to Qiubei County, then transfer to another vehicle. For Bamei, chartering a car or driving yourself is more suitable.
  • Accommodation recommendations: In Puzhehei, you can choose a lakeside guesthouse in Xianrendong Village, where facilities are relatively complete but prices are slightly higher. You can also stay in Puzhehei Village, which is relatively more affordable. In downtown Wenshan, it is recommended to stay near Kaihua Middle Road or Qihua Square for easier access to night markets and restaurants.

Travel Tips

  • No main entrance ticket for Puzhehei: The scenic area itself does not charge a main entrance fee. Willow-leaf boats cost about 200 yuan, bamboo rafts about 125 yuan, and sightseeing buses about 60 yuan. These activities are charged separately.
  • Sunset on Qinglong Mountain: Leave enough time in your schedule for both climbing up and coming down. Descending after dark can be risky, so it is recommended to start climbing after 4 p.m., when the light is relatively softer.
  • Bamei requires a boat ride: Boats into the village operate from 8:30 to 17:00, and the ticket is 85 yuan. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking.
  • Sun and mosquito protection: Wenshan has strong ultraviolet rays, so bring high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and mosquito repellent. In summer, you are very likely to get splashed when taking a willow-leaf boat, so it is best to bring a change of clothes.
  • Watch the morning-evening temperature difference: Puzhehei and Bamei have large temperature differences between morning and evening. Even in summer, it is advisable to carry a light jacket.
  • Plan weekend buses in advance: If taking a bus to Puzhehei or Bamei on a weekend, book tickets in advance to avoid affecting the rest of your itinerary.
