Puer travel guide

Pu’er lies between tea mountains, rainforests, and coffee-growing areas. The city has a relaxed pace of life, making it well suited to a trip focused on natural scenery, tea culture, and local food.

  • Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Forest: This area preserves a landscape where thousand-year-old tea trees grow together with the forest. You can go to Wengji Ancient Village to enjoy the sunset, visit Nuogan Ancient Village to experience a more original village atmosphere, and, when the weather is suitable, watch a sunrise above a sea of clouds in the early morning.
  • Sun River Forest Park: Located near the Tropic of Cancer, the park has a forest coverage rate of over 94%. You can see animals such as red pandas and white rhinos, making it suitable for family trips and visitors who enjoy natural surroundings.
  • Pu’er Tea Horse Road Relics Park: The park is themed around the Tea Horse Road and caravan culture. You can walk along the ancient flagstone road, take the rainbow cableway for views over the tea mountains, watch the Dingbo Lake water dance show, and take part in tea-picking and tea-making experiences.
  • Simao Old Street and Daijia Lane: These neighborhoods preserve retro arcade buildings and flagstone roads, with cafés and cultural-creative shops scattered throughout. They are well suited to an afternoon walk, with time to enjoy the architecture and everyday street scenes.
  • Nakeli Tea Horse Station: This is a quiet Tea Horse Road village. Its flagstone paths and century-old covered bridge retain a strong sense of history. You can also try roasted tea brewed in an earthen pot, making it a good place to slow down and explore.

Must-Try Food List

Pu’er’s food commonly features tea, rice noodles, barbecue, and mushrooms. Overall, the flavors tend to be sour, spicy, and fresh.

  • Pu’er Sour Vinegar Rice Noodles: The sour vinegar seasoning is appetizing, and the rice noodles are usually cooked fresh to order. You can go to Yangji or Mixian Wangzi, and add Sichuan pepper oil and chili from the table according to your taste.
  • Rice Sheets in Bean Soup: This is a common local breakfast. The peanut soup or bean soup has a thick texture, coating the rice sheets with a savory flavor. Old roadside shops where local residents line up usually give a better sense of the local taste.
  • Pu’er Barbecue: Local barbecue often has a sweet and spicy flavor. You can try grilled black-bone chicken, small sweet skewers, and stinky tofu with boiled fish. The Wuyi Farmers’ Market night market and Laoma Jingshao Barbecue are both places to experience the local nighttime food scene.
  • Wild Mushroom Hot Pot: If you visit during the rainy season or early autumn, you can try wild mushroom hot pot. The mushroom broth is delicious, but be sure to choose a reputable restaurant and make sure the mushrooms are thoroughly cooked before eating.
  • Cold Mixed Snacks: Axian Sour Chicken Feet come in pineapple and hawthorn flavors, both sweet, sour, and refreshing. The pounded hawthorn flavor at Lao Baizu Liangfen stands out, and it pairs well with richer, stronger-tasting dishes.

3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

Pu’er’s attractions are fairly spread out, so it is best to plan your route by area and travel at a relatively relaxed pace.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Pu’er and Explore the Old Town
    • Afternoon: Arrive in Simao District and check in, then head to Simao Old Street and Daijia Lane. You can walk along the arcade-lined streets and take a short break at a street-side café, such as Jianyu Coffee.
  • Evening: Go to the Wuyi Farmers’ Market night market to try local snacks and fruit. You can also visit the Tea Horse Ancient Town to see the nighttime lights and bonfire party.
  • Day 2: Enter the Forest and Experience Nature
    • Morning: Get up early and head to Sun River Forest Park to observe red pandas and walk along the forest trails.
    • Afternoon: Return to the city to rest, or visit a nearby coffee estate, such as Xiao’aozi, to experience pour-over coffee and learn about the production process of Yunnan arabica coffee.
  • Evening: Try Sipu cuisine or roast chicken. You can consider Li Mama Kitchen or Shimeiniang Restaurant.
  • Day 3: Visit the Tea Horse Road and Learn About Local Culture
    • Morning: Go to Pu’er Tea Horse Road Relics Park. Take the rainbow cableway for views over vast tea fields, then walk along the Banjiupo Ancient Road to learn about historical remains connected with the horse caravans.
  • Afternoon: If you have enough time, visit Nakeli Tea Horse Station to experience village life along the Tea Horse Road, then begin your return journey.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Accommodation: It is best to prioritize Simao District (the urban area). Dining and leisure options are concentrated here, taxis are convenient, and it is also easier to transfer when going to different attractions. If you want to stay in the tea mountains, you can choose a guesthouse on Jingmai Mountain, but travel time to and from the city will be longer.
  • Transport: Pu’er’s attractions are spread out, and the straight-line distance on a map may differ greatly from the actual driving time. Renting a car after arrival will give you more flexibility. When going to Jingmai Mountain, you may want to consider a hybrid vehicle, as the operation of charging stations in the mountains may not be very stable.

Travel Notes

  • Sun and Mosquito Protection: Pu’er has strong UV rays, so use sun protection during outdoor activities. When visiting forests and tea mountains, it is recommended to wear long sleeves and long pants and bring mosquito repellent.
  • Road Conditions: Some sections of road on Jingmai Mountain are stone roads or steep slopes, so drive slowly and carefully. The roads in Wengwa Ancient Town are relatively rough and steep, so self-driving there is not recommended.
  • Buying Tea: If you want to buy Pu’er tea, it is best to choose a reputable tea shop or tea expo garden. Taste the tea before deciding whether to buy, and avoid making purchases based only on low-price roadside promotions.
  • Climate and Clothing: In October, Pu’er is cool in the mornings and evenings, while temperatures can be higher at midday when the sun is out. A thin long-sleeved T-shirt is suitable, and you should also bring a light jacket or shell jacket.
