Qiandongnan travel guide

Qiandongnan is mountainous and rainy, so bring rain gear and non-slip shoes.

Qiandongnan is known for Miao and Dong culture, terraced landscapes, and traditional villages. It is well suited to combining cultural experiences with mountain-and-river sightseeing. The following is a 5-day, 4-night sample route covering major destinations such as Kaili, Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, Zhenyuan Ancient Town, and Zhaoxing Dong Village.

Classic 5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kaili and experience local city life

After arriving at Kaili South Railway Station, head to the city center to check in. In the afternoon, you can visit the Xiuli Tao Intangible Cultural Heritage Market. It is livelier on Fridays, and you can get a close look at traditional crafts such as Miao embroidery and batik. In the evening, go to Kaili No. 1 Mall and Zhongbo Snack Street for dinner. At night, you can watch the Guizhou Village T show, held from Friday to Sunday, 19:00-21:30, and experience a fashion display with ethnic characteristics.

  • Day 2: Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village and its night views

Depart from Kaili for Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, about a 40-minute drive. It is recommended to enter through the North Gate to reduce the need to climb steps. During the day, you can stroll along the old streets and watch performances at the lusheng performance area. At dusk, head to the viewing platform to look down over the village lights from above.

  • Day 3: Zhenyuan Ancient Town and a slow walk along the Wuyang River

Head to Zhenyuan Ancient Town, about a 1.5-hour drive. The old town stretches along the Wuyang River and has an overall slow pace, with a relatively restrained commercial atmosphere. During the day, you can wander through the old alleys. In the evening, take a walk by the river, try sour soup fish, and enjoy the relaxed feeling of this waterside ancient town.

  • Day 4: Zhaoxing Dong Village and Tang’an Rice Terraces, learning about Dong culture

Travel to Zhaoxing Dong Village, visit the five main drum towers, and listen to Dong grand songs. In the afternoon, take the shuttle bus to Tang’an Rice Terraces. The views here are open and expansive, making it a good place to enjoy the sunset and rural scenery. Compared with the main village, it is quieter and closer to the original feel of the countryside.

  • Day 5: Lesser-known Miao village or return trip

If you still have time, you can visit Langde Shangzhai to experience the Twelve Courses of Welcoming Wine and learn about more traditional Miao life and customs. Alternatively, you can arrange your return journey directly.

Main Attractions

  • Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village: One of the world’s larger Miao settlement villages. At night, its layered lights create a striking visual effect. It is suitable for visitors who enjoy a lively atmosphere and photographing village scenery, though it is quite commercialized.
  • Zhenyuan Ancient Town: A famous cultural town with a history of over a thousand years. The Wuyang River runs through the town, where Hui-style architecture and mountain-water scenery set each other off. The environment is relatively quiet, making it suitable for a leisurely stay.
  • Zhaoxing Dong Village: A large Dong village marked by five drum towers, with a strong cultural atmosphere. It is usually visited together with Tang’an Rice Terraces.
  • Langde Shangzhai: An ancient village once passed by the Olympic torch. It has seen relatively little commercial development. Villagers perform lusheng dances, bronze drum dances, and other shows, offering a good way to experience traditional Miao culture.
  • Wudong Miao Village: A free Miao village visited by relatively few tourists. Surrounded by mountains, with a stream running through the village, it remains lightly developed and is suitable for those who prefer a quiet environment and hiking.
  • Jiabang Rice Terraces: One of China’s more representative terraced-field landscapes, with different scenery in each season. The morning mist and sunrise are especially suitable for self-driving travelers and photography enthusiasts.
  • Tang’an Rice Terraces: Located near Zhaoxing Dong Village, with broad views. At sunset, the rice fields seem to meet the distant mountains, making it a good place to enjoy evening countryside scenery.

Local Food Recommendations

  • Sour Soup Fish / Sour Soup Beef: A representative Qiandongnan flavor. Red sour soup is fermented from tomatoes and chilies, while white sour soup is fermented from rice water. It is sour, spicy, and appetizing, and the dipping sauce is key to the flavor.
  • Niu Bie Hotpot: A specialty dish of Qiandongnan, made by simmering the herbal juices from partially digested grass in a cow’s stomach. It tastes slightly bitter at first, with a sweet aftertaste. The flavor is quite distinctive and is best for those open to local tastes.
  • Siwawa: A common Guizhou snack made by wrapping various shredded vegetables in a thin flour wrapper, then adding sour-spicy dipping sauce. It tastes refreshing and has rich layers of flavor.
  • Fried Potatoes: A common street snack. Potatoes are fried until crisp outside and soft inside, then mixed with fish mint and chili powder for a bold spicy flavor.
  • Iced Fruit Slush: A smoothie-style drink made from fresh fruit. Mango, dragon fruit, and peanut are common flavors. It is suitable for hot weather or after eating spicy food.

Accommodation and Transport Tips

  • Where to stay:
    • Kaili city center: Accommodation offers good value, dining options are concentrated, and it is convenient for trips to nearby attractions. If you do not want to drag luggage uphill inside a Miao village, consider staying near No. 1 Mall or Dashi Zi.
    • Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village: If you want to enjoy the night view, stay near the viewing platform or by Wind-and-Rain Bridges No. 1-3. Try to avoid mountaintop guesthouses that are too high up, as carrying luggage up and down the steps can be inconvenient.
    • Zhenyuan Ancient Town: It is recommended to choose a guesthouse along the Wuyang River, where you can see the river from your window and easily enjoy the ancient town’s lights at night.
  • Transport:
    • Long-distance transport: Taking the high-speed train to Kaili South Railway Station is the first choice. You can also fly first to Guiyang Longdongbao Airport, then transfer to a high-speed train to Kaili, which takes about 40 minutes.
    • Local transport: Taxis are convenient in Kaili city. For surrounding villages, self-driving or hiring a car is more suitable, as many villages are in mountainous areas with winding mountain roads, and public transport connections are not very convenient.

Things to Note

  • Transport: After exiting Kaili South Railway Station, it is not recommended to take unlicensed cars that actively solicit passengers or choose overpriced one-day tours. When going to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, do not easily believe claims that cars can drive into the village; vehicles can only park outside the scenic area.
  • Accommodation: Inside Miao villages, there are many stone steps and steep slopes. If you have heavy luggage, try to enter through the North Gate or choose a guesthouse near a Wind-and-Rain Bridge. Wooden guesthouses inside the villages usually have average soundproofing, so light sleepers should confirm this in advance.
  • Dining: Choose long-table banquets on main scenic-area streets with caution. It is more recommended to look for older restaurants with many local customers in Kaili city or residential areas of ancient towns. Niu Bie hotpot has a special smell and texture, so do not try it casually if you are unsure whether you can accept it.
  • Shopping: Much of the “Miao silver” sold along the streets is silver-plated cupronickel. When buying silver jewelry, check for a pure-silver stamp and try to shop at regular stores in the city. When choosing travel-photo packages, ask in advance whether makeup, styling, and original photo files are included to avoid extra costs later.
  • Customs: If you encounter welcoming wine at a village entrance and do not drink alcohol, explain politely and decline. Before photographing ethnic minority elders or folk rituals, ask for permission first.
