Liupanshui is cool in summer, but bring a jacket for mornings and evenings in the mountains.

Liupanshui is known as “China’s Cool City,” with an average summer temperature of about 19°C, making it a good choice for a summer escape. It offers alpine meadows and sea-of-clouds scenery, as well as local flavors full of everyday atmosphere. Below is a sample 3-day, 2-night itinerary.

3-Day, 2-Night Highlights Itinerary

  • Day 1: Urban Culture and Local Life
    • Morning: After arriving in Liupanshui, visit the Third Front Construction Museum to learn about the city’s industrial history. Its retro-style scenes are also good for photos.
  • Afternoon: Take a walk in Minghu National Wetland Park. Along the way, you can pass the Rainbow Ribbon Bridge and enjoy wetland scenery and fresh air within the city.
  • Evening: Head to Shuicheng Ancient Town, try the local signature Shuicheng griddle, and experience the town’s lively nighttime atmosphere.
  • Day 2: Grasslands Above the Clouds
    • Full day: Visit Wumeng Grassland to see wind turbines, cattle and sheep, and a sea of clouds. It is recommended to enter the park at 8 a.m. In the afternoon, you can wait for sunset at Guanfotai; in suitable weather, there is a chance to see a Buddha’s light.
  • Evening: Return to downtown Liupanshui. For dinner, you can choose Qilin bean soup meatball hot pot.
  • Day 3: Forest Oxygen Bar and Long-Distance Cableway
    • Morning: Ride the Meihuashan Cableway, which runs 9.91 km in total. The route passes through karst mountains and offers wide-open views.
  • Afternoon: Visit Yeyuhai Resort, take the forest mini train, and learn about local Yi ethnic culture.
  • Evening: Return by high-speed rail. On the way, you can buy hot chili powder and Panxian ham as souvenirs.

Main Attractions

  • Wumeng Grassland: One of Liupanshui’s representative plateau grasslands, and also the highest plateau grassland in Southwest China. The average summer temperature is 11°C. A sea of clouds, wind turbines, cattle, and sheep share the same landscape, making it suitable for camping and stargazing.
  • Meihuashan Tourist Area: This area has the world’s longest mountain cableway following the same route. A one-way ride takes about 1 hour. Going up in the evening gives you views of the city sunset and nightscape, and it is best visited when the weather is clear.
  • Yeyuhai Resort: The area includes Haiping Yi Ethnic Town and Yushe Forest Park. You can ride the spiral mini train through the forest and also try on Yi ethnic clothing for photos.
  • Shuicheng Ancient Town + Third Front Construction Museum: Free for the whole day. The ancient town becomes more atmospheric after the lights come on at dusk, and the streets are lined with several long-running griddle restaurants, making it good for eating while you stroll.
  • Minghu National Wetland Park: A free wetland park in the city, with the Rainbow Ribbon Bridge and wetland boardwalks. There is often light mist in the early morning, making it good for a relaxing walk.

Local Food List

When traveling in Liupanshui, focus on a few kinds of meals with local flavor. The following shops and dishes are commonly found locally:

  • Qilin Bean Soup Meatball Hot Pot

The bean soup base is rich, and the meatballs soak up the broth. It has more layers of flavor when paired with vegetables and dipping sauce.

  • Sour Soup Fish Noodles

The sour soup is appetizing, and the fish is tender with few bones. It is often eaten as a local breakfast.

  • Dry Pot Beef

Freshly sliced beef has a springy, tender texture and a strong savory flavor, making it good with rice.

  • Siwawa

Thin wrappers are filled with various small side dishes, then topped with sour soup for a refreshing sour-spicy taste.

  • Spicy Chicken

The chicken is flavorful but not dry, with moderate heat. It is a common dish to eat with rice.

Transport and Accommodation Suggestions

  • Getting there: High-speed rail goes directly to Liupanshui Station (about 1 hour from Guiyang and about 2 hours from Kunming). For flights, you can choose Yuezhao Airport, but there are fewer flights. You can also fly to Guiyang first and then transfer to high-speed rail.
  • Local transport: Attractions are fairly spread out, so renting a car or hiring a private car is recommended (about 400 yuan/day). The starting fare for taxis in the city is 8 yuan, and buses can be taken by scanning with WeChat.
  • Accommodation recommendations: Travelers who value convenience can stay near People’s Square in Zhongshan District or near Shuicheng Ancient Town, where dining and transport are both convenient. The average price is 150–250 yuan. For a more resort-style trip, consider the tent camp at Wumeng Grassland, which is convenient for seeing the starry sky and sunrise (book in advance).

Practical Tips

  • Clothing: The average summer temperature is 19°C, but the temperature difference between morning and evening is clear on the grassland and mountaintops. Bring a hardshell jacket or light coat. The grassland is windy, so wind protection is also important.
  • Sun protection: At elevations above 2,000 m, UV rays are strong. Prepare SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
  • Altitude reaction: Wumeng Grassland is around 2,800 m above sea level, and mild dizziness is relatively common. Avoid strenuous exercise during the trip, and you can also bring a small amount of chocolate.
  • Tickets: A round-trip ticket for the Meihuashan Cableway is 128 yuan. Buying tickets online in advance can reduce queuing time. Admission to Wumeng Grassland is 30 yuan, and self-driving vehicles can enter the scenic area.
  • Food tips: When eating griddle dishes, you do not need to order too much meat; the vegetables and tofu are also distinctive. Inside scenic areas, choose bamboo-tube rice and so-called “wild mushroom hot pot” with caution.
