Tongren is mountainous, so bring rain gear and a jacket when hiking or traveling around. Tongren in Guizhou is rich in mountains and rivers. It has highland scenery represented by Mount Fanjing, quiet old villages, and local city flavors with a distinctive matcha touch. Below is a Tongren itinerary and practical information for first-time visitors.

  • Mount Fanjing

Known for its long geological history, with Mushroom Rock and Red Cloud Golden Summit as its signature sights.

  • Tongren Grand Canyon

The river is clear and emerald green, and the karst canyon is suitable for hiking.

  • Yunshe Village

Located at the foot of Mount Fanjing, where streams and an old village sit side by side, offering a glimpse of Tujia culture.

  • Yamugou

With clear water and lush vegetation, it is suitable for stream trekking, playing in the water, and getting close to the mountains and forest.

  • Zhongnanmen Ancient City

Old streets and lanes coexist with modern businesses, and the night lighting is especially distinctive.

Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tongren, visit the ancient city, and try local snacks
    • Morning/Afternoon: Arrive at Tongren Railway Station (be careful not to buy a ticket to Tongren South Railway Station). Take a taxi or bus to your hotel to store your luggage.
    • Evening: Head to Zhongnanmen Ancient City, stroll along the bluestone streets, and go to Dongshan Temple for a panoramic view of the old city.
    • Night: Try local snacks in the ancient city or at the Daxiao Shizi night market, have a matcha drink, and enjoy the night view of the ancient city.
  • Day 2: Visit Mount Fanjing and stay overnight in Yunshe Village
    • Morning: Travel from the city to Mount Fanjing (entering from the west and exiting from the east is recommended; the west gate has relatively fewer visitors, better scenery, and gentler hiking slopes).
    • Afternoon: Climb to Red Cloud Golden Summit and look out over the sea of clouds, then take the cable car down from the east gate.
    • Night: Take a taxi to Yunshe Village for your stay, enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the old village at night, and try farmhouse-style Tujia dishes.
  • Day 3: Morning views in Yunshe Village, then return as planned
    • Morning: Take a walk in Yunshe Village, enjoy the morning mist over Shenlong Pool, try traditional matcha whisking, or go to the small hill at the end of the village for an overlook of the whole village.
    • Afternoon: Depending on your return schedule, you can visit Tongren Grand Canyon for a relaxing stop, or go directly to Tongren Railway Station for your trip back.

Short 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary (Without Mount Fanjing)

  • Day 1: After arrival, visit Zhongnanmen Ancient City, have a meal there, and enjoy the night view in the evening.
  • Day 2: Visit Tongren Grand Canyon in the morning to enjoy the natural scenery, then buy matcha specialties in the city in the afternoon before returning.

Must-Try Food Recommendations

Tongren is rich in natural resources and is also known as the “World Capital of Matcha.” Local food is especially known for sour-spicy flavors and matcha-inspired items.

  • Rice Tofu

Smooth and slightly springy, with appetizing sour-spicy seasoning; a common street snack.

  • Rice Rolls

Thin rice wrappers with generous fillings, often eaten with fish mint and shredded kelp.

  • Matcha Ice Cream

Distinct matcha aroma, dense texture, and a mildly bitter taste that turns sweet aftertaste.

  • Guoba Rice Noodles

The rice sheets have a toasted aroma and crisp texture, absorbing the broth to create a local Tongren flavor.

  • Bean Rice Hot Pot

A sour-spicy broth with soft-cooked beans; you can drink the soup or eat it with wild vegetables.

Accommodation Guide

  • Near Zhongnanmen Ancient City / Dashi Zi Commercial Area: Close to attractions and food streets, with good night views and convenient taxi access to the railway station. Suitable for visitors who prefer lively surroundings and evening activities.
  • Inside Yunshe Village: Many stays are surrounded by mountain and water scenery. Suitable for visitors who want to experience an original village setting, see morning mist, and enjoy a slower pace, though it is far from the city center.
  • At the foot of Mount Fanjing (Jiangkou County): If you plan to enter the mountain early in the morning, consider staying in Jiangkou County or near the scenic area’s east gate to reduce travel time.

Transportation and Notes

  • Choosing the right high-speed rail station: When booking tickets, make sure to choose Tongren Railway Station. Tongren Railway Station is in the urban area, about a little over ten minutes by taxi from the ancient city. Tongren South Railway Station is in Yuping County, far from the city center, making onward transfers inconvenient.
  • Mount Fanjing tickets: Book in advance through the official WeChat account, as tickets can be hard to get in peak season. It is recommended to buy a “west in, east out” ticket: hike up from the west gate, where there are fewer visitors and better views, and take the cable car down from the east gate to save energy.
  • Weather and gear: Weather on the mountain changes quickly, with strong winds and lower temperatures. Bring a windproof jacket or shell. Choose non-slip athletic shoes, and prepare rain gear and sun protection.
  • Luggage storage: If you choose the west-in, east-out route, you can leave your luggage at the sightseeing shuttle area at the west gate, or store it in advance at your hotel in Yunshe Village, then go straight to the hotel after descending.
  • Mosquito and sun protection: The canyons and villages have dense vegetation, so bring mosquito repellent. UV rays are strong locally, so use proper sun protection when going out.
