Pengshui travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Sep 17

Pengshui is humid and hot in summer, while its mountain and river scenic areas are cooler in the mornings and evenings. Pengshui is a distinctive Miao county in southeastern Chongqing. Its Miao architecture, Wujiang River scenery, and local snacks are all worth including in your plans. From central Chongqing, the fastest high-speed train takes about 45 minutes, making it suitable for a weekend or short-holiday getaway to cool off and relax.

  • Chiyou Jiuli City: This is the largest traditional Miao architectural complex in the world. Its stilted buildings spread along the mountain slopes, creating an open and impressive overall view. After the lights come on at night, the scenery is striking and can be compared with the night views of Hongya Cave. It is also a good place to take souvenir photos in Miao clothing.
  • Ayi River: A national 5A-rated scenic area, known for canyon rafting and clear pools. Visitors can choose a more exciting rafting route, or take a bamboo raft for a slow tour through Qilitang Canyon. It is very suitable for playing in the water and escaping the summer heat.
  • Wujiang Gallery: The mountains and waters along both banks of the Wujiang River stretch continuously. Taking a sightseeing boat on the river, you can see green mountains reflected in the water and broad river views, giving an impression similar to the “Little Three Gorges.” The route from Wanzu Pier to Gongtan Ancient Town has a more concentrated stretch of scenery.
  • Mowei Mountain: With an average elevation of 1,500 meters and high forest coverage, this is a mountain destination for staying cool in summer. You can plan to see a sunrise over a sea of clouds, camp in the forest, or hike through the stone forest, enjoying a refreshing climate of about 21°C.

Classic 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive in Pengshui + Chiyou Jiuli City + Wujiang Night View
    • Morning: Take a high-speed train from Chongqing to Pengshui West Station, about 45–50 minutes. After arrival, take a taxi to your hotel and store your luggage first.
    • Afternoon: Head to Chiyou Jiuli City. It is recommended to enter the park around 4 p.m. First visit representative buildings such as Jiuli Palace and the Nine Gates to learn about Miao culture and architectural features.
    • Evening: Have dinner inside or near the scenic area, then enjoy the night lighting in Jiuli City. If there are performances that day, you can also watch the large immersive show *Shanhai Jiuli* and the bonfire party to experience Miao customs.
  • Day 2: Ayi River Rafting/Canyon Sightseeing + Return Trip
    • Morning: Get up early and head to the Ayi River Scenic Area, about 20–30 minutes by taxi. If you plan to go rafting, you need to complete ticket check and enter the park before 12:30 p.m. You can choose the lower-half rafting route, which takes about 2–3 hours. It is relatively exciting but still manageable in terms of physical effort.
    • Afternoon: If you do not go rafting, you can take a bamboo raft through Qilitang Canyon, or visit the Qinglong Cave karst cave. After sightseeing, return to Pengshui West Station and take the high-speed train back.

Authentic Pengshui Food

In addition to its mountain and river scenery, Pengshui also has plenty of local snacks and homestyle flavors. Prices are generally friendly, and there is a good range of choices.

  • Du Juanzi

Soft, glutinous, and springy in texture, with a rich spicy aroma after being mixed with hot pepper soup sauce.

  • Devil Chicken Feet

The chicken feet are stewed until soft and flavorful, with a clear spiciness and a strong lingering kick.

  • Heart and Lung Rice Noodles

The fried heart and lung have a crisp aroma, served with red-soup rice noodles for an appetizing sour-spicy taste.

  • Sanxiang

Steamed pork with sweet potato starch is coated in free-range chicken egg, making it fragrant, sticky, and hearty. It is commonly seen at banquets.

  • Yangyu Hua

Potatoes with a crisp, fragrant outside and a soft inside, seasoned in a fragrant-spicy style.

In addition to the dishes above, the alley beside the Civil Affairs Bureau is home to many popular snack shops. You can buy freshly grilled wheat cakes, buckwheat griddle cakes, and fried potatoes there, making it a good place to snack as you stroll.

Transport and Accommodation Suggestions

  • Intercity transport: It is recommended to take the high-speed train to Pengshui West Station. From Chongqing East Station, the fastest trip takes about 45 minutes. After arrival, a 15–20-minute taxi ride can take you to the county center or Jiuli City. If driving, you can take the Chongqing–Hunan Expressway, with a journey of about 2.5 hours.
  • Local transport: Taxis are relatively convenient within Pengshui County. From Jiuli City to the Wujiang Gallery pier, it takes about 15 minutes by taxi. For farther scenic areas such as Ayi River and Gongtan Ancient Town, it is recommended to arrange a chartered car in advance or take the official scenic area shuttle bus. Some remote spots are not very convenient for last-minute taxi rides.
  • Accommodation recommendations: Consider staying near Liangjiangcheng Shopping Center or Binjiang Road, where dining options are more concentrated and taxis to scenic areas are convenient. If you want to enjoy the Wujiang River night view, choose a riverside hotel.

Practical Tips

  • Ticket discounts: Local policies are sometimes introduced, such as free daytime admission to Chiyou Jiuli City with a high-speed train ticket showing arrival in Pengshui within the past 3 days, or free nighttime admission. Before traveling, it is recommended to check the latest information through the official WeChat account.
  • Rafting preparation: For rafting on the Ayi River, bring a full change of clothes, a waterproof phone pouch, and a water scoop. The lower-half rafting route is fairly exciting, and getting completely soaked is common.
  • Night view timing: Chiyou Jiuli City is more attractive at night. It is recommended to go after 6 p.m.; the view is better after the lights are on. During the day, some visitors may feel the buildings look rather new and do not have a strong sense of history.
  • Mosquito and sun protection: Ayi River and Mowei Mountain have dense vegetation, so bring mosquito repellent and sun protection products for summer trips.
