Qianjiang travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Sep 17

Qianjiang is located in a mountainous area, with a noticeable temperature difference between morning and evening, so it is best to bring a light jacket.

Qianjiang lies in southeastern Chongqing and combines ancient towns, karst caves, canyons, lakes, and Tujia folk-culture landscapes. The pace of travel here is relatively relaxed, and the main sights are moderately spaced, making it suitable for a two- or three-day trip to slowly enjoy the mountains, rivers, and small-city life.

  • Zhuoshui Ancient Town: A 5A-rated scenic area with free admission. The town is home to the 658-meter-long “world’s longest wind-and-rain covered bridge,” which spans the Apeng River. After dark, the lights and their reflections on the river are especially worth seeing. The ancient town still preserves bluestone streets and stilted buildings, and the commercial atmosphere is not too strong, making it a good place to slow down and wander.
  • Puhua Underground River: Not far from Zhuoshui Ancient Town, this area is known for its karst caves and underground river scenery. The main way to visit is by boat. Along the route, you pass the Three Natural Bridges and can see the “Eye of Heaven” skylight formation. The cave stays at about 22°C year-round, making it especially comfortable in summer.
  • City Grand Canyon (Balahu): This site has the distinctive layout of “the city above the canyon, and the canyon in the middle of the city.” Visitors can walk along the cliffside plank road and look down over the canyon landscape, as well as see the giant cliff-carved Guanyin. Overall, the visit is not very physically demanding.
  • Shengui Gorge: Located deep along the Apeng River, this is a relatively pristine canyon water landscape. A boat ride lets you admire the 27 bends and the narrow “One-Line Sky” gorge view. Peaks rise on both sides of the clear river, and the environment is fairly quiet.
  • Xiaonanhai: An ancient earthquake barrier lake formed by an earthquake in 1856, this is a high-mountain lake landscape. The water is clear, and visitors can climb Niubei Island or observe earthquake cliff remains. It is suitable for escaping the summer heat and for leisurely sightseeing.

Classic Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival and City Sightseeing
    • Afternoon: After arriving in Qianjiang, check in at a city hotel. Then go to City Grand Canyon (Balahu), walk along the cliffside plank road, and experience the canyon-in-the-city scenery up close. The walk takes about 2 hours.
    • Evening: In the city area, try local flavors such as Qianjiang chicken offal and mung bean noodles. Then head to the Sancha River area to see the night view and experience the everyday atmosphere of this small city.
  • Day 2: Ancient Town and Underground River
    • Morning: Go to Zhuoshui Ancient Town, stroll along the old bluestone streets, and visit historic buildings such as Baxian Hall and the Gong Family Baoting Hall to learn about the remaining traces of Ba and Chu culture.
    • Afternoon: Take a boat tour of Puhua Underground River and experience the route known as “three days and two nights,” with alternating light and dark sections. Enjoy natural scenery including caves, the underground river, and skylights.
    • Dusk: Return to the ancient town and wait for the wind-and-rain covered bridge to light up at around 19:30. You can enjoy the night scene by the river as the lights reflect on the water, then stay overnight at a guesthouse in the ancient town.
  • Day 3: Canyon Boat Ride or High-Mountain Lake
    • Option A (Nature and Mountains/Rivers): In the early morning, go to Shengui Gorge and take a boat tour on the Apeng River. Admire the 27 bends and the canyon cliffs. The full trip takes about 2 hours and is suitable for visitors who prefer canyon and water scenery.
    • Option B (Summer Retreat and Leisure): Go to Xiaonanhai, where you can choose to hike around the lake or take a boat ride to enjoy the peaceful scenery of the earthquake barrier lake. In the afternoon, head to the Tujia Thirteen Villages to experience original folk customs.

Must-Try Foods in Qianjiang

Qianjiang cuisine is known for fragrant spiciness, sour-spicy flavors, and rice- and noodle-based snacks. In addition to chicken offal, there are also many snacks commonly eaten by locals.

  • Qianjiang Chicken Offal: One of Qianjiang’s signature dishes. Fresh chicken offal is stir-fried with pickled chili and sour radish, giving it a bright sour-spicy flavor and a crisp texture. It goes well with rice.
  • Zhuoshui Mung Bean Noodles: A common local breakfast. Handmade, freshly griddled mung bean noodles are smooth and springy, and can be served with minced meat or pork intestines, then topped with small hot chilies and fish mint for a distinctive flavor.
  • Xinhua Bridge Glasses Potatoes: A potato-based snack. Raw-fried potatoes are served with fish mint and chili sauce. The outside is crisp and fragrant, the inside soft and glutinous, and the seasoning has rich layers.
  • Mashijiao Fried Cakes and Bawang Guokui: Common street snacks. The fried cakes are filled in the middle with chili and radish, while the guokui is baked in a traditional earthen oven, with a crisp outer layer and a clear meaty aroma.
  • Rice Tofu: A refreshing cold dish. The pale-yellow rice tofu is smooth and tender, often served with red chili oil, fermented black bean sauce, and crisp soybeans. It tastes cool, moist, and springy.

Transport and Accommodation Guide

  • Transport:
    • High-speed rail: From downtown Chongqing, take the high-speed train to Qianjiang Station. The fastest journey takes about 1 hour, making it suitable for tight schedules.
    • Self-driving: From downtown Chongqing, drive along the Baotou-Maoming Expressway. The journey takes about 3.5–4 hours, and road conditions are generally good. Qianjiang’s sights are relatively spread out, so driving or hiring a car makes connections easier.
    • Bus: Qianjiang South Bus Station has direct buses to Zhuoshui Ancient Town, about every 30 minutes. However, the last bus is relatively early, so confirm the return schedule in advance.
  • Accommodation:
    • City hotels: Suitable for the day of arrival or the night before departure. Transport is more convenient, dining options are concentrated, and overall value for money is good.
    • Guesthouses in Zhuoshui Ancient Town: You can choose a riverside-view guesthouse in the ancient town or a stilt-house inn, which makes it easier to enjoy views of the Apeng River and the wind-and-rain covered bridge at night, while also offering a stronger ancient-town atmosphere.

Practical Travel Tips

  • What to wear: Mountain areas have a large temperature difference between day and night. Although the caves have a stable temperature, the humidity is relatively high, so bring a light jacket. There are many steps and plank roads in the scenic areas, so wear non-slip, comfortable sports shoes.
  • Sun and mosquito protection: Outdoor areas such as canyons and lakesides have strong UV rays, so use sun protection. In summer, also prepare mosquito repellent.
  • Boat times: The last boat at Shengui Gorge is usually around 14:30. It is recommended to set out early to avoid affecting the day’s plans.
  • Night-view viewing: During peak season, the wind-and-rain covered bridge can be crowded at night. You can go earlier in the evening to the riverside walkway on the opposite bank or to the lantern passage inside the bridge to choose a good spot and wait for the lights to come on.
