Ganzi travel guide

Ganzi’s plateau has a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a warm jacket even in summer.

Ganzi in Sichuan brings together the signature scenery of western Sichuan’s Tibetan areas: snow-capped mountains, meadows, alpine lakes, and Tibetan villages woven together in a vast, unspoiled natural landscape. Below is a 5-day travel plan that balances classic routes with a few lesser-known destinations, suitable for first-time visitors to western Sichuan.

Classic 5-Day Loop Itinerary

This route gains altitude relatively gradually and covers some of Ganzi’s most representative landscapes, making it a good basic itinerary for a first trip to western Sichuan.

  • Day 1: Chengdu → Kangding → Honghaizi → Xinduqiao. Depart from Chengdu and take the Ya’an–Kangding Expressway to Kangding to start adapting to the plateau environment. In the afternoon, follow Provincial Highway S434 to Honghaizi, where you can photograph the blue lake with snow mountains in the same frame. Arrive in Xinduqiao in the evening. When you first reach the plateau, it is best to avoid washing your hair or taking a shower.
  • Day 2: Xinduqiao → Eighteen Bends of the Sky Road → Litang → Shangri-La Town. This day passes the Eighteen Bends of the Sky Road and reaches Litang, known as the “world’s highest city.” You can also visit Letong Ancient Town along the way. Spend the night in Shangri-La Town, which sits at a lower altitude and offers relatively more comfortable rest conditions.
  • Day 3: Long-route hike in Daocheng Yading. After entering the scenic area, hike in the direction of Luorong Pasture → Milk Lake → Five-Color Lake. Along the way, you can view snow mountains and alpine lakes up close. The full route is physically demanding, so slow your pace and decide how far to continue based on how you feel.
  • Day 4: Short route in Daocheng Yading → return to Xinduqiao. Choose the easier short route in the morning, visiting Chonggu Monastery and Pearl Lake, where you can see the reflection of the holy Mount Xiannairi. Return in the afternoon and stay overnight in Xinduqiao.
  • Day 5: Xinduqiao → Tagong Grassland → Moxi Park → Chengdu. First visit Tagong Grassland for distant views of Mount Yala, then continue to Moxi Park, known for its gray-black stone forest landforms. If time allows, stop at Gunong Village for coffee and wait for sunset.

Key Attractions

Attractions in Ganzi Prefecture are far apart, so it is best to choose based on your travel time, energy level, and interests.

  • Daocheng Yading: Often called “the last pure land on the blue planet,” this area is surrounded by three sacred mountains. Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake are its signature sights, making it suitable for travelers who enjoy hiking and high-altitude natural scenery.
  • Seda: Known as the “red Buddhist kingdom,” Seda is famous for the red houses of Larung Gar Buddhist Academy spreading across the mountainside, creating a powerful visual impact. Book timed-entry tickets in advance before visiting, and be sure to respect local religious customs.
  • Mount Genyen: More pristine overall than Daocheng Yading, this area combines snow mountains, meadows, and wild hot springs. It is better suited to travelers with plateau experience who enjoy in-depth trips and outdoor hiking.
  • Moxi Park: Its gray-black stone forest creates a distinctive landform that resembles an alien surface. At around 3,500 meters above sea level, it suits visitors interested in niche geological landscapes.
  • Jiaju Tibetan Village: Praised as one of China’s most beautiful villages, it features Tibetan homes with white walls and red roofs tucked among green trees. The pear blossoms in spring and colorful forests in autumn are especially beautiful, making it a good place to slow down and experience Jiarong culture.

Accommodation and Food Guide

In plateau areas, accommodation quality and meal arrangements can noticeably affect travel comfort, so it is wise to plan ahead.

  • Xinduqiao: Well located as a transit point, with a good number of hotels. Prioritize accommodation with floor heating and oxygen supply facilities to ensure a better first night’s rest after arriving on the plateau.
  • Kangding: At a relatively manageable altitude, Kangding is a good place to rest on the return journey, with convenient dining and lodging options. You can visit Guoda Farmers’ Market to buy yak meat and wild mushrooms.
  • Ganzi County: A suitable transit base for exploring hidden destinations in the north. Yichuanxi Hot Spring Hotel is one accommodation option to consider; its rooms have a sense of design, and you can also enjoy views of snow mountains.
  • Danba County: Convenient for visiting Jiaju Tibetan Village and Moxi Park. Erxi Banmo’s Home has good views, and its wood-fired meals are relatively reasonably priced.

For food, you can try local yak hot pot when passing through Kangding, where freshly sliced yak meat is tender and flavorful. In Ganzi County, Fukang Casserole House and Xiaojianjiao Sichuan Restaurant are options. In Dege County, Aima Hao Tibetan Restaurant offers Tibetan-style pizza and butter tea.

  • Yak Meat Soup Hot Pot: A common representative dish in western Sichuan, made with freshly sliced yak meat and wild mushrooms. The broth is hot and rich, well suited to the cold plateau climate.
  • Tibetan-Style Pizza: One of Dege’s local specialties, with a distinctive flavor. It feels even more local when paired with butter tea.
  • Kangding Roast Chicken: Crisp and fragrant on the outside, tender inside, and especially tasty with roasted potatoes. You can look for places to try it in Moxi or in the city area.

Travel and Altitude Sickness Tips

Plateau travel has special environmental conditions, so safety and your physical condition should come first.

  • Transport Options: Self-driving is not strongly recommended for first-time visitors. National Highway 318 has many bends, and landslides may occur during the rainy season, so hiring a car or joining a shared car is less stressful. If you do self-drive, an SUV is relatively safer. A sedan can handle regular routes, but you need to control your speed and drive cautiously.
  • Preventing Altitude Sickness: You may take rhodiola one week in advance, and prepare oxygen canisters and glucose. For the first two days after reaching the plateau, try not to wash your hair or take a shower, and move slowly. For mild altitude sickness, rest is the priority, and you should not rely too heavily on oxygen.
  • Clothing and Sun Protection: The temperature difference between day and night is large, so even in summer, bring a hardshell jacket. UV rays are strong on the plateau, so pack sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  • Cultural Respect: When entering temples, avoid wearing short tops, short skirts, or shorts, and do not photograph monks casually. When walking around stupas or prayer wheels, move clockwise.
