Xianyang travel guide

Compiled and written by Tempscape as a starting point for planning; check opening hours and prices against official sources. Editor: Tempscape travel desk · updated Oct 11

Xianyang is most comfortable for travel in spring and autumn. By the riverside in the evening, be prepared for wind. Xianyang is not far from Xi’an and can be reached by metro in about half an hour. Life here moves at a relatively relaxed pace, with Qin and Han historical remains alongside the atmosphere of Guanzhong streets and lanes. It is well suited to an easy short city trip.

  • Fenghuang Terrace

One of the four famous terraces of Guanzhong, with views over the old city and a legend about an ideal son-in-law riding a dragon.

  • Qingwei Tower

Known as the top famous tower in northwest China. From the tower, you can see the Wei River and the city skyline.

  • Gudu Covered Bridge

A two-level covered bridge in Qin-style architecture spanning the water. At night, its lights create an old-world scene.

  • Anguo Temple

The old Xianyang station-sign wall is in this area, and the temple’s grey brick and tile buildings have a strong Guanzhong character.

  • Xianyang Lake

Good for walking along the Wei River ecological corridor, watching the sunset in the evening, or going boating and cycling.

Xianyang Local Specialties

  • Roujiamo

The white flatbread is soft, the meat is tender and falling apart, and the sauce aroma is clear. Spicy and cumin-flavored versions are also available.

  • Huitong Noodles

Chewy noodles with a rich sauce and generous toppings, a common local noodle dish at night markets.

  • Guokui Yazi

Charcoal-baked flatbread stuffed with cured meat in gravy. The crust is fragrant and browned, the filling is savory, and the texture is crisp.

  • Tofu Pudding

Delicate tofu pudding served with chili oil, giving it a savory, mildly spicy flavor and a smooth texture.

  • Rice Noodles

The broth is spicy, fragrant, and rich, with sesame oil adding aroma. The green Sichuan pepper flavor and toppings are both quite varied.

Suggested Itinerary

  • One-day trip (city walking route): Take Xi’an Metro Line 1 to Baimahe Station and leave from Exit D ➠ Walk to Gudu Covered Bridge to enjoy the Wei River views ➠ Explore Xianyang Old Street and Zhongshan Street, and see the graffiti wall ➠ Visit Xianyang Museum, with a focus on the painted terracotta warriors ➠ Go to Fenghuang Terrace to see the historic buildings and red walls ➠ Head to Qingwei Tower in the evening for sunset ➠ At night, you can go to Huitong Night Market for Huitong noodles, or stroll and snack around Fuyuan Lane. The city attractions are close to one another, and most sections can be walked; shared bikes are also an option.
  • Two-day trip (city and nearby areas): Spend the first day in Xianyang’s old streets and museums. On the second day, drive or take a bus to Zhengguo Canal in Jingyang County to see the canyon and clear-water scenery. You can also visit Zhaoling Mausoleum in Liquan County, or Qianling Mausoleum in Qian County, to feel the historical weight of the Han and Tang imperial tombs.

Accommodation and Transport Guide

  • Transport: From Xi’an to Xianyang, the convenient option is to take Metro Line 1 directly to Baimahe Station, with a journey of about half an hour. If driving, navigate to Tongyi Square or the underground parking lot at Fuyuan Lane. City attractions are concentrated, so walking or riding a shared bike is suitable.
  • Accommodation: It is best to choose somewhere near Xianyang Old Street or Zhongshan Street, where you can walk easily to the main attractions and have many snack options nearby. If you care more about chain hotels and value for money, consider areas along Metro Line 1, such as near Zhonghua West Road Station or Baimahe Station.

Practical Tips

  • Reservations and closures: Xianyang Museum is free to enter, but you need to reserve in advance through its official WeChat account. It is closed every Monday, except on public holidays, so check opening information before setting out.
  • Construction notice: Anguo Temple is currently closed for construction due to recent old street infrastructure upgrades, so visitors cannot enter for now. You can still stop and take photos around the exterior red walls.
  • What to wear: The old street and Gudu Covered Bridge are good places for photos in modern Chinese-style outfits or Hanfu. If going to Xianyang Lake or Zhengguo Canal for waterfront activities, comfortable sports shoes are recommended; a light-colored dress also works well.
  • Weather and wind protection: The wind is fairly noticeable by the Wei River, the lake, and on the covered bridge. If visiting in the evening or at night, bring a light jacket for yourself and your family or travel companions.
