Yan’an has a large temperature difference between day and night, so bring a jacket for mornings and evenings. Yan’an combines red-history sites with the landscapes of the Loess Plateau. You can visit revolutionary sites and museums, as well as natural attractions such as the Yellow River and canyons. A 3-day, 2-night trip works well, and it is smoother to divide your itinerary between the urban area and more distant outskirts.
-
Hukou Waterfall
Here the Yellow River surges through a narrow channel, creating a magnificent display of power. In winter, you may also see icefall scenery.
-
Pagoda Hill
A landmark of Yan’an, where you can climb up for panoramic views of the city and feel the atmosphere of this red-history holy land.
-
Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall
Learn about the revolutionary history of the Yan’an period in a systematic way through artifacts, manuscripts, and guided explanations.
-
Yangjialing
One of the former sites of the CPC Central Committee, with well-preserved cave-dwelling architecture and a strong historical atmosphere.
-
Nanniwan
Once known as a muddy wasteland, it became the “Jiangnan of Northern Shaanxi.” You can see rice fields and the Party Emblem Square here.
Best 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Red-history sites in the city and a lively night market
- Morning: Visit the Yan’an Revolutionary Memorial Hall to get a focused overview of Yan’an’s revolutionary history. It is recommended to book in advance and bring your ID card.

- Evening: Climb Pagoda Hill for a view over Yan’an’s urban area. You can stay until after sunset and wait for the city lights to come on.
- Night: After coming down the hill, head to Erdao Street Night Market to try northern Shaanxi snacks such as yangyu caca, Zichang pancakes, and spicy lamb trotters.
- Day 2: The rushing Yellow River and Loess Plateau culture
- Full day: Get up early and head to Hukou Waterfall. Hiring a car or self-driving is recommended. See the spectacular force of the water up close, where “the thousand-mile Yellow River is gathered into one pot.”

Must-Try Northern Shaanxi Foods
Yan’an cuisine is centered on noodles, coarse grains, and lamb flavors. The following local snacks are worth trying:
-
Yangyu Caca
Shredded potatoes are coated with flour and steamed, often served with sour and spicy seasonings. It is a common home-style staple in northern Shaanxi.
-
Zichang Pancake
The pancake skin is thin and translucent. It can be wrapped around crispy pork or dried tofu and eaten with a vinegar-garlic dipping soup.
-
Gan Mianpi
Buckwheat starch sheets are chewy and smooth, and become even more fragrant when mixed with chili oil.
-
Yan’an Zhanzhan
Known for its oil-free broth base and dipping sauces, with fenbuliu and gan mianpi being especially popular.
-
Chuanyun Pickled Cabbage Noodles
The pickled cabbage tastes refreshing and appetizing, while the noodles are firm and chewy. This is a common local noodle dish.
Accommodation and Transport Tips
- Where to stay: If you want easy access to the night market and night views, stay in the urban area of Baota District, especially near Erdao Street Night Market. If you want to experience northern Shaanxi folk culture and cave-dwelling-style accommodation, consider a cave-dwelling guesthouse near the Jinyan’an Resort area. Booking in advance is recommended during holidays.
- Getting around the city: Urban attractions are relatively concentrated, and it is convenient to take taxis or buses. The average taxi fare for a single ride is about 10–20 yuan.
- Transport to outlying areas: Hukou Waterfall and Ganquan Grand Canyon are far from the city. If you are not self-driving, hiring a car or carpooling is recommended. Taking a long-distance bus is not recommended, as it may be difficult to get a taxi for the return trip.
Practical Tips
- Book in advance: Red-history sites and memorial halls are free to visit, but you need to make a real-name reservation in advance through the official WeChat account and carry your ID card with you. On Mondays, pay attention to possible closures of some museums and memorial halls.
- Weather and what to wear: Northern Shaanxi has a clear day-night temperature difference. If visiting in October, you may wear short sleeves during the day, but should still prepare a thick jacket for mornings and evenings. The ground in Ganquan Grand Canyon is damp and may be muddy, so non-slip sneakers are recommended. White shoes or high heels are not suitable.
- Check the weather for the grand canyon: Ganquan Grand Canyon is best visited on sunny days, as the light-and-shadow effect is weaker on cloudy days. The scenic area may close temporarily on rainy days, so be sure to check the weather forecast before setting out.
- Avoid peak times: There are more visitors during holidays. It is recommended to enter the memorial hall after it opens at 8:30 a.m., and visit Pagoda Hill in the evening to avoid the midday crowds and strong sun.
