Weinan has four distinct seasons, and if you climb Mount Hua, pay attention to the temperature difference at the summit. Weinan is often underestimated by travelers. It has Mount Hua, famous for its steep, dramatic terrain, as well as ancient villages, old towns, and Yellow River wetlands. Compared with the heavy crowds in Xi’an, Weinan has a more relaxed overall pace and is also fairly budget-friendly.
- Mount Hua Scenic Area: The Western Peak of China’s Five Great Mountains, known for its extraordinary and precipitous terrain. You can choose the “up from the west, down from the north” route: take the West Peak cable car up the mountain, visit areas such as the South Peak Plank Walk, East Peak sunrise viewpoint, and then descend by the North Peak cable car, covering the main highlights of all five peaks in one day.
- Hancheng Ancient City: This Ming- and Qing-era old city has a history of 600 years, and it does not feel overly commercial. Its bluestone lanes and tall city towers preserve the look of an old town, and it feels even more historic under the lights at night.
- Dangjia Village: An ancient village from the Ming and Qing dynasties, known as a “treasure of Eastern folk dwellings.” The village has courtyard homes from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with rich brick and wood carving details, and family-instruction plaques are also commonly seen.
- Sima Qian Temple: An important site commemorating Sima Qian, the revered historian. Backed by mountains and facing water, its old paths and ancient cypresses create a solemn atmosphere. After climbing higher, you can look out over the Yellow River, making it a good place to appreciate the cultural depth connected with the *Records of the Grand Historian*.
- Qiachuan Scenic Area: Said to be the birthplace of the line “Guan guan cry the ospreys” from the *Book of Songs*, the area contains vast reed marshes and Yellow River wetlands. You can take a boat to watch the sunset over the Yellow River, and may also see migratory birds.
- Shaohua Mountain National Forest Park: Compared with Mount Hua, Shaohua Mountain is less physically demanding and is suitable for family trips. It has a forest “oxygen bar,” a glass walkway, streams, and waterfalls. Spring and summer are good for cooling off, while autumn is a good time to see red leaves.
- Weinan Old Street: Located in the urban area, it is suitable for an evening walk. The district is built in a style inspired by the Ming and Qing dynasties, with small bridges and flowing water along both banks of the You River. After the lights come on at dusk, you can browse intangible cultural heritage shops and try Guanzhong-style snacks.
Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1: Mount Hua Challenge

- Evening: Stay either at the foot of Mount Hua or in Huayin city. Replenish your energy with Huashan big knife noodles and mashi vegetable dishes.
- Day 2: Culture and the Ancient City
- Morning: Visit Xiyue Temple, known as the “Little Forbidden City of Shaanxi,” to learn about the layout and grandeur of a royal sacrificial site.

1-Day Relaxed City Tour (Good for Tight Schedules or Families with Children)
- Morning: Visit Weinan Museum (free; bring your ID; closed on Mondays) to learn about Weinan’s history. Then go to the Catholic church in the High-tech Zone to admire its Gothic-style exterior.
- Noon: Have a bowl of Yingying shuipen lamb in the city, paired with a crispy crescent-shaped flatbread.
- Afternoon: Walk by the lake and enjoy the breeze at Nanhu Park. Around dusk, head to Weinan Old Street to browse intangible cultural heritage shops, eat shichen baozi and tofu puffs, and experience everyday life in Guanzhong.
Must-Try Local Foods
- Weinan Shichen Baozi: The bottom of the bun is pan-fried until golden and crisp, while the filling is savory and juicy. Paired with hot soy milk, it is a common local breakfast combination.
- Chengcheng Shuipen Lamb: The broth is clear, and the lamb is stewed until tender and flavorful. It is served with freshly baked crescent-shaped flatbread, which can be filled with meat or torn into the soup.
- Hancheng Lamb Hele Noodles: Buckwheat noodles served with a fresh, spicy lamb broth. The flavor combines a numbing aroma with the richness of lamb soup, making it a representative local specialty of Hancheng.
- Tongguan Roujiamo: The flatbread has distinct layers and a crisp, flaky texture, filled with braised pork belly with both lean and fatty meat. Richly savory, it is a common street food in Guanzhong.
- Tofu Puffs: A local Weinan snack with a fragrant, spicy flavor, suitable for either breakfast or a late-night bite.
Transport and Accommodation Tips
- Transport: Getting from Xi’an to Weinan is very convenient: about 16–30 minutes by high-speed train, or about 1 hour by car. Weinan’s attractions are fairly spread out. For example, Mount Hua is in Huayin, while Hancheng Ancient City is in Hancheng. It is recommended to travel by self-driving or by high-speed train plus local taxis.
- Mount Hua accommodation: You can stay near the visitor center for 150–300 yuan per night, which makes it easier to enter the mountain early the next morning.
- Hancheng accommodation: You can choose a guesthouse inside the ancient city for 120–250 yuan per night, which is more convenient for exploring the old town at night.
- City accommodation: Hotels in Weinan’s urban area are generally good value. For 100–200 yuan per night, you can usually find decent options, such as around the high-speed railway station or railway station.
Practical Reminders
- Mount Hua reservation: It is recommended to reserve tickets 1–3 days in advance through the “Huashan Tourism Service Platform” WeChat public account, choosing a timed entry slot. Use your ID card to enter. The Plank Walk and Sparrowhawk Flips Over require separate reservations, and spots are limited.
- Prices on the mountain: Bottled water at the summit of Mount Hua starts from 15 yuan, and instant noodles cost 30 yuan or more. It is recommended to bring two bottles of water, plus snacks such as chocolate and beef jerky.
- Temperature difference and clothing: The summit of Mount Hua is 8–10°C cooler than the foot of the mountain. Even in summer, bring a light hardshell jacket. Be sure to wear non-slip athletic shoes; leather shoes or canvas sneakers are not suitable.
- Museum closures: Weinan Museum and Hancheng Museum are both closed on Mondays except on public holidays. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. Check the schedule before setting out.
- Heights warning: The Plank Walk and Sparrowhawk Flips Over are quite thrilling. If you are afraid of heights or do not have enough stamina, it is not recommended to force yourself to try them, as this may affect your later descent.
