Tongchuan has a large temperature difference between morning and evening in autumn, so bring a jacket if you plan to go into the mountains.

About an hour’s drive from Xi’an, Tongchuan is a small Shaanxi city well suited to a weekend or short holiday stay. It has both Yaozhou celadon culture dating back over a thousand years and Danxia landforms with autumn foliage. There are relatively few tourists, and overall costs are fairly moderate.

Culture and History

• Yaowang Mountain: This is where Sun Simiao once lived in seclusion. The mountain is shaded by ancient cypresses and has a quiet setting, with Northern Wei stone carvings and a Yuan-dynasty stele forest to see. The hike is not very strenuous, making it suitable for family trips, blessing rituals, and photos with a traditional Chinese feel.

• Yaozhou Kiln Museum: An important place to learn about the history of Yaozhou porcelain, with a large collection of ceramics from the Tang and Song dynasties on display. Admission is free. The surrounding area is a ceramics town, where you can arrange hands-on experiences such as wheel throwing and pottery making.

• Chenlu Ancient Town: This ancient town is known for kiln fires that have continued for more than a thousand years. You can see walls built with ceramic jars and roads paved with porcelain shards. Its commercial atmosphere is relatively restrained. In the evening, you can climb to the viewing platform for a distant view of the mountain town and the sunset.

• Tongchuan Museum: The building’s exterior features a water-ripple design. Inside, the exhibitions cover local history, cultural development, and revolutionary resistance history. The giant four-season paper-cut display is especially visually striking.

Nature and Danxia Scenery

• Xuejiazhai: This site combines Danxia landforms with red revolutionary heritage, preserving four former Red Army strongholds. The hike is of moderate difficulty; if your stamina is limited, you can take the cable car. Reaching the final stronghold offers broad mountain views.

• Yuhua Palace: A forest-style summer retreat, Yuhua Palace is a good place to see ginkgo trees and red leaves after autumn begins. During your visit, you can try off-road motorcycling and boating, and also visit the Xuanzang Memorial Hall to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the mountains and forest.

• Xishan Scenic Area: This area is regarded as a real-life landscape that evokes the mood of *Travelers Among Mountains and Streams*. In autumn, there are harvest-drying displays and Chinese-style cultural gatherings, making it a good choice for visitors who like natural scenery and photography.

Distinctive Architecture and Leisure Districts

• Cotton Warehouse: Converted from 1960s cave dwellings built for wartime preparedness, this red-brick complex has a castle-like quality and is also known as “Shaanxi’s Hogwarts.” The overall atmosphere is rugged and full of a sense of age, making it suitable for retro industrial-style photos.

• Huayuehui: This district brings together leisure and entertainment, dining, and intangible cultural heritage performances. At night, you can watch free shows such as molten iron fireworks, fountains, and the Twelve Flower Deities parade. It is a good place for an evening walk.

The surrounding commercial areas are relatively well developed, and it is also convenient for Huayuehui and the museums. If you want to experience the atmosphere of the ancient town, choose a cave-dwelling guesthouse in Chenlu Ancient Town.
• Getting around: Tongchuan’s attractions are not close to one another. For example, Zhaojin is about 1.5 hours by car from the city center, so self-driving is more flexible. If traveling by high-speed rail, you can arrive at Tongchuan Station or Yaozhou Station, then take a taxi or transfer to a bus to reach the attractions.
• What to wear: In October, daytime temperatures in Tongchuan are around 20°C, but the temperature difference between morning and evening is noticeable. Mountain areas such as Yuhua Palace and Xuejiazhai can be windy, so bring a light jacket or shell jacket to avoid getting cold.
