Shannan travel guide

Shannan sits at a high elevation, with a clear temperature difference between day and night, so bring warm clothing. Shannan in Tibet is regarded as an important birthplace of Tibetan civilization. It is home to sacred lakes, snow mountains, and historic monasteries. Compared with Lhasa and Nyingchi, Shannan has fewer visitors, making it suitable for travelers who want a deeper look at plateau nature and culture. Below is a suggested 5-day, 4-night Shannan itinerary.

  • Yamdrok Lake, Shannan: Yamdrok Lake is one of Tibet’s three great sacred lakes. Its surface changes with the light, showing layers of peacock blue, emerald green, and other colors. You can go to the Rurila Viewing Platform in Shannan for a wide, panoramic view of the lake area, and no entrance ticket is required.
  • Puma Yumco, Shannan, Tibet: Puma Yumco sits at an elevation of 5,010 meters and is a classic plateau lake landscape. In winter, blue ice can be seen here. Tuwa Village by the lake in Shannan, Tibet, is one of the highest administrative villages in the world, with a quiet environment.
  • Kula Kangri, Shannan, Tibet: Kula Kangri is one of Tibet’s four great sacred mountains. Its main peak rises to 7,538 meters, with a powerful and imposing profile. Baimalin Co and Jiej久 Co in Shannan, Tibet, at the foot of the mountain are suitable for easy hiking, with views of both snow mountains and glacial lakes.
  • Yumbulagang, Shannan, Tibet: Yumbulagang is known as Tibet’s first palace and stands on the summit of Tashi Ciri Hill. From the higher ground, you can look down over the Yarlung Valley and learn about the origins of the Tubo civilization more than 2,000 years ago.
  • Samye Monastery, Shannan, Tibet: Samye Monastery was the first monastery in Tibet to include the Three Jewels of Buddhism: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Its main Utse Hall incorporates Tibetan, Han Chinese, and Indian architectural features, and the overall layout carries the imagery of a mandala.
  • Kaju Monastery, Shannan, Tibet: Kaju Monastery is set among misty mountains and often appears partly hidden in the clouds. There are fewer visitors here, and the surrounding ecology is well preserved, with chances to see rare wildlife such as the Himalayan monal.

Classic 5-Day, 4-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Lhasa → Yamdrok Lake → Puma Yumco → Lhozhag County

Depart from Lhasa. You can cross the Kambala Pass or go to the Rurila Viewing Platform for a full view of Yamdrok Lake. Continue on to Puma Yumco at an elevation of 5,000 meters, and experience the quiet of a high-altitude village in Tuwa Village. Arrive in Lhozhag County in the evening for your overnight stay. Keep warm at night and watch for signs of altitude sickness.

  • Day 2: Lhozhag County → Kula Kangri Hike (Baimalin Co/Jiej久 Co) → Lhozhag County

Head to the Kula Kangri area early in the morning. You can arrange an easy hike at Baimalin Co or Jiej久 Co. The meadows and lakeshores above 4,500 meters offer open views, allowing you to see the 7,538-meter main peak up close and photograph sunrise light on the snow mountain and its reflection in the lake. Return to Lhozhag County in the afternoon to rest.

  • Day 3: Lhozhag County → Kaju Monastery → Tsetang Town

Visit Kaju Monastery, surrounded by clouds and mist, to experience the quiet atmosphere of a mountain monastery. You may also observe wildlife activity in the surrounding area. Then drive back to Tsetang Town in Shannan City, enjoying views along the Yarlung Tsangpo River on the way.

  • Day 4: Tsetang Town → Yumbulagang → Tradruk Monastery → Tsetang Town

In the morning, climb up to Yumbulagang for distant views of the Yarlung Valley and broad farmland. In the afternoon, visit Tradruk Monastery to see the pearl thangka and the Buddha image said to have been embroidered by Princess Wencheng herself, and learn about the history and religious culture accumulated in this ancient monastery.

  • Day 5: Tsetang Town → Samye Monastery → Lhasa

Visit Samye Monastery to see halls that blend Tibetan, Han Chinese, and Indian styles, as well as the four-colored stupas. Then return to Lhasa along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, completing the Shannan itinerary.

Must-Try Foods in Shannan

  • Shannan Tibetan Noodles: Shannan Tibetan noodles are known for their rich broth and chewy noodles, and are a common local breakfast choice.
  • Shannan Butter Tea: Butter tea is salty, fragrant, and rich. It is good for replenishing energy on the plateau and can also help ease the feeling of dryness. It tastes even more local when eaten with tsampa.
  • Air-Dried Yak Beef from Shannan, Tibet: Air-dried yak beef has a firm texture, is chewy, and is easy to carry, making it suitable for replenishing energy while hiking or on a self-drive trip.
  • Handmade Yak Yogurt in Shannan: Handmade yak yogurt has a thick texture and often has a golden layer of cream on the surface. It is usually eaten with sugar or honey.
  • Highland Barley Cakes and Tsampa in Shannan, Tibet: Highland barley cakes and tsampa are traditional Tibetan staple foods, mainly made from roasted highland barley flour. They are filling and suitable for outdoor trips.

Travel Tips

  • Border Permit Application: To visit Lhozhag County and border areas such as Kula Kangri and Kaju Monastery, you need to apply for a border permit in advance. You can apply at the police station in your registered place of residence, or apply online for an electronic border pass through the “Tibet Shannan Immigration Bureau 12367” mini program. Fill in “Shannan Prefecture” as the destination.
  • Preventing Altitude Sickness: Many areas in Shannan are above 4,000–5,000 meters. Within the first 24 hours after arrival, it is recommended to avoid showering, washing your hair, and strenuous activity. Walk slowly and take your time when getting in and out of vehicles. You can carry an oxygen canister, glucose, and ibuprofen with you. Do not run or jump.
  • Warm Clothing and Sun Protection: The plateau has a large temperature difference between day and night. Even in summer, it is advisable to bring a hardshell jacket and a light down jacket. The local UV rays are strong, so prepare sunglasses, a sun hat, and SPF50+ sunscreen in advance.
  • Temple Etiquette: When entering a temple hall, remove your hat and sunglasses. Do not photograph Buddha statues from the front. Walk clockwise while visiting. Do not step on thresholds, and do not disturb worshippers.
  • Road Conditions and Transport: Most roads in Shannan are paved, but the final sections leading to Kula Kangri and Kaju Monastery are mostly unpaved mountain dirt roads with switchbacks. An SUV or off-road vehicle is recommended, driven by someone experienced with high-altitude mountain roads.

Accommodation and Best Season Suggestions

  • Accommodation Recommendations: Tsetang Town, as the urban area of Shannan, has hotels with oxygen supply and generally better facilities. Lhozhag County and Cuoyu Village mainly offer Tibetan-style guesthouses. Facilities are relatively simple, but you can see the snow mountains up close. Before booking, confirm whether heating and oxygen supply are available.
  • Best Season: May to June and September to October are good times to visit Shannan. The weather is relatively stable, the lake colors are clear, and hiking conditions are better. In winter (November to March of the following year), temperatures are very low and some roads may be closed, but there is a chance to see the blue ice of Puma Yumco and sunrise light on the snow mountains.
