Nagqu is high in elevation and has large temperature swings, so warm clothing is needed year-round.
With an average elevation of over 4,500 meters, Nagqu is one of the highest cities in China and an important gateway to the Qiangtang area of northern Tibet. It has little commercial atmosphere. Blue skies, open wilderness, sacred lakes, and snow-capped mountains make up the classic landscape of the northern Tibetan Plateau.
- Sapukonglagabo Mountain, Nagqu: Sapukonglagabo Mountain is in Biru County. Its main peak rises to 6,956 meters and is known for its nearly equilateral triangular, pyramid-like snow peak and milky-blue glacial lakes. The outer lake, Sam Co, is good for viewing mountain reflections, while the inner lake offers closer views of the glacier. It is one of the most distinctive landscape destinations in northern Tibet.
- Namtso Sacred Elephant Gate, Nagqu, Tibet: Namtso is one of Tibet’s three great sacred lakes. Its water is deep blue, and the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains can be seen reflected in the lake in the distance. Sacred Elephant Gate is famous for its natural stone-arch landform. The views are wide open, and at sunset the light and shadow on the lake and rock formations become especially layered.
- Silin Co, Nagqu, Tibet: Silin Co is the largest saltwater lake in Tibet, and the color of the lake changes in layers with the light. The Tibet Nagqu Black-necked Crane National Nature Reserve is located around the lake. The ecological environment remains relatively untouched, making it suitable for travelers interested in natural scenery and photography.
- Qiangtang Grassland, Nagqu, Tibet: The Qiangtang Grassland is a vast grassland in northern Tibet. Herds of cattle and sheep are common, and you may also encounter wild animals such as Tibetan foxes and Tibetan blue bears. Open grasslands and distant mountains together create a classic highland pastoral scene.
- Tangra Yumco, Nagqu, Tibet: Tangra Yumco is known as the “glass lake of the plateau.” Its water is clear and transparent, and in the early morning, thin mist often mixes with the first light of day. Nearby Wenbu South Village in Nagqu preserves a simple village atmosphere. You can also visit the mysterious Skull Wall to learn about the area’s unique cultural traditions.
- Zandan Monastery, Nagqu, Tibet: Zandan Monastery is in Sog County. Its exterior resembles the Potala Palace, so it is also called the “Little Potala Palace.” The monastery has a clear layout of red and white palace sections. From the mountaintop, you can overlook Sog County town, and there are relatively few visitors.
Recommended Classic 3-Day, 2-Night Itinerary
- Day 1 First Adjustment to the Plateau: After arriving in Nagqu city, slow down your pace, avoid running or jumping, and do not wash your hair or take a shower. In the afternoon, you can take a gentle walk on the Nagqu Grassland in Tibet and enjoy the vast grassland and prayer flags. In the evening, try yak meat hot pot to warm up. For accommodation, it is recommended to choose an oxygen-supplied hotel in the city.
- Day 2 Head for the Sacred Lake: Set off early in the morning for Namtso. At Tashi Peninsula, enjoy close-up views of the blue lake water and look out toward the snow-capped mountains. In the afternoon, go to Sacred Elephant Gate and view the surface of Namtso from a higher vantage point while waiting for the changing light and shadow at sunset.
- Day 3 A Hidden, Lesser-Known Retreat: Go to Tangra Yumco to watch the sunrise, then enter the original, undeveloped Wenbu South Village to experience a traditional Tibetan village and local culture. Return to Nagqu city in the afternoon.
Transportation and Accommodation Guide
- Getting There: You can take a train to Nagqu Railway Station, with direct trains from both Lhasa and Xining. You can also fly to Nagqu Daqian Airport. First-time visitors to Tibet are advised to acclimatize in Lhasa for 1–2 days before going to Nagqu to reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
- Getting Around: Taxis are fairly convenient in Nagqu city, but for attractions such as Sapukonglagabo Mountain and Silin Co, chartering a car or driving yourself is more recommended. Overall road conditions are acceptable, but the final 20 kilometers to the Sapukonglagabo scenic area are gravel and dirt roads, so an off-road vehicle is needed. Private cars must also transfer to the scenic area shuttle bus.
- Where to Stay: Standard hotels are available in Nagqu city and county seats such as Biru County and Sog County. Be sure to prioritize accommodation with diffuse oxygen supply or nasal oxygen supply. Near scenic areas such as Sapukonglagabo Base Camp, accommodation is mostly in herder-run guesthouses. Conditions are relatively basic, beds are usually charged individually, and it is recommended to bring your own dry food.
Preventing and Handling Altitude Sickness
Nagqu has an average elevation of about 4,500 meters, and the oxygen level is only about half that of lower-altitude inland areas. Altitude sickness is a common physical reaction, so do not force yourself to continue if you feel unwell.
- Gradual Acclimatization: It is recommended to first acclimatize in Lhasa at 3,650 meters for 1–2 days before entering Nagqu. The increase in sleeping altitude each day should ideally not exceed 500 meters.
- Essentials: Bring a fingertip pulse oximeter, and try to keep resting blood oxygen at 90% or above. Also prepare portable oxygen canisters, glucose, and ibuprofen for relieving headaches.
- What to Avoid: Avoid strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours after arriving on the plateau. Do not drink alcohol during the first 48 hours. Washing your hair or taking a shower is not recommended, and take care not to catch a cold.
- Emergency Response: If you develop severe symptoms of oxygen deprivation, such as persistent intense headache, vomiting, shortness of breath, or confusion, use oxygen immediately and descend to a lower-altitude area for medical treatment as soon as possible.
Notes and Travel Reminders
- Clothing and Gear: The temperature difference between day and night on the plateau is very large. No matter when you travel, bring a down jacket or hardshell jacket, as well as high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat.
- Wildlife: Wild animals such as Tibetan blue bears and Tibetan foxes are often active around the Sapukonglagabo scenic area and the Qiangtang Grassland. If you encounter wildlife, keep a safe distance, do not feed or approach them, and do not go out alone at night.
- Road Conditions and Signal: Some road sections have no mobile signal, such as the mountain access road to Sapukonglagabo and parts of National Highway 317. Download offline maps before departure and tell your family your itinerary in advance.
- Scenic Area Policies: Opening policies and road conditions for Sacred Elephant Gate and the inner lake at Sapukonglagabo may change depending on the season and weather, such as closures during rain or snow or road reconstruction. Check the latest scenic area announcements before traveling and follow the instructions of on-site staff.
- Food Suggestions: Digestion is slower in high-altitude areas, so meals should be light and easy to digest. You can increase carbohydrate intake appropriately and avoid overeating. There are no restaurants inside the scenic areas, so bring snacks, drinking water, and ready-to-eat dry food.
